  • I remember when i was a kid when the Submarine was close for many years, you could still see the mermaid statues and the giant eel, but now it's just a submarine with tv on the windows. How lame :/

  • I would love to see something in Disney with the Neverland Mermaids. :]

  • imagine if one drowned...

  • Wow I didn't know the mermaids were actually workers swimming around in mermaid tails. Cool!!! Why'd they have to ruin it? I wonder how the swimmers kept a safe distance from the subs.

  • @Miracle490d They had to stop the mermaids because they were getting poisoned by carbon monoxide.

  • @Razzle1203 OH that's too bad. it's a shame they couldn't find a way to keep it going safely for the workers. It looked really cool. Would've made a good little mermaid ride, but wouldn't want people getting sick and dying for it. I hope nobody died before they realized the cause.

  • @Razzle1203 Hey it just occured to me, how were they breathing in the carbon monoxide if they were holding their breath under water? Were they still breathing through a snorkle or something?

  • @Razzle1203 I was reading back and saw that wasn't the only reason aparantly. If they could solve the poisoning and looks like green hair from chlorine, they'd still have crazy boys jumping in after the pretty girls. I got a solution for that one. Everyone goes on about hot mermaids, but the little mermaid had over weight older women mermaids and mermen. If Disneyland put average people in mermaid suits ***Like The Little Mermaid Movie Had*** drooling boys might not jump in -its still realism.

  • The dockman had to give it a good kick to get it going at 4:52.

  • Wow! I didn't know this video existed!

  • I like this ride with the mermaids better than the ride now with Nemo and i wasn't even on it!!! And Walt was still alive? WOW!! When did he die? I LOVED the music when the let the sub go! Mermaids ROCK!!! They REALLY need to make the Nemo ride a Little Mermaid ride!!!!

  • @zukolover666

Walt passed away in December of 1966.

  • @KatangHarmony Thankies!!! <3

  • LOL... 4:03...

Walt had to think fast to keep her from falling, but all he could do was grab her chest.

I know his intentions were benign and noble, but it still looks funny.

  • The noise at the end scared me. It's like a sea serpent will pop out or something lol. This in my opinion was one of the most brilliant things Disney has done :) I do wish they'd bring it back somehow, someday......like at the living seas with Nemo or something.

  • Me, too! They kind of revived the ride with that new Finding Nemo submarine ride in Disneyland, CA. But if they remake it in WDW, FL, they should include character cameos from more movies (like donkified Pinnochio walking along the ocean floor in the beginning, art from the Disney movie Atlantis as well as Kita and Milo swimming by the murals, Ariel and her sisters in their grotto, etc)!

  • Wow, that ride looks SO amazing! I wish they had something like it in WDW! And I wish they brought the mermaids back for the new one in Disneyland!

  • they would have to make it so the girls dont get sick

  • Oh, yeah. But they could have multiple mermaids who alternate throughout the day (have two to six in the pools at all times, routines at certain times, and two extra mermaids on standby). And they'd need better security for the pools; from what I've read, some idiotic boys would dive in after them!

  • Sick from what?

  • Sorry, but you know that the mermaids are NEVER coming back.

They've been gone since the mid-1960's and they had several reasons why they had to pull them, such as the fact that some overzealous young men would jump into the lagoon and try to swim out to them.

  • You're kidding! Why didn't someone have security for the girls swimming considered for the design? Anything from having the guests at a higher altitude than the mermaids (high enough so any dumbbutts who try are rightfully brained), fences, extra security cameras and stuff! Or they could have the mermaids somewhere else, instead of part of the ride. If the boys didn't get them, the subs would!

  • I'm not kidding! It's a fact!

Did you ever read any DL history books or even go to see the "DL First 50 Magical Years" film which starred Steve Martin?!

  • Huh. Guess Disney wasn't always the "clean" place of purity I thought it was. Then again, I think someone said Disney did hallucinogens, which is how he came up with the Heffalumps/Woozles scene in Winnie the Pooh and the creey forest scene in Snow White.

  • But sorry, no. My family's a bunch of Disney dorks, but we've only memorized the movies & visited the FL park so many times I could walk through the whole thing in my sleep and not get lost. But I've been meaning to check out the books! And thanks for the movie head's up!

  • @disneynut06 I remember that I went to Disneylando when I was 7 (15 years ago) and I can swear that mermaids were there!

  • @VickyTyler That's impossible.

