No one can say classic music is not perfect, because it is. In anyones' mind, no matter how cruel or violent is, this sounds clean every single madness in it, and creates a total state of peace.
I think classical music lives on as the roots of our modern genres. I hear a lot of Beethoven in The Jonas Brothers. They clearly studied the greats like everyone else but they just apply it in a different and new format. :)
yea chinese!!! represent!!! :D chinese ftw...i play piano too. lang lang and yundi li are my fav pianists. learning polonaise in a (military one) and doctor gradus.
Youth is a naive time like monkeys eating bananas. Since bananas are sweet, regard less it is nutrition or poison involved or not. ... Classical music make true winners and the rest make loosers. It is a sad truth.
some of the comments here show a profound level of ignorance to the point that it irritates me to see such idiocy presented! clearly Lang Lang is a genius and to devalue the man simply because he is chinese is blatantly racist, and to claim that asian people play piano like robots represents a huge level of ignorance! I think it's a safe bet to suggest that those who make these comments have no discernible talent whatsoever, which must seem to them a good reason to devalue anothers talent.
@djblackadder Perhaps when they say he plays robotically, they mean he doesn't play so musically, which I kind of can agree with. Lang Lang has achieved reknown as a soloist, and with the major orchestras. But it's not sheer talent that launches careers. His charisma speaks louder than his music-making, which draws ppl who never listen to classical music. Hilary Hahn is a musician (albeit a violinist) whose talent draws people without the exaggerated movements or publicity stunting.
@djblackadder , I agree, only stupid people can't see how stupid is this biased crap......interestingly enough, the ones who hate are never the ones who achieved much.
@djblackadder its not the fact that he is asian. It is just the fact that he is just a show-monkey pop-icon. I cherish my records by the old masters, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Ashkenazy. I do believe in the evolution of classical music and its accessiblity today but what would the old masters think at this sort of artificiality? Its is truly rediculous. He has tremendous technique, but everything is fake. What has pianism in the 21st century come to?
@djblackadder Geniuses create. Bach was a genius. Liszt was a genius. Einstein was a genius. Geniuses don't just play, they make. As far as I've seen, Lang Lang does not create. He just plays.
@Shade0591 I dont agree with that. You can be a genius and not a creator. That is being a composer, but one can still be a musical genius because they feel the music and play like masters. I personally dont like how lang lang plays ive seen his rachmaninoff op 23 no.5 performance and it was jut horrrribbbleee
@juanmaaveiro16 But there's a limit to that. You can only play the piece so well, and you can never go beyond that. To be a genius, you have to be exceptional and out of the ordinary. The only way to display such skill, is to work in the boundaries of your own mind and not be limited to others' imaginations.
@Shade0591 honestly, if you had attempted playing fairly challenging classical music on the piano, it really takes a hell lot to articulate every single note, every single bump and crevice of the piece at its deserved proportion. You're completely mad to even say that Lang Lang is not a genius. Yea anybody can play. What else? Actors can also never be geniuses because they merely 'read the script'? That being said, geniuses also have different degrees, and need not always deserve respect.
@L02T I tell you again, there is a limit. Geniuses can work out of air, but Lang Lang has to work out of a prewritten piece. It seems people don't understand that with discipline to practice an hour or thirty minutes a day one can obtain such skill at playing, but virtuosity requires bonding with music. I wouldn't call Mozart a genius because of how well he could play, I would call him a genius for the beautiful works he made.
@Shade0591 of course there's degrees of geniuses. But if really, 1 hour a day, you can obtain such skill and precision, and care taken to each and every note you play, I'd immediately brand you a genius, whether you wrote it or not. At least I'd never have enough intelligence to surmount that. Playing music, at his level and even below his, takes a lot of mental strength and maturity that no ordinary folk can achieve. It's not just about finger theatrics and hitting the right notes. It's genius.
@L02T When you practice an instrument, you're doing it wrong if you're not focusing on the piece. Practice has mental and physical exercise built into it. It's simply that people are too lazy to find out for themselves what they can do with application of their time and resources.
@L02T Well I believe it's how deep you want to go with the music and how aware you are with the many things there are. I've seen these "ordinary folks" surpassing all my imaginations and then I can't even think where they will be if they keep it that way. But I think 1 part of the genius is the dedication and joy of doing what you like. People that really love what they are doing can achieve amazing things. Also I think horowitz played with his best quality when he was old.
@Shade0591 so is Charles Rosen not a genius for his incredibly astute performance of Mozart's Turkish March for instance, or Ashkenazy for his sublime version of Rachmaninov's 18th variation? These and many more are people who have not composed themselves but their skills as virtuosos are unmatched in the western world. Why do you deny them the value of being considered genius simply because they have not produced a work that fits into the western art music canon?
@djblackadder why don't we just ignore those idiots and assh0les and enjoy the music? who cares what those miserable clowns say anyway. come on, those guys do not even have the fundamental dignity of being a humanbeing and thus should be just simply ignored.
@djblackadder I can't agree with you more.. You know, people here in the states all around me go, "Of course [insert pianist name] is chinese.." and all I do is get pissed off. I won't say that there aren't a lot of chinese pianist, but that's simply because there are 1,331,460,000 chinese to the 307,006,550 people in the us. No shit there are going to be more good pianists coming from china then the US.. there are more than 4 times the people in china than the US. >.>;
