  • He is so brilliant because he listens and treats his guitar like it's a person. Where as alot of players will just treat it like its some wood.

  • Man, that sound!!!!!

i need to get a towel....

  • @MrACDC1997 yo man.. guess what ive bought a standard squier strat red n white

  • Don't touch it! Don't even look at it! It can't be played!

  • "if you feel so inclined.."

  • Back when I started playing, i really didn't want a strat!

I thought they were ugly and regular, and now i've been playing for quiet a while i really want one of these!

  • @MrACDC1997 ive got to say i thought the same exacly like u.. i thought they were that kind of electric guitar that everyone has but now i too want one more than anything else..

how long have u been playing guitar?

  • @nextpage10 I've been playing for about two years, consider myself to be pretty good, for how long i've been playing.

    Whats for you?

  • @MrACDC1997 ive been playing for 8 months but i can already take sultans of swing from the beggining to the end.. but im really looking forward to get my strat.. :P

  • @nextpage10 get a JV strat

  • @shizzlepamizzle what is a jv strat?

  • @nextpage10 nevermind i already know what it is

  • If Mark was this amazed over a standard tremolo, I wonder how his reaction to the Floyd Rose was like? Haha.

Great video, always great to hear this legend speak.

  • i had one like that and it literally did fly through space for a short distance of course and amazingly it even changed shape merely by colliding with a wall.. yeh memories. oh well bye

  • Comment removed

  • boy they hated it..... but we dont.....

  • Kind of an unassuming, but yet interesting, guy.

  • please, throw away the pick.

  • No offense Mark, but fuck you just arent the same when playing with a pick... its like his whole playing style changes completely.

  • Funny, that's the way I've always felt about the body of the Stratocaster, too. Les Pauls are really sweet, but I dunno....something about a Strat. Great video. Thanks for posting.

  • I got a red strat I was inspired by David gilmour( pink Floyd) and I love it!! The wammy bar is cool and all but it puts my guitar so out of tune

  • Re: Mark's comment about the older generation hating the tremelo bar...

Leo Fender designed the tremelo bar to allow a conventional guitarist to imitate Hawaiian slack-key players and steel guitar players, and in the right hands - like Mark's - it can. I'm sure Mark heard guys like Chet Atkins doing just that, when he was a lad. It breaks my heart that Mark broke up Dire Straits... still not over it... Mark, you reading this? PLEASE put the band back together!

  • you can really feel that he loves his guitars. surely a reason why he is such a good player. :)

  • He speaks very well. Seems like a guy who just loves guitar.

  • "Boy, they really hated it. But we don't." What a great guy

  • a strat flying through space at 1:06

    soo stue...so true...

  • for mark playing guitar is as easy as anyone eating banana.....wow great guy

  • You english-speaking people are very lucky!

I'll give everything for understand Mark talking about guitars or his style of playing!

  • @xalex1200 What is your native language? Perhaps I can find you a translation.

  • @xalex1200 You can still learn. Read something first in your native language and do it again in English. You can also watch TV in English language and English subtitles. It helped me and I understand him. Just keep practicing.

  • It's cool to see the joy in his face when he played the little riffs even after all those years of playing.

  • What does the interviewer say at 2:50? Cause they felt it was...?

  • @109296 ...contrived.

  • Comment removed

  • I share the same Birthday as Mark

    Fuck ya

  • Even without playing a note, he makes sound out of the Fender

  • i used to go down to the woodwork room just to see them doing it. they where older boys.

  • So Mark Knopler likes floating bridges

  • @PIlotrcm Haven't you seen his Suhr Signature? :)

  • It's so cool to see him still be so fascinated by something he's been doing for decades

  • I WANT THAT FENDER HES GOT

  • Stratocaster: Proof that functionality and efficiency doesn't mean you have to sacrifice beauty and style

  • @VBSouthpaw I have a 65 Strat with a great tone but I find all Strats ugly as hell! Give me a Les Paul any day which is much more like a violin in shape and more like the form of a beautiful woman.....Strats look some American women; battle ship hips!

  • @turockandar agree totally! I do love strat sounds but man les pauls are nice looking. it's a pity they cost more than a bloody mansion

  • this is what a REAL rocks star looks and sounds like!

  • I'm a 100% heterosexual guy but when he said "sexy" @1:40 it moved a little bit.

  • the neck looks insane big :O

  • is that a fender american deluxe or standard or special...???

  • @pipiapenkak its an original 50s fender

  • Did anyone notice he's using a pick and not his fingers?

