The Audio and some of the Video is from, "Joni Mitchell: Painting With Words and Music", which came out in 1998. For some reason, someone has superimposed footage from "Shadows & Light" over the newer footage in places but the Audio performance (and Video that begins at around 1:29) is definitely from, "Painting With Words..."
Oh, and as to dating this, 1998 is a much better guess than "Shadows And Light" due to the hairstyle. Check the cover of the Shadows And Light long playing record album (and there's a clip in this mix too from that) and dig the Farrah-like curls. The eighties were different...
As to information, the base track (the blue-lit circular stage shots), as well as the song version, are probably the one from an invitation-only concert called "Painting With Words And Music" from 1998. The band was Larry Klein, Brian Blade, Greg Leisz and Mark Isham. Eagle Rock Entertainment handles the DVD, I think. That was the one where she used the really reflective dark maple solid-body guitar (custom, probably). Maybe the best performance of this song I know of that's gotten to video.
Sorry, but the ¨Shadows & Light¨ tour was when the genius, Jaco Pastorius, was still alive and he played with Joni on the entire tour. I was lucky to have attended one of the concerts which stands out as the best live performances I have ever had the privilege of attending.
I can't decide if "Amelia" or "Shades of Scarlet conquering" is the finest song Joni ever wrote. I saw her live at the NEC in Birmingham, England in 1983, front row seats! I still treasure the event programme and ticket stub! She sounds better on vinyl. She is still my constant companion and inspiration after 40 years, bless her.
I just keep coming back to this clip. She is living every line of this amazing song as she sings it. You can see it in her eyes and facial expressions. Just incredible sincere talent making unique beautiful music. Joni is truly and undeniably a stellar talent. Not to mention unique. Exquisite.
Thanks for upping this great great song. Can anyone please tell me what the source of this clip is and is it commercially or otherwise freely available?
I agree that Mitchell is the best female lyracists of our times. But this is the thing about her: Few women have the spare time to chase "false alarms." We're too busy cleaning, feeding people and their animals, pleasing employers and screwing men who cheat on us. We ignore the false alarms as often as we ignore the real ones. Waiting for a plain lady to write great lyrics. Look at the men and say, what do you know about cleaning poop? I know a lot about it.
Thus Intensely Personal People Can Gyrate To Her Beat and Weep Over Her Incredible Ourpourings that are -- intensely persional and autobiographical...
Extremely well crafted poetry and imagry hellp her depict, thus they serve her greatly---it flows...
I really wish every young person who likes what they think is music nowadays would take the time to listen to this amazing lady--her lyrics can reveal new meanings even after listening to the same tune for years--and always accompanied by the best musicians in the business,,,this is from Heijira--1975 i think
Keep the faith. There are still young people out there making some truly beautiful music and people listening to it. It's just marketing that keeps some music popular. The great gulf between some really important music and the mainstream gets wider and wider. Go digging.

Here's the "Deal" with Joni Mitchell
-Her Music and Lyrics are Intensely Personal--

I couldn't agree more. Haunting, lyrical, and in another dimension than other song writers.
