In the Marines (as a grunt), i stood among the most rough neck, hard core, bulky ass kicking, looking like a wife beating thug with a 'don't give a shit mentality', and yet those guys were weeded out to be approved to Indoc to Recon. Qualifying is like hitting the lottery. Somebody in your unit thought your file merited a second look. There is some favoritism but rest assure, the approval came from someone who's reputation was on the line. God, I don't know where to begin.

I was always impressed by the fact the former Force Recon Marines I encountered rarely talked about their time in Force. They werent braggers or shit talkers, they seemed to have a lot of self control and a calm professionalism about them. They were instantly recognizable in garrison by their gold jump wings and scuba bubble. I have heard that Recon has been diluted by the addition of Recon battalions and MARSOC, but back then they were as good as the SEALS, and maybe even better on land.

this is what i think. MARSOC should go back to its roots. Pre amphibious and post amphibious recon. We already have enough commandos. we do not need the marines to muscle in on commandos. just keep scouting. we have people who can do commando missions. we need scouts.
ATTENTION TO ALL: Marine Force Recon is not the "badass" group of the Marines, they are a backup support "force" group for the Recon Marines, now im not saying that Force Recon is not badass but when it comes to recon, when youve done good in Force Recon you step up to the big league, Marine Recon. and thats just a way to put it.
@RiflemanExpert Actually Marine Division Recon, although very similar to Force Recon, is much more basic to that of the actual Force Recon due to the fact that they are neither trained in combat jumping nor combat diving. All Recon Marines candidates attend BRC (Basic Recon Course) and upon graduation become Recon Marines. It is only those that are willing to devote their whole lives to Force Recon that will even be considered to the strenuous training required to make it.

If you're going to say that Marines aren't top dogs then you are full of shit. I know many people of even other branches who will admit to the Marines being the big boys. srhkid21, recon marines and the later force recon is not even apart of SOCOM so why would you take that intel as valid. In 06 recon marines fell under MARSOC which is not under SOCOM (leave it to the Corps to not wanna touch the rest of the military with a ten foot pole). The only thing that Marines would administer from the Special Forces FM (which I've read front to back) is the basic SERE functions. And everyone uses the same SERE tactics. The rest of the SF FM is outdated and needs revised.
It's no use arguing. In 06 their battalions were deactivated and they were re assigned to "D" companies within recon battalions and later in 08 were reborn into the roles Marine Expeditionary Forces or MEF, highly mobile fleet marines (the ones that's been kickin Somali pirate butt).
Each Special Operations force has their own true dedicated ops utilized by socom and marsoc. Green Berets are unconventional warfare specialists sent in to blend and smoke out the pests (as they did with Sadam). SEALs and Delta and counterterrorist and extraction specialists. Rangers and Recon Marines are Advanced Infantry groups that are highly mobile, highly lethal. Recon though are more combat trained (combat diver, special task). They are not all the same or we wouldn't have em all.
When SEALS, Delta, Rangers, Force Recon, and C.I.A. Special Activities devision need rescuing They call Air Force Pararescue men. I'm Not trying to bad mouth any Devision of the Military but I'm tired of people saying that one is better than the other when that is not the case.
@SJagMP Yes, you are right Pararescue does come out and get us out of shit when needed. But that's the only thing the Air Force has. As a whole we Marines are the best fighting force in the world. It's what were trained for. As Air Force is on the aviation and paper pushing computer side. A fat body can make it through y'alls PFT as if he were eating cake. I remember going to Al Asad. Air Force tanning and simming by the pool there. Why were out there busting our asses.

After BUD/S you still have to do SQT which is another 6 months to a year before earning the Trident, and if your a HM it will take longer because of the extra medical schools for corpsmen going through the SEAL pipeline.

It use to be Force Recon. But now with the creation of MARSOC, Force Recon deals more with reconnaissance whereas MARSOC has more of the direct action missions.

