N810 only offered wifi (i rarely used bluetooth or gps) and I got 4h of constant use (browsing/video/music).... if u r getting only 4-5h on N900, then I think this shit should go on eBay.
before i flash my phone, i get up to 3 days battery life with normal use. after i flash to pr1.3, i can only get 4-5hrs WITH NO USE at all. its amazingly annoying now, so im hoping you could figure what's causing this problem. i heard its some internal application bug.
@notatcomputer hmm could prob be that your gps is enabled. Take a look at your settings. I have pr 1.3 installed and don't have any battery issues. If its not your gps then look around your apps and other settings, there is bound to be something. If not then re-flash it again.
@360NextLevel yeah i disabled gps, op for 2.5g setting, reduce screen brightness. but still. and it gets unusually hot when i charge my phone. this doesnt happen before flash.
@notatcomputer hmm strange. I would re-flash it again, start by flashing the emmc first then do the handset and then just use it with default apps, don't restore any of your apps. Also remember to disable the gps etc again. Then see how it goes and let me know.
You still loose charge with the GPS even when no program is using it? I thought the GPS automaticly stayed turned off while there wasn't any program asking for the coordinates...
@TiagoTiagoT I keep it turned off completely even network gps as having these features switched on (by default) causes the battery to drain far quicker.
@TiagoTiagoT standard system files and any widgets or background apps that auto start or anything else you have opened or set up. But you will notice a much better improvement since you have turned them off.
@360NextLevel Doesn't sound like they designed it right; hardware that is turned off, programs that aren't running and files that don't need to stay loaded on RAM shouldn't affect battery consumption at all...
You shared what you switched off in your phone, that you messed around, and how your desktops looks like in the end - but there is still no answer everyone is waiting for: >> what is your Battery life improvement? <<
@kudlatygosc it lasts me over a day since i done that as with all that i just about or not even got a day's use out of it. I done this video a long while back, I may do a follow up with a more up-to-date report
@360NextLevel When I use mine N900 strictly as a Phone (no wifi, web browsing or music playing just sms and phone calls), all unneeded radio's off, Brightness on lvl2, GSM only, no sdcard, charged via PC->USB, "clean" PR 1.3 without modified kernel - I got max 5 days 18hrs. On the other hand I can kill battery within 6hrs if I use it like a laptop - so how you use it is a key to long battery life.
@360NextLevel after 3mths use - when using strictly as a phone, in GSM mode only, I bar of brightness, I have standby time up to 6 days. PR is 1.3, standard Kernel, no additional "speedup" mods installed.
Do you know If the battery is better them the iPhone 3G. Because I'm always checking facebook and on a few online games. The downside is I'm charging my phone sometimes halfway through a day which it think is really bad.
@SkendzZ i say this again and again, its all down to usage. Heavy users the batt can last upto or just over a day for the n900. But then again this could change/vary if you run things like n64 emulators or android OS etc.
@360NextLevel Nice accent and love the way you pronounced "subscribe". I got the N900 last weekend. I love it. I'm in the tweaking stage. Checking out tips online.

