This led to the infamous press box game as both Danny Ford and Bobby Ross had to coach from the press box in the next game between the 2 teams .I'm not sure what Ross did,but i believe it for the same thing that Ford did arguing with the reffs.
Not only did he not catch that pass, the playclock was at 0 before the play started.
As Danny Ford said to the head referee (whose crew had also made a bad call the week before in Chapel Hill), "I called you a sonofabitch last week and I'll call you one this week."
@trebcourie lol @ Danny Ford. I'm an Arkansas fan and he never really did much at Arkansas, although he finally recruited a good team for the first time in his tenure and he finally wouldve had a good team but Arkansas fired him and gave it to Houston Nuttsack and Nuttsack got to look good in 1998 and 1999 with Danny Ford's players.
Clearly NOT a catch...the receiver didn't even have control of the ball! The official who called it a touchdown should have been suspended until further notice...
Actually I think one of the worst in history is a basic idea of missing the downs. During a Mizzou vs. Nebreska game they gave Nebreska 5 downs to score the winning TD at the end of the game. But the amazing part is the fact that not 1 defensive player nor any of the coaches said anything to the Refs. I mean wtf.
Not even close to the worst call ever. The official could have called it either way, catch or drop. Worst call ever was the '79 Rose Bowl. Charles White drops the ball on the 2 yard line and is given credit for a touchdown, which was the winning margin.
Were the refs smoking something? He didn't have any possession of the ball and they gave it to them! Did they fine or suspend the refs for the bad call?
astanfo, You know illegal, I'm in kind of a pissed off mood right now and I gave my opinion in a civil manner.
Since you can't be civil, I certainly wish you were within punching distance of me and then you can try to call me an idiot. Of course, the way you latino gangbangers operate, I wouldn't be surprised to see you pull a gun on me.
wow, i'm just gonna go with BluntFella on this one because you (astanfo) brought this argument in an un-gentleman's manner and called him an idiot, which yes BluntFella you shouldn't be THAT pissed off... also, "i wish you were in punching distance" just think of that again astanfo and please tell me how that makes him in 6th Grade and a Maryland fan? are you trying to be cool and bring him down, because that is what internally insecure people do, bring other people down. BluntFella, how does
Keneko, I figured there was a chance he was a latino type of gangbanger fella because of his name. By the way, did you notice that I posted my remarks one year ago?
@fpcguitarist320 so your saying that he DID have possession of the ball for a very miniscule infantesimal amount of time. the rules only say that he has to have possession. not he has to have possession long enough for people to feel comfortable with.
I thought it was a catch too. I had to watch it a few times to see he bobbled the ball and dropped it.... At the time, before instant replay and challenging plays and such, I can see it being called a TD. Tough call to make, but if it happened today, with replay and challenging, they would rule it a drop.
That was an awesome call!

I think officials period have something against Clemson at all times.

even under the less strict NCAA catch rules, he didn't secure the ball long enough to be called a catch.

you know whats funny? at 0:04 it says the score is 31-31, then they get a touchdown pass and it goes to 34?.. LOL. what kind of crap is this?
KCG444 1 year ago
no, not a second or two, he has to take at least 2 steps. and it has to be way longer than a second. all he did was got it then dropped it
KCG444 1 year ago

that was a catch - in 1986 (20+ years ago).
Today - no way.
Rules were different then...
FatRef300 3 years ago
it was 31 to 31.. then when he made that touchdown catch he got three more points? im lost.
but that wasnt a touchdown catch.
IronMaidenDoD 3 years ago
he caught it and appeared to have posession?
steeltowndude 3 years ago
Wow, that was worse than the Tuck Rule and the Hotch call in the SD/Broncos game combined...
Honorarius 3 years ago
The "Tuck Rule" was actually the right call according to the rulebook, the problem is the rulebook is stupid on that particular point.
I'd never seen this call before - this really is probably the worst in history.

He needed two feet in and control of the ball. He had control for one second but then he wobbled it when his second feet hit. Not a touchdown.

That was a good call. He caught the ball which is all he has to do in the endzone, and also had both feet planted too, which wasn't a requirement.
BluntFella 3 years ago
he clearly never had possession though

He appears to have possession of the ball for a second or two. I believe that's all he has to do.
BluntFella 3 years ago
more like not even a second, time it if you want from the time it even touches him to when he drops it
fpcguitarist320 3 years ago
he had it in the end zone. the rules are really expandable when they catch in their.
