Why not? Pretty much all the megadrive/genesis music was produced by the 8-bit z80 while the m68k did all the graphics so it's definately possible for an 8-bit processor to kick out pretty decent music.

Of course it's the sound processor that does the majority of the work...

@Pirochiro 4 months old and whatever, but the chip that does the music in the Genesis is the YM2612, NOT the Z80.

Z80 was used only occassionally, and just for support, given it had 3 channels, whereas the YM2612 had 6, of much greater capabilities.

It was used for sound in the Master System, though.

You're sort of on the right track. The YM2612 definately outputs the sound, but it just plays the notes and samples that the m68k or z80 tell it to, so the music is still generated by one of them depending on the game. As far as I'm aware, most games use a z80 program to play the music.