Hi mate, I've just finished watching a couple of your vids and just want to say keep it up!
I got my N900 in Feb but have only just started using it a little over a month ago now...I know its a powerful phone & there are lots that can be done on it but I've never been one to use a phone to its full capabilities, but with this phone I am looking to do so!
Please tell me, how do you know where to go looking for all these apps cos Ovi Store has limited apps for N900, which are usually rubbish!!!
@TheTaiLam Apps are free and they are available in the extras-devel repository. Google n900 repositories, there is a wikki page on how to do it or check the description in my other vids. It is very easy. Just remember all the apps you get there will be in testing stages, so expect bugs & things not to work. If something doesnt work good for ya, then just uninstall it. Most of the apps are fine tho.
@echoeyy as with every portable device, its all down to your usage. If you are a heavy user it will last you just about a day. For me it lasts over 2 days but that sometimes varies on my usage. There are battery packs available if you are worried about the battery life.
There are also other apps available that help save battery life such as the AutoDisconnect app which is very useful for disabling wifi/3g internet connections when not required.
@echoeyy The battery life is a killer. This morning it lasted four hours (compared to one week on my last phone). I always carry a second battery. I see there are extended batteries. I think I will go for that as well.
@wankerka we dont need anti virus because n900 running in linux flatform and it is the safest , if you hear before that mac apple cant attack by a virus then it looks the same, unless some geek create a virus for n900, lol
@1991JMP make sure you followed the tips in this video as by default the gps options are set on. I noticed the battery was drainging quick as well mainly because of this. So you may wanna check out the pointers in this vid and read up the comments here as plenty of helpful answers are available :)
remenber guys this is not a phone it is a mini table pc with phone fuctions and yes this a excellent device! Now in the other hand all htc phones are nice also iphone is nice as well the diferences is in the os. we have some with windows mobile, apple, android, symbian maemo this last 3 are linux base but if you going to buya phone or any device in the market I will not recomend to get a windows mobile neither windows mobile 7 SUCK BIG TIMEEEEEE.
can some one tell me pls the battery life of the nokia n900 ?? plssss i need i a new phone but i'm wondering between n900 and the nexus one. Can some one pls help me
@Domineering666 battery life last between 1-2 days depending on your usage. 1 day at least on full usage. Nexus one and n900 are both completely different OS so its down to your personal choice really.
For more info on battery consumption, check the comments here :)
Cool man! I have just picked up my N900 and have found that the battery seems to drain rather quickly even with little use. Thanks for your very helpful tips!
The Nokia n900 is bad ass. I have a 3gs an want to go to tmobile but can't jailbreak or unlock untill iPhone os 4. I'm wondering wether to buy n900 witch is da shit cuss u can do a bunch of stuff or the htc hd2 with snap dragon chip. I don't like how hd2 looks so simple but I wanna know wat will be best in your apinion. Sad to say that I would need to buy it from nokia do to the fact that I'm in da us for 500 bones. Ugh reply to my comment if u can help. Thanks
Fantastic! Now happily watching and implementing with my N900 in hand! Yes!
One question though, I don't have any sort of data plan with my wireless provider at the moment, so I only ever want the device to access the web through WiFi (to avoid crazy charges). Any suggestions on how I might "turn off" accessing the web over the cellular network globally so I don't do so accidentally? I've turned off network positing in GPS already. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I explore :) Thanks!
@LordRichardRahl in that case I would also change ur settings. If you have 3G on then go into settings then phone and change the setting to GSM mode only. Then select internet connections and ammend the settting for search interval and the connect automatically settings from there. That will solve the problem. Also running it on GSM mode will give you more battery life.
Trying to decide if I want to buy one....it's got all the features I want but I'm worried the battery life might be a deal breaker! I doubt I would keep the connectively on all the time (wifi/gps/etc), but I could see myself using the wifi for an hour or two today and would still like to get at least a days use out of it!
@LordRichardRahl Battery lasts me for over a day and I keep wifi or 3G on most of the time, along with widgets. I don't do much or any at all web browsing unless im out somewhere an bored. But If you are a heavy user then it will last you a day.
@nawaz2kx Right on, I was just a little worried about reports of < 8 hour life, which would be annoying. However, I've already ordered mine and it's on its way! =D
Not sure on that 1. In my opinion they are all pretty much the same, to get the most of out any battery is to make sure you drain it each time after a full charge rather than sticking it on charge when its just telling you battery low or whilst its sitting at 2 bars or something. Just let it go to empty then charge it up, will last longer that way.
That will happen with every email acc you setup, basically its sync'ing with it. So whatever is saved in your inbox on your hotmail/google/ or whichever you use it will download. Once it downloads it all, just simply delete the emails on your n900 by tapping delete button then hold Shift + A togther to select all, and thats it! :) This will only delete them off your n900 and not the actual server/email account, so its safe to do.