@EdmondDantesLeComte Sorry, but your statistics are complete nonsense. Do you know why? You have to compare the actual number of kids who are brought up in their households playing the piano. I can almost guarantee you there are more kids in the US growing up with a piano than kids in China growing up with a piano in the household.
@trtnec What I said wasn't in any way nonsense, as the statistics are completely accurate as of 2009. Now I hadn't thought of the statistics of "pianos to children" ratios between the two countries.. I can't say in any way shape or form what those statistics are either and I think you raise a valid point. My real intention by my comment was to try to voice my opposition to the stereotype that asians are better at the piano simply because they're asian, but that seems to have backfired.
@EdmondDantesLeComte I didn't say those stats weren't accurate, I just pointed out that application of those stats to your hypothesis of "more Chinese therefore more Chinese pianists than American pianists" doesn't work. A better way to compare would be to take the percentage that take piano seriously in each country divided by total pro pianists. I agree there's nothing intrinsically superior about Asians and piano, but I'd say the ones that have access to a piano take it more seriously by far.
@djblackadder I think the most fucken incredible thing is that your comment over 1 year ago is still relevant to the amount of idiots on youtube today and only shows that the community hasn't taken a single step forward.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Bang Bang did made a lot of non-classical music listeners notice classical music. However he definitely failed to bring classical music to anyone because what is played and plays did not fulfil the lowest standard of what classical music should have.
Anyone who said ignoring his gestures are ignorant. Nobody care if a real monkey is playing a piano or not, as long as it plays good people will listen. LL understands no music. He is just as simple as a technically tranied idiot playing a piano.
@ Organman52, you need to see a shrink to sort out your jealousy issue, don't come on to youtube to attack other viewers....go and get an Organ transplant i.e brain or your penis enlargement ....
I don't get all the Lang Lang hatred around here, what's wrong with showmanship and a little arrogance? You think rock stars are any better? Didn't think so. And come on, the guy is still in his twenties for goodness sake.
Yea I agree rock stars aren't any better. But remember that in a style of music, there is both the sound and the whole background.
Rockstars are arrogant and showmen ? That's why people like them ! 'cause that's the "soul" of rock, that's the background which fits the music.
Classical music is more like... humble, adult...
And I think that's why some people dislike Lang Lang. So to like or to dislike him ? I think that's just because of different (and mb both valuable) perceptions of music.
There's plenty wrong with showmanship and arrogance. But the real problem with this man is the PRETENSE. He is a rather successful masquerader, but he is not a great pianist or anything close. Just my opinion.
People that just watch youtube videos and see him rock around while playing don't understand that he truly acts as an ambassator towards classical music.
Lang Lang just has his own way of expressing music to himself. I'm sure when you do some things you act a certain way, but you don't see them bashing you for it.
I think he is really good too. I dont really have problems with his gestures and expressions because I think the music is of foremost concern. His music has really really good stuff in it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I understand why he plays so superficially now. He plays piano like a gymnast would dance a ballet. It really is more sport for him than art. I have always heard that approach in the way he plays and this interview just confirms my suspicions. It's frustrating that so many people fail to see it. Maybe he'll continue to study and mature, finally living up to the praise he so clearly doesn't deserve at this point. I doubt it. It's only about fame to him. He might as well be a rap "musician".
Why are you so confident and arrogant in your opinion? He has studied piano and music for his entire lifetime and achieved international recognition. Do you even have a performer's designation for any instrument? Be a little more humble and treat his interpretations as learning experiences for yourself, rather than labeling him as "undeserving of his praise", when you probably don't even have as vast an understanding of counterpoint, keyboard harmony, or music history as him.
alot of asians have a chip on their shoulder about peoples opinions of LL.hes famous because in his country there is a young vibrant audience for classical music and he is the clothes horse. BUT HE IS SHIT and that is the real truth.ok.
His face is his own little philosophy on how to put expression while performing. No, it is not to show off. And no, if he exaggerates his facial expression, that does not automatically imply he cannot play the piano. And no, just because his manners are not traditionally classical, it does not mean he cannot play classical music.
This is what the majority of retarded comments on Lang Lang videos talk about. Sometimes I wonder if the commenter had sound turned on when they commented.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's not really about his faces and his "non traditional manners". It's about respect for the last three centuries of occidental art. I'm not a traditionalist in any way, but men he disrespect our art in so many ways when he plays occidental music. Is cultural, as we occidentals can't really understand oriental philosophies and way of life, the same happen with them. Don't take this as an agresion, is just my opinion. I don't hate Lang Lang or his faces, but the way he disrespect our music.
I would sound better speaking both his language and this language, then again, his language is my first language, and english is my second, i wouldn't say shit if i didn't know better. I'm just stating the obvious, calm down!
Lang lang is great his style is cool and emotional if its is one thign that i learned about pianist its that they all have diff style abd come in all colors of the rainbow althouhg if may seem asians are the only classical pianist they will tell thats is very wrong. Lang Lang is a great pianist

