@977eli wow, you take it so personal. plus, likewise as you troll with your defensive responses to others, as well. i love your double standard statement "if you dont have anything nice to say then FUCK OFF". so far, you seem like a hot headed hypocrite with a low confidence in your personal identity with to whom you relate your musical interests in. you need to learn how to take a punch and not cry so much
There's a critic in every crowd. If you don't like it, don't listen. Sell a lot of records yourself ruleoforder? Got any Grammys under your belt from your songwriting and musical talent? Didn't think so. Maybe you should focus that energy you've wasted on envy into something more positive, like practice.
It's funny to read some of the comments here. It's a shame that you guys feel the need to criticize such a great performance... by the way... when is the last time I heard any of you play?....uh?....NEVER. Run your mouths after you become world famous for your craft.
I love Eric's music but he's not as good live as in the studio. He plays to edge of his abilities. He's extremely creative...more so than most guitarists alive today and admits he cant play as fast. While this is not a problem, he pushes himself to the limit and makes mistakes. If he were to just slow down a bit he would be outstanding but he's been sucked into this speed thing. Leave speed to the Yngwies! Eric has something nobody else has!!!
I agree that this particular show is a bit sloppy, but in general EJ is NOT a sloppy live player. Watch him live in concert or on the DVD of the Austin City Limits - he's damn near perfect.
And honestly, those speedy pentatonic licks are a big part of what make EJ himself.
Guitarists wish they had "off-days" like this one.
@21qpalzm12 Old post I know, but there is a really simple reason why he's not as fast as some others. He's shredding in a much more difficult way then yngwie who anybody can do, which is basically 3 to 4 notes per string. Eric shreds on the penatonic scale using mostly two notes per spring. That's why his shredding sounds different...plus it's much more tireing on the fingers then cruising thru chromatic harmonic minor scales like Yngwie. After 11 years of me playing, Eric superior.
Is it just me, or does his tone/guitar sound very similar to a PRS, that round bubbly tone of PRS. His strat sounds very little like a classic strat, i love the tone and sound of it. It's also one of the most expenise strats on the market.
I love Eric, but why do a lot of his solos have such a similar sound, even the scales and tone are like exact repeats, he's really preaty creative otherwise.
I know a lot of guitarists play scales, but I think they switch them up more often than it seems to be done with Eric. Who knows, but thanks for the insight. I think Eric really is one of the most amazing guitarists in the world, just too many of those same scales to me it seems
I was one of the biggest EJ fans when he first came out, but over time I realized that he has become a caricature of himself. He doesn't improvise outside of the safest scale in the world--the pentatonic. Anyone can use that scale and sound pretty good because every note usually works over diatonic harmony. For whatever reason, he seemed in the Electromagnet days to be forward thinking but just got on a treadmill concept and has stayed right there harmonically. Still love his tone though!
THANK YOU...and bro, only a REAL musician can have the balls to say that and the knowledge and actually understand what it means...otherwise you got some 10 yrs old saying "HOW the F*** dare you disgrace my god like that, EJ is the messiah..." I'm like get a life, even Jimi Hendrix when on too much LSD or whatever, played the same old licks cuz he was out of it...some people are amazing in execution and tone, but not way too origianl and get scared, unfortunatel EJ tends to do that..big deal.
Yea, he uses pentatonic but he throws in passing tones that make it more interesting and he uses dorian and harmoic minor often. And that's only his lead style too. He has a very versatile rhythm style using jazzy chords and finger picking single notes from the chords. What scales does he need to use to prove he is good. Locrian, phrigian? His style just makes use of mostly the pentatonic. Just about every style uses this mainly except classical, and metal, while they break into other modes.
Hurts doesn't it guys? To never be famous like Eric... earn a Grammy... and to sure as hell never be able to play like Eric let alone pull a tone like he does... ROFL
@Chromatype Old comment I know, but I disagree. Also this guy is so good eh improves with chords. I mean the chords he uses are uncanny. He usually hybrid picks them as well. True he solo's mostly in the pentatonic, but it's the way he does it. The way he shreds is amazing because it's mostly two notes per spring which is incredible tiring on the finger. I could run chromatic scaled with 3 to 4 notes per string all day at Malmsteen like speeds. his two note per spring is awesome.
You can always recognize his style over other guitar players. He's probably comfortable playing that way and not some other way.
In any case, just to be able to play this way, most of us would take a loong journey and hard work. So, let him play any ways he wants, he'll always be good.

his solos are similar because he almost always plays them in the pentatonic scale