  • @VickyTyler I take that back. You may have seen Ariel but definitely not in the lagoon.

  • @jamievmey Hahaha, I've seen other vids with fake mermaid on this ride!!

  • Comment removed

  • @ztslovebird They did, and it was better...

  • omg im sacred of subs. likeat 0:47 omg i hate when they pop like that. they look like monsters soo scaryyyy! :[[

  • I was wondering why I was scared too, haha.

I think the ocean in general is scary.

    :/

  • Did you see Walt grab the christener's boob?

  • TOTALLY DID! 4:03

  • WOAH!!! At 9:16 one mermaid was extremely close to one of the Giant Sea Bass!!!!!!! I would NOT go near one of the animatronics. I freaked out once when I turned to my right on "It's a Small World" and 1 foot away from me was a SINGING ANIMATRONIC MARY BLAIR CHILD. And his mouth was tearing at the corner. Next thing I knew they were using smelling salts on me. ;) Also, the Lincolnbot frightens me to pieces. Viva La Disneyland!! LOL

  • u can soo tell that those r sooo fake!! i mean seriously how did they get mirrors?? and sparkly tails?

  • (.... and where ist Esther Williams?)

  • Uh... Nelson?! on the Nautilus? Even this is just Disney... it's really funny !

Good old Admiral, what a coincidence.

  • they look so fake..

  • cool r they real mermaids??????????

  • haha wow. the current ride of this is pretty awesome, especially at night, except I don't get how they do those fish effects under water? I think its tv's, but wouldn't they break underwater? Maybe they are in a glass case or something, IDK

  • Makes you think.

  • COOL!

  • I posted a view # of 10,720 for this video 2 days ago. Now it is over 613,081. Thanks Yahoo for your story!

  • That was pretty neat. I never thought there were videos as old as these on youtube. By the way, nice seeing Walt Disney. The fact that the mermaids were once part of the ride was interesting. They did synchronized swimming. It was pretty interesting how they got them to breathe underwater for such a long period. The only question I have: did they stop putting mermaids because the rides were getting more mechanized?

  • She lost her balance and almost fell. He grabbed her to pull her back. Watch the film more closely.

  • Many of the attactions (had a friend who worked at WDW) like this have breathing apparati installed behind rocks and fake corals. Basically, a scuba divers mouthpiece hidden away with an off and of switch so they can take a quick breath when need be and you won't see a lot of bubbles.

  • And by stating that, I could just as easily say that you made a "typical female comment", but I won't, as that would be sexist...

  • She is better at * Christening * than I am. I once * Christened * a lightpole with a beer bottle on New Years Eve, 7 stiches in and around my thumb.

  • 5:55 starts Mermaids, those with short attention spans..

  • OMG thank you Kooodeal.. lol

  • Your welcome ,5:55 starts mermaids if you missed it.

  • I thought they always had mermaids. They were there in '68 when we went. I was four so I didn't get to see them. My dad was blocking the window!

  • Ummmmmmmm, Yahoo told me i could find the mermaids here?

  • I think that admiral is a puppet and Walt is making him talk. That must be it.....

  • i'd kill myself if i had the mermaids' job..

  • You notice that Walt is mouthing the exact same words the Admiral is saying?

  • he is! hahaha! :D

  • yeah i saw that too

  • wait...so there really were swimmers in the pool and not puppets?

  • ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZ....oh wait!!..what just happend??...

  • I bet that kid got his ass beat when he got home.

"Don't you EVER embarrass me in front of Walt Disney again you little shit!" haha

  • "Oh no! Please put the belt away Dad!"

  • "No, you little shit! I didn't even want you anyway. Now stop moving or I'll hit your legs and your back. Don't you put that hand back there because I'll hit that too."

  • @veloriumcaptain LOL I thought that was funny. I used to put my hand back there when I got whipped. And parents can get embarrassed by stupid things. I got hit once cuz I said, "mom you flipped your wig!" She was wearing a wig at the time, so she got red. LOL

  • that is freaking crazy!

  • Look at Disney's lips!! He knows by heart the Marine's speech!!!

  • LOL thats heckka funny

  • I'm wondering if he was prepared for the reading of the speech, including the numerous uses of "nuke-yoo-lar"...all coming from the so-called "experts".

  • Good Call.

  • You can be paid to be a Mermaid. Here is Las Vegas, there is a mermaid show at the Silverton Hotel and Casino.