Forgive me not really computer minded what is a smtp or a pop3 server,i have my passkey and sky username has i use from my laptop, how would i set up my n900 so i can check my sky emails on the n900,cheers mate
You will have to get the details from sky and just add it in manually. you will need an smtp an pop3 server, enter those along with ur username and pswd and u should be good to go:)
Hi m8 nice vidoe ive just got a n900 on contract and what a cracking phone was gonna get the iphone but decided not too once i got an hold of the n900.I still dont know how to use the n900 but i,ll get use to it i guess.Have you got a screen protector on yours i was thinking of buying one
welcome to maemo! :) Yeah ive got a zaggs shield but I wouldn't recommend it. Although you should get a screen protector on it for now quickly to avoid any scratches. They are other makes out there but i duno if they are any good. Ive heard BodyGuardz is good.
If you apply google transcribe audio to this video its one of the funniest things ive seen in a long time, guess google dont understand the scottish accent ?
Hi mate, could you let me know if this handset has push email like blackberry's do, also if it does, is it as good...or do you have to keep refreshing your inbox 2 get new mail thru?
@rizla316 yeah it does. Ive personally not seen how the emails work on a blackberry but the n900 does a brilliant job. It just comes through instantly just the same way you would receive a text message notification and you can have multiple accounts added and is very easy to setup
when do you think it will come out and i think this update will be the biggest on a mobile device i think around 200+mb or even 300mb since they said alot is gonna be added and fixed
im not too sure myself as they said it would be out by end of Feb or 1st week of March. But now I am unsure as Meego has been announced for N900 at end of this month. We just have to wait and see what happens :D
Hi I use 3G network provider so can I still use my line when I disconnect the 3G and how can I do to type text/sms with one hand holding up the phone in a standing position like other normal phone,
lol you can txt/sms with one hand but its not easy and ull have to use the touch screen keyboard, again its not easy an i guess maybe over time you could manage it. Ive only managed to do it a cple times but only for short messages whilst i was sitting dwn. Standing too risky, u could drop it.
Thing you have to remember is that its not like a normal phone, its a tablet.
Most folk wont buy this simply coz they cnt do what you just asked an i liked doin that as well but i can live with it
battery is sometimes strange, it runs out just in the morning or it can take like 3h of browsing and stayed the same !!! I charge it like every 2 day.
Very nice vid m8, Im thinking about getting this phone, would you recommend it or would you prefer, let's say, the HTC HD2 if you could make the choice again?
Also do you have an estimate of how long the battery would last during normal usage? (With normal I mean, couple of short calls, a few text messages and a brief look at the web)
Im definately getting this "phone" 1-2 days of battery life is enough when using the device on a day to day basis. I really like the 32gig storage as well. Cheers m8
ok with your OVERALL use of the handset would you recommend to others? Bearing in mind i am a little bit of a geek and like the linux based software... Also is it possible to lock your messages or handset with password?
at the moment, you cannot lock the messages. You can however assign a security code to the fone which will lock the keys an before boot. And you can also assign a pincode but is not necessary if u have the security code enabled.
I presume some apps will come along for security and encryption etc, it is a new phone, new os.
Stay tuned for my next vid.......the n900 review, i will cover more info there for ya's :)
Thanks for the comments and if u wanna ask anything else then feel free.
. Just make sure when you suggest this device that you mention that the person will be getting a handheld linux computer, that has a full desktop browser as its most important feature. that is what maemo developers want people to know.
Let me politely correct you. Maemo IS LINUX!! Android is linux based. Maemo is lInux with a touch interface. just so you and any one else can realize that. its a good thing to know. because android is not open to the owner of the device. Linux is. so is Maemo. you can do whatever you want to it. its all yours.
Good tips and even better phone. Got mine couple days ago. Still adjusting from s60 5th edition. Already know that this phone built around Maemo will rock my world! Thanks for the tips once again.
On another note i must say the battery did very well last nite as i had several windows opened with an active internet connection, bluetooth was enabled, internet pages opened, and I let a whole movie play on it (sound was on very low so i cudnt hear it while i was in room), an the battery was still going! Bare in mind the batt was already at 30-40% and i did not re-charge it after doing this video.
Since my N91 N95 N95 9gb i just buy 2 more Batt with an external charger, they run for 20$ on Ebay and since this is no Iphone i just drop a fresh batt!!!
lol hmm but that means u still require an outlet to charge the spare batteries?
I would like to see someone make a case similar to the 1 they made iphone while back, its like the phone just fits into a connector inside the case an charges the fone. And for the case you just charge it up via usb before hand an ull knw its full when the all 4 lights are on at the back.
Suppose in the meantime i may have to buy a battery.
Ive got a car charger which i still need to test out as its for the DS :-P
I wud say its ok, its abt the same as the iphone. But its possible to drain it quicker than the iphone as it has multitasking an u cud have several windows open which will obviously use more juice. But if u just use it for a bit of surfing, ur emails, calls an txts then it shud last you a day.
Is this worth getting atm ?