  • Comment removed

  • @swistone he is better with his fingers than with the pick..

  • @swistone he's always using a pick on this one,as he said it has thick strings

  • i love the way he's so absorbed in playing, awseome guitarist.

  • Look at the Gretsch 6120 Nashville in the back, what a beauty

  • fukin bluman true up yours

  • sorry for this mark but youre a complete waste of fukin rolls royce

  • Dammit I can't see any of his collections or the '54 Strat very well!! (There is jizz all over the screen)

  • yep- lovely guy-modest and so so good-

  • he makes really really simple notes sound awesome.

  • Yup...as great a guy as he is talented.

  • what a great down to eart guy.

  • Best guitarplayer ever :) hoping he's coming soon to Holland again :)

  • That '54 Strat is worth more than a lot of people's cars - and some people's houses! Got a '68, but it's just a little brother to this one (but a SWEET little brother, I might add!).

  • Fender.

  • anyone know the amp in the background?

  • @miller434 looks like an old vibrolux, but i could be wrong =/

  • @miller434 I think it's a Vibrolux, but it's also possible to be a Vibroverb. MK owns both of them.

  • A true set of gifts to this world. Leo Fender and Knopfler.

  • damn sexy!!!

    (i'm talking bout the guitar!)

  • Wow that fender seems long, when i take it in hands it seems like a toy. It's weird feeling when you play guitar after bass guitar

  • This guy has the best guitars in the world, some were built only for him but when he plays on this 54 Strat, he looks like a young boy !

  • 1954 - The first year of the Strat.

  • @mwolco1

Yup. It's a beauty alright. It's in very nice condition as well.

Fretted Americana have one just like that, around that condition, for $75k. To be frank, if I had the money, I would! I'd live in a box if that meant I could own a real '54 :P

  • @Ibanez2570P Your so lucky, I'd have gave anything to have seen those two

  • sculpture beauty !!!

  • awesome guy awesome guitarist awesome singer songwriter class !!!!

  • i shoulda learned

    the play on thata geetar

  • this is pretty sweet. is he using a PICK?

  • @buster52 sometimes yes

  • Great guitar player and great musicman..............very good

  • legend!!!!

  • No other guitarist has inpired me more. As a singer/songwriter I find myself searching for an inspirational moment. mark is a great human...

  • "Knopfler I might have known you would be involved in this rock and roll boy." haha

  • the sound of that strat is just amazing!

  • You can tell that he really LOVE his guitars with all his heart. And god hi is making great music. Hoping for another europe tour

  • Awesome, I love anything with Knopfler in it! I love hearing him just talk informally like this

  • @srvfan454

    me too

  • @srvfan454 He's so down-to-earth and seemingly humble.

  • Ahh..fkn brilliant,thanx for posting this.

  • NO EGO INVOLVED JUST LIKE wungabunga MENTIONED JUST LOVES THE MUSIC

  • I don't particularly like his music but as a guitarist I think he's one of the best. Never out to show off, just to enjoy the sound. And he can really play when he wants to.

  • This is the man that changed the way i was thinking, the sultans of swing was a great feed for me to start the guitar!!! He's a great character although his glory :)

    Lov u Mark.-

  • for me too :)

  • look....he was feeling it at 3:30 - 3:35 ....i sensed a strong solo commin out....but then the interviewer interrupted the moment :<

  • the intro solo of money for nothing live at the royal albert hall made me start playing the guitar! for me he's got the best tone. with strat or paula

  • In a way, he reminds me of my grandpa :)

  • Awesome guitar player, really modest and down to earth guy!

  • "That could be something flying through space" hahaha Love it!

  • "Course in doing that they have created this pretty sexy shape." HAHA. Mark you are just classic. I have never seen this before. He's just so cute and funny. Don't care that he's getting up there in age. He's still cute.

  • thank you captain obvious.

  • Try a little Albert Lee, even Clapton's envious of his playing .

  • What a great guy and what a awesome guitar player !!

  • kago en el ingles de la virjen traducir esto koonee ya kon la poyaa

  • phrasing and picking , he is the best

    nuff said

  • Living Legend! No one like him. I love how he makes us feel what he's playing by feeling it so much himself. He truly is a guitar great !

  • For those who've never played an early Fender, you really have to touch one to experience how great and true they sound. It's a lot like when someone shows you the difference between digital and analogue playback, there is a kind of warmth and clarity that is lost in digital. Also their out of phase single coil sound is instantly recognisable ie. sultans of swing/sweet home alabama etc.