  • @mzzcat2u I'll bet all the mermaids have to be hotties. Do they have any boy mermaids in Vegas? It's not fair if they only have girls. I wouldn't mind seeing some topless hunks swimming around. Girls deserve an eyeful too. Especially if you're gonna let your men look without smacking them. LOL

  • Did you see Walt grab her titty at 4:03?

  • o Sh!t he did. hahahahaha

  • lol that's funny

  • Well, it sure appears that he did! LOL!

  • Lol Nazis:(

  • i agree with geendayrox89. being paid to be a freakin mermaid would be SWEEEEEEEEET! :D

  • that is sooo darling, i'd love to see real - or tranny - women dancing around underwater in their supercute mermaid-like outfits. especially the ones with beautiful large mermaid breasts of life! what a wonderful site that would be - let it be!

  • Why not bring the mermaids back? Who doesn't love looking at beautiful women?

  • According to the movie they show at Disneyland about the park, they had to be stopped because men kept jumping into the water to swim to the lovely ladies.

  • lol that and the chlorine turning their hair green

  • No mermaids in Finding Nemo. ;)

  • Wow - so cool. When I was a kid (in the 70s), I went on the "Submarine Voyage" ride. The mermaids by then were "animatronic." I can still see them (and it freaked me out)...

  • i blame yahoo too, lol

  • I know why they stopped with the real mermaids, imagine the vaginitis those girls got after being in those suits and in water all day! Ouch.. not to mention the candidiasis, too.

  • what the crap!? they used to have REAL people playing mermaids???? thats the coolest job ive ever seen omg i wish they still had this ride/used real people friggin awesome

  • you have no idea how much i envy those mermaids.

  • hey idiot the nazis were in world war 2

  • I think the Mermaids were making a Swastika around the 8 minute mark.

For people today who were not around back then, that was a symbol used by the Nazis during World War 1 and meant that they believe in boycotting Jewish businesses that sold "Crystal Night" chandeliers. The company went bacnkrupt after the war and the factory was used by Oscar Schindler to store the bodies of dead Jewish soldiers who had been killed on the Russian front....

  • I think ol' Walt copped a feel at 4:03.

  • bugleboy - this was shot during the 1950s when, due to feminism, it was socially acceptable for men to fondle women in public, and the women could not say anything about it. Some women who did complain were given the label "Rosie the Riveter," and sent away to work in factories. These women became the forefathers of today's lesbians.

  • haha idk if u were trying to be funny with that last sentence but it made me laugh.

  • "These women became the forefathers of today's lesbians." ???

This sentence makes my brain hurt.

  • I don't understand why this post got 6 thumbs down. I think people must have taken it seriously. People, it was obviously a joke. If not, then, wow.

  • yo if i was paid to be a mermaid i would do it! thatd be an awsome job!!!

  • what cool job! I would have loved to work as a mermaid! You'd get to swim all day and kids would get so excited to see you. awesome =)

    Thanks for the vid!

  • Mermaids ran...I mean swam off with my wallet. I had 2 bucks in there... :(

  • Exactly!

  • oh mama.... to have been there and actually "talk" to the mermaids... ah yeah.... the good ol days.

  • I for one do not trust mermaids. In my personal experience with them, they are always pulling some shady shit.

  • That was really cool! Thanks!

  • Those who think that the mermaids make a Swastika at around 8:11, it is actually called the PINWHEEL and is a standard of several gymnastic and water aquatic dance programs. It is NOT a Swastika.

  • Comment removed

  • THAT WOULD BE SUCH A TIGHT ASS JOB!

  • why does Walt Disney look so uncomfortable? and how in the world did those "mermaids" hold their breath for so long?! it seemed like a scripted little mini movie....

  • do you really want to know how they held their breath so long?

  • how?

  • they had a 6x6 oxygen tank hiddne up their rectum and a small breathing tube glued to their bodies.

at least thats what i was always told, lol.

  • the mermaids do make a swatsica at 8:11

  • didn't look much like a swastica to me. looked more like they were trying to make a circle with a plus in the center

  • those arent real mermaids!

  • fake mermaids?...You sir have crushed my dreams...

  • ohh, duno whther true o not is like shooting a movie.... ^_^

  • around 8:11 it looks eerily like the nazi cross...

  • its called the swastika dumbshit

  • it is the swastika! if you draw it out they make a almost perfect swastika... and Walt had a mustache that looked similar to Hitler? I am thinking Walt Disney might have been a Nazi.

  • If you ask anyone that plays one of the characters in they will most likely agree with you.