I think classical music lives on as the roots of our modern genres. I hear a lot of Beethoven in The Jonas Brothers. They clearly studied the greats like everyone else but they just apply it in a different and new format. :)

some of the comments here show a profound level of ignorance to the point that it irritates me to see such idiocy presented! clearly Lang Lang is a genius and to devalue the man simply because he is chinese is blatantly racist, and to claim that asian people play piano like robots represents a huge level of ignorance! I think it's a safe bet to suggest that those who make these comments have no discernible talent whatsoever, which must seem to them a good reason to devalue anothers talent.

Here here. But there is an old saying. Youth is a blunder... which is really a reflection on the type of people posting disrespectful things here.
bombbasticluva 2 years ago
@djblackadder Perhaps when they say he plays robotically, they mean he doesn't play so musically, which I kind of can agree with. Lang Lang has achieved reknown as a soloist, and with the major orchestras. But it's not sheer talent that launches careers. His charisma speaks louder than his music-making, which draws ppl who never listen to classical music. Hilary Hahn is a musician (albeit a violinist) whose talent draws people without the exaggerated movements or publicity stunting.
amariek2 1 year ago
@djblackadder , I agree, only stupid people can't see how stupid is this biased crap......interestingly enough, the ones who hate are never the ones who achieved much.
luigiperso 1 year ago 3
@djblackadder its not the fact that he is asian. It is just the fact that he is just a show-monkey pop-icon. I cherish my records by the old masters, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Ashkenazy. I do believe in the evolution of classical music and its accessiblity today but what would the old masters think at this sort of artificiality? Its is truly rediculous. He has tremendous technique, but everything is fake. What has pianism in the 21st century come to?
sahalexx 1 year ago
@djblackadder Geniuses create. Bach was a genius. Liszt was a genius. Einstein was a genius. Geniuses don't just play, they make. As far as I've seen, Lang Lang does not create. He just plays.
Shade0591 1 year ago
@Shade0591 I dont agree with that. You can be a genius and not a creator. That is being a composer, but one can still be a musical genius because they feel the music and play like masters. I personally dont like how lang lang plays ive seen his rachmaninoff op 23 no.5 performance and it was jut horrrribbbleee
juanmaaveiro16 1 year ago
@juanmaaveiro16 But there's a limit to that. You can only play the piece so well, and you can never go beyond that. To be a genius, you have to be exceptional and out of the ordinary. The only way to display such skill, is to work in the boundaries of your own mind and not be limited to others' imaginations.
Shade0591 1 year ago
@Shade0591 honestly, if you had attempted playing fairly challenging classical music on the piano, it really takes a hell lot to articulate every single note, every single bump and crevice of the piece at its deserved proportion. You're completely mad to even say that Lang Lang is not a genius. Yea anybody can play. What else? Actors can also never be geniuses because they merely 'read the script'? That being said, geniuses also have different degrees, and need not always deserve respect.
L02T 1 year ago
@L02T I tell you again, there is a limit. Geniuses can work out of air, but Lang Lang has to work out of a prewritten piece. It seems people don't understand that with discipline to practice an hour or thirty minutes a day one can obtain such skill at playing, but virtuosity requires bonding with music. I wouldn't call Mozart a genius because of how well he could play, I would call him a genius for the beautiful works he made.
Shade0591 1 year ago
@Shade0591 of course there's degrees of geniuses. But if really, 1 hour a day, you can obtain such skill and precision, and care taken to each and every note you play, I'd immediately brand you a genius, whether you wrote it or not. At least I'd never have enough intelligence to surmount that. Playing music, at his level and even below his, takes a lot of mental strength and maturity that no ordinary folk can achieve. It's not just about finger theatrics and hitting the right notes. It's genius.
L02T 1 year ago
@L02T When you practice an instrument, you're doing it wrong if you're not focusing on the piece. Practice has mental and physical exercise built into it. It's simply that people are too lazy to find out for themselves what they can do with application of their time and resources.
Shade0591 1 year ago 2
@L02T Well I believe it's how deep you want to go with the music and how aware you are with the many things there are. I've seen these "ordinary folks" surpassing all my imaginations and then I can't even think where they will be if they keep it that way. But I think 1 part of the genius is the dedication and joy of doing what you like. People that really love what they are doing can achieve amazing things. Also I think horowitz played with his best quality when he was old.
Aul1kki 1 year ago
@Shade0591 so is Charles Rosen not a genius for his incredibly astute performance of Mozart's Turkish March for instance, or Ashkenazy for his sublime version of Rachmaninov's 18th variation? These and many more are people who have not composed themselves but their skills as virtuosos are unmatched in the western world. Why do you deny them the value of being considered genius simply because they have not produced a work that fits into the western art music canon?
djblackadder 1 year ago
@djblackadder why don't we just ignore those idiots and assh0les and enjoy the music? who cares what those miserable clowns say anyway. come on, those guys do not even have the fundamental dignity of being a humanbeing and thus should be just simply ignored.