Also yes they do MARSOC didn't join SOCOM until 2005 when they finally did they realized that they're standards were way below that of SOCOM's and so Force Recon Instructors used the Green Berets training manual to modernize their training regime, after they did this they received a high pass/fail ratio for it's applicants.
basically recon marines are less high tech, more bluntly lethal, seals and delta, more high tech, less lethal or less collateral damage... a force recon will kill anything that stands in the path of the mission.. because technically they were not there... seals and delta have to answer questions of collateral damage... force recon doesn't.... autonomy...
seals are easier to use, they operate better for complex task that require less firepower, more control with a bigger force... but when you just need shit to blow up, people or facilities to disappear, or you need seals or delta forces to be rescued or supported you send in the force recon marines, they will willingly get dirtier, they will do whatever it takes to get the mission done, whereas the seals and delta will not...

All Recon Marines candidates attend BRC (Basic Recon Course) and upon graduation become Recon Marines. It is only those that are willing to devote their whole lives to Force Recon that will even be considered to the strenuous training required to make it.

Marines do not bullshit the past and present and knows where they come from, even if that means that the Pentagon wanted Marsoc, instead of giving the Marine Colonels the executive power of Force Recon. srhkid21, recon marines and the later force recon is not even apart of SOCOM so why would you take that intel as valid. In 06 recon marines fell under MARSOC which is not under SOCOM (leave it to the Corps to not wanna touch the rest of the military with a ten foot pole). The only thing that Marines would administer from the Special Forces FM (which I've read front to back) is the basic SERE functions. And everyone uses the same SERE tactics. The rest of the SF FM is outdated and needs revised.

Each Special Operations force has their own true dedicated ops utilized by socom and marsoc. Green Berets are unconventional warfare specialists sent in to blend and smoke out the pests (as they did with Sadam). SEALs and Delta and counterterrorist and extraction specialists. Rangers and Recon Marines are Advanced Infantry groups that are highly mobile, highly lethal. Recon though are more combat trained (combat diver, special task). They are not all the same or we wouldn't have em all.

It is my goal to earn the RIGHT to be called a Marine, and there is no better fighting organization. I entertained the idea of joining the "brilliant navy" and "strong" Army; but I'm taking my 96 AFQT, college degree, and physical grit to the "dumb, crazy" Marine Corps as a grunt, and I couldn't be Prouder. For you know it all civilians who play COD 8 hours a day and claim to be military experts, you are all brainwashed by Hollywood who has glorified some groups more than others. The Marine Corps prides itself on autonomy and self-sufficiency (grab your dictionaries you HS drop outs), and wanting to keep the Marines "in house" and make sure no Marines were viewed as "special," the command decided not to join spec ops until recently.

Based on what little I know, the Navy SEALS are sexier, meaning, they get the high tech toys and weapons whereas Recon is not much more than any Marine. Recon apparently does do stuff most don't know/acknowledge--my brother did say, after he got a written guarantee for 100% disability from the government, that he was involved with an extraction of a high-ranking NVA officer in Laos from a camp in NW DMZ.

After BUD/S you still have to do SQT which is another 6 months to a year before earning the Trident, and if your a HM it will take longer because of the extra medical schools for corpsmen going through the SEAL pipeline.

Force Recon isn't assigned to counter-terrorist and high profile targets, nor do they do things like unconventional warfare, or training local military forces.

Also yes they do MARSOC didn't join SOCOM until 2005 when they finally did they realized that they're standards were way below that of SOCOM's and so Force Recon Instructors used the Green Berets training manual to modernize their training regime, after they did this they received a high pass/fail ratio for it's applicants.

basically recon marines are less high tech, more bluntly lethal, seals and delta, more high tech, less lethal or less collateral damage... a force recon will kill anything that stands in the path of the mission.. because technically they were not there... seals and delta have to answer questions of collateral damage... force recon doesn't.... autonomy...

seals are easier to use, they operate better for complex task that require less firepower, more control with a bigger force... but when you just need shit to blow up, people or facilities to disappear, or you need seals or delta forces to be rescued or supported you send in the force recon marines, they will willingly get dirtier, they will do whatever it takes to get the mission done, whereas the seals and delta will not...