  • *Lolz* Oh, Those silly college dudes!

  • I remember this ride and the mermaids back in 1992! =D

  • That is sweet, man.

  • おもしろいですいね?

  • NAVY!!!!

  • I remember going on this ride in 1960 and/or 1967 - but I don't remember the mermaids! : - (

  • notice that his hand is hidden behind the speaker and hes barely moving his mouth? ventriloquist imo

  • Walt disney was an anti-semite and also horrible at reading a teleprompter.

  • was this filmed last year or something?

  • hahaha he's totally mouthing dude's speech, why??

  • They used to also have a sunning rock that they would rest on. I have been going to Disneyland since 1957.

  • Looks like hes telling him what to say through the hole speech, like "what are they called...vantrilokwist" or how ever its spelled lol

  • wow. even back then disney land was amzing.

  • These were real people (not robotic ones). Weeki Wachee Springs was an attraction near Tampa, FL that had underwater "mermaids". The girls learned how to swim underwater for long periods of time.

Disney dd use robotic mermaids later (they looked very Barbie-like) but the ones in this video were real. Did they hire them for the opening of this ride only? or did they use them during the early days (weeks/months/years) of the ride? Does anyone know?

  • THAT WOULD BE SO MUCH FUN!

  • Did those things ever actually go underwater on those tracks?

  • Only partially.

  • The music was way to cheesy back then and their voices sucked specially the narrators...

  • You're not looking at it with an open mind. You need to remember how dated it is... this is the way America was back then. Instead of looking on it with negativity, look at it as something special.

  • they replaced the submarine ride .. with a Finding Nemo ride...

  • omg how do they swimm with that thing onnn sumone tell me

  • A lot of upper body strength is needed to be able to swim like that.

  • Really? What happened to submarine ride at Disney *World*?

  • some on had open the hatch an water came thru and they all drowned

  • it became the new finding nemo submerine ride in california

  • That would be the BEST summer job EVER! I love swimming and to get PAID for it while making little kids happy :) ♥

  • hmmm its amazing how they (the mermaids) actually look like they are breathing under water... any one know the secret? LOL

  • in the "tall grass" or "blind-spot" of the average citizen is hidden an oxygen tank/supply with a clear hose...and the mermaids hold their breath and smile.

  • Did anyone notice that at 1:50 when the captain guy take over the speech, Walt is mouthing what that guy is saying. I guess he knew the speech too.

  • He totally is mouthing the speech. He licks his lips and bites them too, but there are times where is just mouthing along.

  • So. Walt Disney is Awe-UH-sum! lol.

  • yea, that is a tad weird

  • Wow, I didn't notice that until I read your comment and looked again. It's kind of neat - you can sort of guess what his favorite phrases (or at least the ones that stuck with him the most) in the speech must have been by how obvious it is that he's mouthing something.

  • Seriously, how cool would it be to say you were a mermaid at Disney? You swim. All day. Sounds like a kicking gig to me =]

  • what year was this

  • 1959

  • it is reopened, duh. Its finding nemo now.

  • Whoa, if you look at it without being all logical of course, they actually create like a image of like how Mermaids would look in real life.

    COOL! :D

  • I want to be a mermaid!!

  • swimming like that takes skill! HAHA

  • To bad they renamed all the subs and painted them yellow in 1980.. They didn't want them to be associated with their US Navy "war machine" counterparts... damn hippies! :)

  • Huh........ I worked for the Disney CO in the Early 90's and for his Nephrew Roy Jr. All I can say is Thanks Roy for allow Blacks to be a Part of the Magic Kingdom.

  • So graceful

  • 4:03 walt cops a feel

  • i remember going on this ride when i was a little kid..now its finding nemo

  • Consider the ride improved.

    Signed David

  • Way awesome! I wish they still did this.

  • That's hilarious that Walt is mouthing what the 'Admiral' is saying!

  • Lol it sure does look like it! Though I doubt hes actually mouthing with him. It looks a little off anyway.

  • I'd love a job as a mermaid. XD

  • hahahahaha

  • HAHAHAHAHA

  • did they really have those girls be mermaids???

hmmm..maybe they got the idea of the LITTLE MERMAID from this..who knows rite?

  • Synchronized swimming mermaids. Who knew! lol

    Those kids hair at 8:50........

  • tiny url com / shermeratohlone

  • shes not smoking shes looking at herself in a mirror.

  • they should reopen it

  • LOL