  • my dads friend own a 58 fender strat hardtail witch they only made 1000 hardtails. it sounds as if you're floating through air, worth 25000 he bought it for

600 brand new barley faded its a dream

  • David Gilmour the best

  • there is no best guitar player.

  • no matter,he is a genie

  • I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that Mark Knopfler isn't a good guitar player. He is wonderful, an absolutely great guitarist. Although I just don't think you can say he is the best. Music isn't like sports, you can be the best on the 100m. sprint for example. not the best in music. music is about expression and feeling.

  • That's a very intelligent point. I'll take that.

  • No, but once a generation or so, you get a handful of innovators. Mark was one of them. It is fair, I think, to say that there are not many that play to Mark's standard. He, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Hendrix, Clapton, Michael Hedges, there are a few of them, but not many when you consider the thousands and thousands of good guitarists. These guys really gave back with new techniques and sounds that we simply didn't hear before they arrived. And they do it with such ease and beauty.

  • @PaleHearse: I've played for years, and there are many, many guitarists who play to a very high standard... unbelieveably talented people. There are far-fewer, however, at that std. who have an original "voice" - something new or unique to say on the instrument. If I had it to do over again, I'd learn to write songs, arrange, and and also sing. Playing guitar isn't enough, most music fans want vocals. Only the guitarheads care just about guitars, hot licks and so on.

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 you are entirely right-- there are a lot of great guitar players, i know a few myself...but the legends sing and play and write great songs-- bb king, knopfler, hendrix, and on and on...learning the crafts of writing and singing greatly increases your chance of reaching an audience..

  • @soyghost1: Writing and singing help, no question - but another reason Mark stands out is that his sound is readily identifiable. When a Dire Straits tune or one of his solo numbers comes on, you know in an instant that it is him. The same is true of all the greats - they somehow managed to find a style of their own that people could recognize and appreciate. All of them had influences, true, but they made their mark somehow.

  • I love how he says "pretty sexy shape" xD

  • what a sound!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark Knopfler is a LEGEND, true talent.

  • hes useing a pick.... wtf lol

  • he sometimes uses picks to play rhythem parts in recordings

  • this are not al his guitar i got a video that was made in 2001 one where you can see almost al his guitars also the steinberge that he was playing on the song one world from the brothers in arms zd its the last song on the zd

  • upload it

  • its here on youtube its a interview from holland;-)

  • what kind of foot switch do you use

  • what you mean?

  • 1st time i see him play with a pick.. i know he plays with it to make rhythm guitar on records, but had never saw him play with a pick on a video..

  • is that the guitar in the background on the BIA album the infamous metal guitar it sure looks like it but looks plastic?

    hmmm

  • Not sure it it's exactly the same. But the same type for sure.

  • It's a National Style O. The one on the BIA album cover is/was Mark's own guitar that he wrote about on Communique

  • Yes it is the same guitar

  • This guy is just so awesome

  • mark knopfler with a plectrum?!!! thats new

  • Jurassic Strat =)

  • omg what is that chord he plays at about 2.42? it looks like the top half of a G ? pls tell me someone :)

  • its just a G

  • it is a G.... he's got the bass note with his thumb and forming the rest of it like a bar chord

  • that's a '57 strat

  • At the end, did he play The Shadows - Atlantis? I'm proud of myself that I found that out :)

  • this for some reason makes me think of that scene in spinal tap with nigel and his guitars, especially at 1:05

  • Haha your right.. "Listen to the sustain!.. " "im not hearing anything" "you would if it would be played"

  • At 3:30 Mark is begining to melt into the depths of his musical mind and gets interupted by the question.

  • mark knopfler is the best ever, I even like it when he is talkink xD

  • what amp does he use?

  • Un hombre a una guitarra pegado

  • Man, once he started playing he forgot all about everything, look at that facial expression. He is a true legend.

  • "this is something that could fly through space" :)

  • Mark playing totally solo, even just song fragments, I'm in heaven at the feet of the master...

  • this guy is a genius!!

  • This guy is soooooooooooooo damn unique

  • One of the best guitar players ever. period.

During the initial 2 mins. he is sounding strangely similar to Nigel Tufnel ;)

I am wondering if he did it intentionally or do rock stars really talk like that?

  • Mark = God!

  • Nice Guitar collection. Mark is legend

  • one of my influences

  • Legend

  • Piacevole, rilassante, perfetto... Grazie Mark, grazie di cuore.

  • de dondé sacaste este reportaje?