nawaz2kx 1 year ago
@nawaz2kx Right on, I was just a little worried about reports of < 8 hour life, which would be annoying. However, I've already ordered mine and it's on its way! =D
LordRichardRahl 1 year ago
@LordRichardRahl it would last for less than 8 hours if you left the wi-fi connection on constantly which is stupid..

Does the nokia 900 have a longer battery life than the nokia 6300?
lillen300 1 year ago
Not sure on that 1. In my opinion they are all pretty much the same, to get the most of out any battery is to make sure you drain it each time after a full charge rather than sticking it on charge when its just telling you battery low or whilst its sitting at 2 bars or something. Just let it go to empty then charge it up, will last longer that way.

hi i want to set up my hotmail but its getting all the messages i jus want the first 20 or newest ones
Jamaica4Lyphe 1 year ago
That will happen with every email acc you setup, basically its sync'ing with it. So whatever is saved in your inbox on your hotmail/google/ or whichever you use it will download. Once it downloads it all, just simply delete the emails on your n900 by tapping delete button then hold Shift + A togther to select all, and thats it! :) This will only delete them off your n900 and not the actual server/email account, so its safe to do.

Forgive me not really computer minded what is a smtp or a pop3 server,i have my passkey and sky username has i use from my laptop, how would i set up my n900 so i can check my sky emails on the n900,cheers mate
deanpedley 1 year ago
Contact Sky or search on the web to get your email settings. Smtp and Pop3 are servers which are required for setup of email accounts.
Once you have these just open up the email app and enter them in manually when creating a new account.
360NextLevel 1 year ago
How do i link up my emails i,m with sky but sky isnt listed on the phone cheers
deanpedley 1 year ago
You will have to get the details from sky and just add it in manually. you will need an smtp an pop3 server, enter those along with ur username and pswd and u should be good to go:)

deanpedley 1 year ago
welcome to maemo! :) Yeah ive got a zaggs shield but I wouldn't recommend it. Although you should get a screen protector on it for now quickly to avoid any scratches. They are other makes out there but i duno if they are any good. Ive heard BodyGuardz is good.

Hi mate, could you let me know if this handset has push email like blackberry's do, also if it does, is it as good...or do you have to keep refreshing your inbox 2 get new mail thru?
rizla316 2 years ago
@rizla316 yeah it does. Ive personally not seen how the emails work on a blackberry but the n900 does a brilliant job. It just comes through instantly just the same way you would receive a text message notification and you can have multiple accounts added and is very easy to setup

kyuubiflame 2 years ago
yeah I have. Im looking forward to the next major PR update which should be out soon!
360NextLevel 2 years ago
when do you think it will come out and i think this update will be the biggest on a mobile device i think around 200+mb or even 300mb since they said alot is gonna be added and fixed
kyuubiflame 2 years ago
im not too sure myself as they said it would be out by end of Feb or 1st week of March. But now I am unsure as Meego has been announced for N900 at end of this month. We just have to wait and see what happens :D

Hi I use 3G network provider so can I still use my line when I disconnect the 3G and how can I do to type text/sms with one hand holding up the phone in a standing position like other normal phone,
Ify
ife2010 2 years ago
lol you can txt/sms with one hand but its not easy and ull have to use the touch screen keyboard, again its not easy an i guess maybe over time you could manage it.

