Streisand doesn't have the feel for the material that Marilyn McCoo (spelling?) does. When Barbara sings, "one less egg to fry", you get the feeling she's never fried an egg in her life. When Marilyn McCoo sings that lyric, you feel the heartbreak and the bitterness.
oh... :') My Heart is moved every single time.... i feel my chest starts vibrating....it's a weird feeling....and as i type, im getting goosebumps and a strange thing in my back neck.... ...... oh oh oh... oooh please be there! you're the barbra Effect!
@Kelticgirl1 Listen to the Luther Vandross version of A House is Not a Home. Or watch the video, which brought down the house and made Dionne Warwicke cry.
@corvus13 - I know of Luther Vandross's version of this song, and as a great as it is, I still prefer Barbra's version of this sung from a woman's perspective.Just as I would also prefer Glady's Knight's version of the song " Where would I be" if it were also sung by Luther Vandross as well. (RIP Luther.)
This wonderful cut was released on the album "Barbra Joan Streisand" in late 1971, produced by Richard Perry, who produced many albums with Carly Simon, the Pointer Sisters, et al. Pick up the Barbra CD for an interesting collection of songs from ballads to interesting takes on rock and funk, including backup by a lesbian female band called Fanny. :)
Gotta agree with wy2h2: this generation will associate the song with Glee (since this is the version they re-created). I felt much the same when my niece heard the original version of The Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love" and remarked that they had copied it from Phil Collins and really didn't know how to sing it like he did!
What a phenomenal "duet" with herself, Ms Streisand has recorded. The arrangement, the voice(s), the emotion, the sense of timing--perfect. Thanks for this post. Don't ever take it away.
BARBRA JOAN STREISAND..WE WORE THIS RECORD OUT!!..MY FRIENDS IN CONNECTICUT LOVED THIS SONG IN PARTICULAR..IT WAS ALWAYS THE GOOD NIGHT SONG AT THE END OF THE NIGHTWHEN THE BAR WAS CLOSING A TRUE DANCE FLOOR PACKER ALLTHE YOUNG LOVERS..AH YES..
A wonderful voice singing an incredible arrangement. A song for the ages! Thank you for this post. What feeling and luscious wonder in this medley. Thank you, Ms. Streisand for sharing your talent.
I love Kristin but she, unfortunately, does not do this song justice on Glee. That show ruins classics, though, this is not the place to rant on about that. ;) On another note, Barbra's voice in this song is pure magic. No one can compare Barbra, one of the last true belters in the dying business. Younger people should not have to watch that show to know the greatness that is Barbra Stiresand. Sadly, classics such as this are fading. :( Oh well, that's just my input. :]
This is my first time (knowingly) listening to Barbra Streisand (I've only recently got into musicals and such). I didn't think I'd like her - I don't know why, considering I've loved every song Glee has covered by her, but I didn't think she'd be the type I'd listen to...I was, obviously, completely and utterly wrong. I'm in love with her voice.
Though, I think I like KC's cover of this song just a litle bit more, simply because she's my favorite singer and I'm just obsessed with her voice.
I am not the biggest Barbara Streisand fan but lets not get crazy ... her talent is immense ... merge her talent with Bacharach and you have the ultimate pop classic.
So glad thismusic was made and available ... Thank you MsStreisand and Mr Bacharach. Beautiful !
This will always remind me of my mother. All those late nights, lights off, and only the sound of Barbara Streisand while my dad was away in Iraq. And my mother's overdramatic rendition of, "One less bell to answer....each time the doorbell rings I still RUUUUUNNNNNNN (one egg to fry) one less man to pick up after.....no more laughter, no more loveeeeeeeeee!!!"
I've never seen Glee, because it looks stupid. I do appreciate that it introduces a younger generation to some really good music. I wish they'd give some credit to the original artists though.
@didirey my sentiments exactly! I had never heard this version. I loved The 5th Dimention and Dionne Warwicks House is not a home when I was a kid. Then when Luther Vandross remade House is not a home, I loved that even more. Then because I'm a GLEEK I was amazed how the two songs blended together so well I thought they thought that up, but now I see Barbara did first and WOW. No one can touch Barbara.
@wy2h2 Well, since Glee only does covers of songs, the watchers will know that this was originally sung by someone else. Still, though, I pray that the show makes them look the original version up.
@AceBellamanx Duh. it's a cover show. Like broadway musicals that use pop songs. They do make their own arrangements and mashups though. This was an already existing medley but things like Halo/Sunshine they created on their own.
"One Less Bell To Answer" was originally done by the 5th Dimension, with Dionne Warwick doing "A House is Not A Home". She did a wonderful job on putting the two songs together.
Intially, I didn't think Barbra's version was a strong as the (abeit heavily audio-tuned) Glee version, however, she really does belt the song out at the end, which really does revive it for me.

Thank you for the posting. 'Glee' recently lifted this arrangement for a duet between Matthew Morrison and Kristin Chenoweth in a season two episode. I didn't see any credit given to the original 'mash-up'. I hope that I just missed it.
This was one of our LP cuts when I worked at WFTL in Fort Lauderdale. I often played it on the overnight show when I needed a long song. There was just something magic about playing this on the radio with the lights in the studio down low. I think of the great time I had at WFTL whenever I hear it.
My mom told me that it's a very sad film, about prostitutes who work at a popular brothel, busy all year through, but, empty on holidays, when their clients stay home with their families.
