  • Her playing is beautiful! :] Nonetheless, I do feel she kind of lowers the value of the dotted crotchet, and that's not very pleasant...

  • Well...Marta Argerich playing Chopin is unbelievable!! thanks.

  • In '65.during the Competition, Miss Argerich, strode onto the stage to play this sonata, sporting a minniskirt, those world class legs there, and smoking a Marlboro. Ripped thru the first 2 movements with sarcastic ferocity, taking a puff in between, and only put out the cig during the march, to grudgingly honor the memory of the composer. Lit up at the completion, flashed a hostile glance at the jury, and strode off, no bow. Decades before Reagan, stared down the Commies.

  • @fredericfranc ... I love this comment. Fantastic!

  • @fredericfranc

Haha, that sounds just like something she'd do!

But can you tell me where you found that information?

  • I love you Martha. your great!

  • Poste une vidéo de toi et on pourra comparer et surtout rire .

    Arrogant vaniteux §§

  • she' s just a machine..no feelings in her playings..

  • Poste une vidéo de toi en train de jouer cette sonate et onpourra comparer ...

  • @thbatman u really must be kiding...

  • Gilels and Horowitz liked pancakes. Rubinstein didn't but, and this is a big BUT, he didn't like sweet things. i have a penchant for Argerich. She knows when to INTERPRET the piece, and when to let it simply FLOW, something neither Andrè Previn or Angela Landsbury ever did. Neither did Tom Jones.

  • BOOBIES #LOL #OMG

  • I've been working on this peice for a little over a year. Honestly one of the most challenging peices I've ever tried to master.

  • The 1st mov. of the Op.35 being easily the hardest interpretively in all of Ch., I did the bad thing and compared everybody. Who wins? Cortot and Rachmaninoff have too much of the 19th C. stuff in there. Martha too shrill, Horowitz, in both versions here, too mannered, Michelangeli unfocused. Witold Malcuzynski gets the gold, Rubinstein, and Gilels (rec. from '49 here) share the silver. Takes brains and right tone to nail it.

  • Not totally convinced by this interpretation : a lot of passion, subtil pianissimi but not exactly the spirit of Chopin because too in a hurry

  • wow she is a good piano player=)

  • hahahahahaha

She's one of the best in the world

  • I don't know if it's just me getting used to the song, but it seems as though this version by her seems much more organized and centered- as if it's going somewhere, idk.. just the cadential patterns..seem more obvious

    I love it : D

  • how old is this recording?

  • 4:37 - 4:53

She broke it! Pogorelich plays that moment like "oh!"

    Different moments great

  • this is much better than Sokolov,much clearer, and focused; if that's what you went, Sokolov was more turgid, moody;

  • sexism to the max! utter bullshit this a great recording

  • the only reason you "heard a woman's touch" is becuz u'd seen the picture first u sexist jackass and reflects nothing on the actual execution of the piano piece so argerich 1 you 0

  • Comment removed

  • Stupid comment.

  • chopin got the blues

  • superb!

  • this is a graceful performance, unlike mr horowitz's

  • Superb interpretation!!!!!

    A real gift to treasure!

  • i lurve this song x]

  • omg it's amazing!! bravo!!

  • ........................

  • Unico mio MERAVIGLIOSO AMORE.Ciao

  • It's very good i love her musicality, it's just perfect !

  • Liebromesistal, don't you have nothing best to do in your life than to pick up all Argerich's videos on YouTube and to went your spleen on her playing ? What do you expect in doing this ? You don't understand Argerich's talent, it's a pity for you, but it's not necessary to cry it from the house-tops !

  • I agree. How can anybody try to trash such superb pianism? I think it's envy or bigotry or some such base emotion.

  • It's different. They both are piano gods.

  • She is one of my favorite pianists too, but this interpretation is not one of my favorites. The rubato seems illogical somehow, disproportionate. This is a common interpretation problem I find with many pianists

  • great! where's the rest?

  • I just love how when the music asks for fire, she gives you a whole firework! Brilliant, indeed! One of my favorite pianists.

  • She's an insanely talented pianist.

  • WONDERFUL

  • I LOVE IT!!!!!! I've been familiar with her recording of the B Minor (EMI, mid-60s) for some time, which knocked my socks off. First time I've heard her B-flat minor....this is classic Argerich....Byronic (which is what the music is), steely, titanic. Argerich is like no other, she makes her own laws and justifies every one of them. This is the authentic Romanticism. I've got to get my hands on the CD of this!!!

  • Awesome! I think she conveys the wild, unrestrained, unsettled mood better than anyone. Some pianists try to make something polished and elegant and thereby butcher the very character of this movement. Not Argerich. This is HER.

  • beautiful! but i like pogorelich's version better

  • Would you kindly post the whole thing? I mean all the movements, including the 2nd, 3th and 4th. Thank you very much! I like all of them.

  • Beautiful Chopin's sonata. I'd like to invite watching Nuccio Trotta's performances. An unknown pianist who studied with great pianists as Aldo Ciccolini. I think that's a pianist worth listening in to. Thanks.

  • my favourite part starts at 4:37

  • Elle donne l'impesion de ne pas toucher le piano ... c'est leger comme la brise ... magnifique !

  • It's so great!

Is it possible for you to post other movements too?

    It's such a passionate recording!

    I really like it!

  • She ranks IMHO with the greatest of the last century! Brava! TY.

  • I like her use of generous pedal through the composition to make the piece flow better. Other than her eccentric alterations in rhythm and relatively fast tempo, I actually found this mellow/tempestuous intepretation fairly convincing.

  • garrickohlsson-Are you the famous one himself?

  • No,just a fan.

  • garrickohlsson, For being "just a fan" your remark is rather arrogant.

  • strikerdisc-Hope that you get better soon!

  • she plays this sonata sooo goood....

  • please post the entire sonata

  • Apparently, you never read the score! Because Chopin indicated these repeats. As the great Svjatoslav Richter, I find it's a shame for all those pianists who do not respect the intention of the composer by omitting the repeats.

  • I do read the score. And I do think that repeat should be made, but... Argerich returns to Bb (Doppio movimento) instead of going back all the way to the very beginning to D-flat (Grave).

There repeat sign which we have now in almost every edition was placed there not by Chopin, but by one of the editors (who thought he is smarter than the composer). Don't believe me? Check the manuscript.

  • Juturna revived! God, she's a truly a goddess!

  • This is a great rendering of this sonata. All the repeats indicated by Chopin are made, and the playing is thrilling. The third movement (the famous dead-march) is heart-gripping, very simple with no declamatory effects, and the last movement is terrific with a true sotto voce playing. Really, Chopin playing of the highest order. Only those who do not love Chopin or do not understand him can say that there is more interesting Chopin.

  • this is legend!!

  • Stunning playing by M. Argerich, as usual.

Please... post the 4th movement :)

  • ok...i will do it soon :)

  • Presently the best female pianist on earth, and possibly the best period.

  • Thank you for your comment...but i have to say that it's just for your preference.

  • Interesting comment, especially since you always seem to bash Richter's Chopin...or...anything Richter...

  • Smith is a whiny moron. Ignore him for your own sake. GODDESS, NYMPH, DIVINE...

    ~ A Midsummer Night's Dream

Argerich should've been there instead of Hermia.

  • I totally agree...:D

    Unfortunately, I just can't stand idiots...so...yeah...

  • Martha is a goddess!

  • the best version ever

  • i am in awe of her ability to create musical drama