The Batterys strange, under pressure, the battery can stand alot of power drain for a long period of time, i must say.
Catacylsm 2 years ago
battery is sometimes strange, it runs out just in the morning or it can take like 3h of browsing and stayed the same !!!

Thanks
greedkiller 2 years ago
Thanks im glad folk like it :)
As for the phone I would refer to it as a phone, its a mobile linux desktop computer / internet tablet which can also be used as a phone.
I love the phone, but I wouldn't recommend it for the average joe as its a very powerful device.
I was going to go for the HTC if this was gonna be shite, but since i like it ive stuck with it.
I use the device for the same things that you mentioned an the battery lasts around 1-2 days depending on your usage.
360NextLevel 2 years ago
Thanks for the reply,
Im definately getting this "phone" 1-2 days of battery life is enough when using the device on a day to day basis. I really like the 32gig storage as well. Cheers m8

Nice review man !
LazarRedDevil95 2 years ago
ok with your OVERALL use of the handset would you recommend to others? Bearing in mind i am a little bit of a geek and like the linux based software... Also is it possible to lock your messages or handset with password?
RudeboyCarl 2 years ago
If you love gadgets and ur technology then ull like and def want this handset!
I wudnt say its just for geeks just coz u can do so much on it but it is a powerful device.
Yeah u can lock the screen with a password/number code and it also comes up when u switch the phone on
360NextLevel 2 years ago
Thanks a lot mate! i might just go buy it tomorrow! LOOL but im assuming you can't actually lock the messages directly can you?
RudeboyCarl 2 years ago
at the moment, you cannot lock the messages.
Thanks for the comments and if u wanna ask anything else then feel free.

. Just make sure when you suggest this device that you mention that the person will be getting a handheld linux computer, that has a full desktop browser as its most important feature. that is what maemo developers want people to know.
ilovemaryam08 2 years ago
Let me politely correct you. Maemo IS LINUX!! Android is linux based. Maemo is lInux with a touch interface. just so you and any one else can realize that. its a good thing to know. because android is not open to the owner of the device. Linux is. so is Maemo. you can do whatever you want to it. its all yours.
ilovemaryam08 2 years ago
Good tips and even better phone. Got mine couple days ago. Still adjusting from s60 5th edition. Already know that this phone built around Maemo will rock my world! Thanks for the tips once again.

You can actually turn unnecessary desktops off completely. I assume it should help. I only use one desktop which is full of stuff :).
Jonkki 2 years ago
yep ur rite, u can do that as well. Ive left the 4 on , altho i only use 2.
Will take the other 2 off wen i can be bothered :P

so is the battery is a big problem for who just do few calls a day (like 3 - 4 calls duration of 5min) ??
huss211 2 years ago
On another note i must say the battery did very well last nite as i had several windows opened with an active internet connection, bluetooth was enabled, internet pages opened, and I let a whole movie play on it (sound was on very low so i cudnt hear it while i was in room), an the battery was still going! Bare in mind the batt was already at 30-40% and i did not re-charge it after doing this video.
360NextLevel 2 years ago
Since my N91 N95 N95 9gb i just buy 2 more Batt with an external charger, they run for 20$ on Ebay and since this is no Iphone i just drop a fresh batt!!!
:-D
xavierid 2 years ago
lol hmm but that means u still require an outlet to charge the spare batteries?
I would like to see someone make a case similar to the 1 they made iphone while back, its like the phone just fits into a connector inside the case an charges the fone. And for the case you just charge it up via usb before hand an ull knw its full when the all 4 lights are on at the back.
Suppose in the meantime i may have to buy a battery.
Ive got a car charger which i still need to test out as its for the DS :-P
360NextLevel 2 years ago
@360NextLevel But it works!!
:-P

How bad is the battery life in general?
logantn 2 years ago
I wud say its ok, its abt the same as the iphone. But its possible to drain it quicker than the iphone as it has multitasking an u cud have several windows open which will obviously use more juice. But if u just use it for a bit of surfing, ur emails, calls an txts then it shud last you a day.
