In '65.during the Competition, Miss Argerich, strode onto the stage to play this sonata, sporting a minniskirt, those world class legs there, and smoking a Marlboro. Ripped thru the first 2 movements with sarcastic ferocity, taking a puff in between, and only put out the cig during the march, to grudgingly honor the memory of the composer. Lit up at the completion, flashed a hostile glance at the jury, and strode off, no bow. Decades before Reagan, stared down the Commies.
Gilels and Horowitz liked pancakes. Rubinstein didn't but, and this is a big BUT, he didn't like sweet things. i have a penchant for Argerich. She knows when to INTERPRET the piece, and when to let it simply FLOW, something neither Andrè Previn or Angela Landsbury ever did. Neither did Tom Jones.
The 1st mov. of the Op.35 being easily the hardest interpretively in all of Ch., I did the bad thing and compared everybody. Who wins? Cortot and Rachmaninoff have too much of the 19th C. stuff in there. Martha too shrill, Horowitz, in both versions here, too mannered, Michelangeli unfocused. Witold Malcuzynski gets the gold, Rubinstein, and Gilels (rec. from '49 here) share the silver. Takes brains and right tone to nail it.
I don't know if it's just me getting used to the song, but it seems as though this version by her seems much more organized and centered- as if it's going somewhere, idk.. just the cadential patterns..seem more obvious
the only reason you "heard a woman's touch" is becuz u'd seen the picture first u sexist jackass and reflects nothing on the actual execution of the piano piece so argerich 1 you 0
I like how when she gets to the climax of the piece she ruins it just like everything else she plays.........i mean she rushes through it with total disregard for emotion.........Chopin must be flipping in his grave.
I think Idil Biret approaches this piece with a lot more skill and attention to detail. No doubt Argerich puts a lot of emotion into this piece, but it seems a bit hurried and sloppy. She makes it sound more like Beethoven than Chopin.
Liebromesistal, don't you have nothing best to do in your life than to pick up all Argerich's videos on YouTube and to went your spleen on her playing ? What do you expect in doing this ? You don't understand Argerich's talent, it's a pity for you, but it's not necessary to cry it from the house-tops !
She is one of my favorite pianists too, but this interpretation is not one of my favorites. The rubato seems illogical somehow, disproportionate. This is a common interpretation problem I find with many pianists
I LOVE IT!!!!!! I've been familiar with her recording of the B Minor (EMI, mid-60s) for some time, which knocked my socks off. First time I've heard her B-flat minor....this is classic Argerich....Byronic (which is what the music is), steely, titanic. Argerich is like no other, she makes her own laws and justifies every one of them. This is the authentic Romanticism. I've got to get my hands on the CD of this!!!
Awesome! I think she conveys the wild, unrestrained, unsettled mood better than anyone. Some pianists try to make something polished and elegant and thereby butcher the very character of this movement. Not Argerich. This is HER.
Beautiful Chopin's sonata. I'd like to invite watching Nuccio Trotta's performances. An unknown pianist who studied with great pianists as Aldo Ciccolini. I think that's a pianist worth listening in to. Thanks.
I like her use of generous pedal through the composition to make the piece flow better. Other than her eccentric alterations in rhythm and relatively fast tempo, I actually found this mellow/tempestuous intepretation fairly convincing.
Apparently, you never read the score! Because Chopin indicated these repeats. As the great Svjatoslav Richter, I find it's a shame for all those pianists who do not respect the intention of the composer by omitting the repeats.
I do read the score. And I do think that repeat should be made, but... Argerich returns to Bb (Doppio movimento) instead of going back all the way to the very beginning to D-flat (Grave).
There repeat sign which we have now in almost every edition was placed there not by Chopin, but by one of the editors (who thought he is smarter than the composer). Don't believe me? Check the manuscript.
This is a great rendering of this sonata. All the repeats indicated by Chopin are made, and the playing is thrilling. The third movement (the famous dead-march) is heart-gripping, very simple with no declamatory effects, and the last movement is terrific with a true sotto voce playing. Really, Chopin playing of the highest order. Only those who do not love Chopin or do not understand him can say that there is more interesting Chopin.
Much better than she normally does in Chopin. There's some interest in the shapes of the phrase here nor does she try to bluster her way through sections as she oft does in this repertoire.BUT Friedman,Rosenthal
Paderewski,Richter,& even Bunin on Youtube r much more interesting Chopin.
Her playing is beautiful! :] Nonetheless, I do feel she kind of lowers the value of the dotted crotchet, and that's not very pleasant...

Not totally convinced by this interpretation : a lot of passion, subtil pianissimi but not exactly the spirit of Chopin because too in a hurry

Much prefer Rubinstein for this piece. He gives this piece nobility, which is something Argerich, with all her banging, is never able to achieve.