@djblackadder I can't agree with you more.. You know, people here in the states all around me go, "Of course [insert pianist name] is chinese.." and all I do is get pissed off. I won't say that there aren't a lot of chinese pianist, but that's simply because there are 1,331,460,000 chinese to the 307,006,550 people in the us. No shit there are going to be more good pianists coming from china then the US.. there are more than 4 times the people in china than the US. >.>;
EdmondDantesLeComte 11 months ago
@EdmondDantesLeComte Sorry, but your statistics are complete nonsense. Do you know why? You have to compare the actual number of kids who are brought up in their households playing the piano. I can almost guarantee you there are more kids in the US growing up with a piano than kids in China growing up with a piano in the household.
trtnec 7 months ago
@trtnec What I said wasn't in any way nonsense, as the statistics are completely accurate as of 2009. Now I hadn't thought of the statistics of "pianos to children" ratios between the two countries.. I can't say in any way shape or form what those statistics are either and I think you raise a valid point. My real intention by my comment was to try to voice my opposition to the stereotype that asians are better at the piano simply because they're asian, but that seems to have backfired.
EdmondDantesLeComte 7 months ago
@EdmondDantesLeComte I didn't say those stats weren't accurate, I just pointed out that application of those stats to your hypothesis of "more Chinese therefore more Chinese pianists than American pianists" doesn't work. A better way to compare would be to take the percentage that take piano seriously in each country divided by total pro pianists. I agree there's nothing intrinsically superior about Asians and piano, but I'd say the ones that have access to a piano take it more seriously by far.

I don't get all the Lang Lang hatred around here, what's wrong with showmanship and a little arrogance? You think rock stars are any better? Didn't think so. And come on, the guy is still in his twenties for goodness sake.
hd26R601 2 years ago 6
Yea I agree rock stars aren't any better. But remember that in a style of music, there is both the sound and the whole background.
Rockstars are arrogant and showmen ? That's why people like them ! 'cause that's the "soul" of rock, that's the background which fits the music.
Classical music is more like... humble, adult...
And I think that's why some people dislike Lang Lang. So to like or to dislike him ? I think that's just because of different (and mb both valuable) perceptions of music.
DefTools 2 years ago 3
There's plenty wrong with showmanship and arrogance. But the real problem with this man is the PRETENSE. He is a rather successful masquerader, but he is not a great pianist or anything close. Just my opinion.

DFDalton1962 2 years ago
Why are you so confident and arrogant in your opinion? He has studied piano and music for his entire lifetime and achieved international recognition. Do you even have a performer's designation for any instrument? Be a little more humble and treat his interpretations as learning experiences for yourself, rather than labeling him as "undeserving of his praise", when you probably don't even have as vast an understanding of counterpoint, keyboard harmony, or music history as him.

zamba00mamba 2 years ago
Totally agree, and there are many rational reasons to say it.
EdiEllerymissing 2 years ago
His face is his own little philosophy on how to put expression while performing. No, it is not to show off. And no, if he exaggerates his facial expression, that does not automatically imply he cannot play the piano. And no, just because his manners are not traditionally classical, it does not mean he cannot play classical music.
This is what the majority of retarded comments on Lang Lang videos talk about. Sometimes I wonder if the commenter had sound turned on when they commented.
