I spent the 80s doing what many twentysomething singles of today think of as unthinkable; I had two-tone big hair and Don Johnson threads, even a touch of black eyeliner. Drove to my friends house on a Friday night, snorted meth and hit the college town's Nightclub Scene. I met and got more women than I recall, even a few I slowly moved in with. We still went out but as couples, still danced all night. I was in a band too. Point is, there are "nice girls" in bars but that route's stigmatized.

I just got home from seeing Todd in concert in Boston. He's doing the Utopia Tour again . amazing kick ass concert ! This guy is a musical genus . do NOT miss him. He's on tour NOW
When this song came out, I was 13 and wondering when or if I would ever get me a woman. It maybe part of the reason I love this song. It would soon become a mantra for me and my buds. We gotta get us some women!
Great song. I'm in shock to find out that none of Todd's albums ever reached higher than 29. Either he wasn't promoted properly or the world went into a coma.
@WHA73 Which company, and which MOS? I was there from mid May through mid September of '70. Truck driving, supply, and radio school. Did you make it to Nam? The humidity and heat were terrible, but not as bad as Nam!
@WHA73 Most people don't know this, but Nam used to have a problem with pit bulls, until the RATS killed them! Ha! Ha! Now the rats are gone. The four-inch flying cockroaches ate THEM! SOOO glad, with ALL of our problems, to be HOME!!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Look alive, soldier! We got another door gunner onboard! Check out tschuckman, he was over in Nam "doing the dance" before either of us (I was there in 69-70). Rise & shine, everyone make sure they're ready to rock n' roll, anyone got extra shotgun shells? Maybe the 3 of us can save the world, eh?
Have a good day gentleman, I salute you, my brothers!
@tschuckman ~ You need to touch base with sixtiesrockboy. Rick was also a door gunner while I rode with the Black Horse and was the lucky one ~ I got to jump out of 'em while you guys stayed back. I asked Rick if he ever actually pointed his 60 at anything in particular? :) Rick lives in Arizona, I'm in Colorado. Were you drafted? I know we all did our best but it was hard. Nice hearing from you.
I spent a few months in CuChi, RVN in 1968 with the 20th Trans Co.- helicopters at age 19 and they were scary ass times as I was new. I did 2 tours and ended up in a great AHC chopper company in BearCat-- door gunner. I write a Christian Blog now in WI.. tschuckman@aol.com Tom S

@sixtiesrockboy ~ I'm fine, thanks. Sometimes all the talk about The Nam kinda gets me down a bit. I lost two really close friends at Cu Chi in a nasty fire fight. It wasn't the dying that got to me, it was the way everyone died ~ so quickly, so violently ~ and all without any real purpose. I remember watching on television when we finally ran out of South Vietnam ~ U.S. helicopters picking up a few people from the top of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon ~ made all those deaths meaningless.......
sixtiesrockboy ~ An you wanna know what kind of trade school? Airline Schools of the Pacific on 17th Street in Santa Ana. Was just looking a quicker way home ~ ended up spending a quarter century in the business because of that decision, not even counting the fact that 2 of my kids went into one side, or another, of the commercial airline industry as a result of their growing up (and flying alot!) with "pop" in the business. Rick, you just never know.............
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I figured it was your left hand. Yes, the Mekong Delta, or as we called "water world." Cu Chi and, as it turned out, all those freakin' tunnels. When you road with the Black Horse you could, and would, end up anywhere and at anytime. I probably covered as much ground as you did and the worst part was NEVER knowing (really) what you jumping into when you left mama Huey. I even stopped trying to make friends. Yep: 2/5/69 and with a 90 day early for a trade school, 11/6/70.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Only qualified "Sharpshooter" with the M-14 & M-16 BUT I did pull off an "Expert" with the Colt .45 ~ 2nd high in the company (361/400) ~ my dad was an old Kentucky boy so I kinda grew up around handguns. Being a leftie ~ the "60" (on a bipod) was a bitch, got in on some .50 action but not alot. We got hooked up with the 25th Division for a little while ~ MAN! Were you ever around an M51 (Quad 50) on wheels? That was some BAD shit, that thing would rock that truck!
@MrRonnieG Yeah, I think we had basically the same weaponry on our gun truck, when I was with the 572nd "Gypsy Bandits" transportation company during the invasion of Laos in early 1971. We were in Quang Tri, very close to the DMZ! We got hit with rockets, etc. Some of our people were sent to Khe Sanh to do perimeter security. One night, about 150 V.C. sappers tried to come through. I don't think they understood the consequences, or it was a little kamikaze-like. They were cut to pieces!

@MrRonnieG The parallels never end! Ha Ha I'm a complete southpaw. That's good, because my right shoulder and arm injuries are so severe, that I have to shake hands with my right hand! The 25th, huh? So, I'm guessing that for at least a little while, you were in the Mekong, because I remember that they were at Cu Chi for at least awhile.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Just got up. Not alot of snow here but it does get cold. Last winter's low (and, I admit, it was a wind chill) was -22 but I walked to the liquor store & back (14 blocks) with only shorts on. Did not wear pants last winter and when the locals commented ~ I told 'em I was from L.A. where the REALLY hardy guys come from! (HA!) Ord was a bitch and that's no lie. March around 6 inches of standing water? We walked THRU it. Wish I'd knew about the I.G. in those days, eh?
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I'm good to go, ha, if I had somewhere to go. I ran into a bunch of guys in Nam who took basic at "Tigerland" which was Ft. Polk, LA. They'd always talk like is was the worst place, short of hell, to take basic but I NEVER talked to a Polk guy who I honestly thought had it worse than my old D-4-1 at Ord. They beat the crap out of us up there and by the time I got to MP/A.I.T. @ Gordon it seemed like 2 months vacationing on Maui.
@MrRonnieG I called Polk hot coral hell, because of the humidity and coral snakes. Terrible place, but hard to imagine that it could be worse than what we suffered at Ord! It might as well have been G.B. at Benning! Only guys like you can know how thrilled I was to escape Ord!?
@sixtiesrockboy I know about Bragg, but I wonder what they do nowadays at Benning. I know they do officer training, because they wanted me to become an E-5, and then they were going to make me a gold bar, and send me for officer training at Benning. Then, back to my Guard unit in Richmond, Ca. I don't know if they do any G.B. training there anymore, but they used to. What's up with you today? Just hanging, and waiting for whatever snow you guys get in winter and late fall?
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Hey Rick, when you were up @ Ord with D-4-3 were you guys dealing with Phase III Meningitis Control like we did when I was there from 2/5/69 until 4/12/69?? We couldn't leave the company area unless we were in platoon or company formation and at night we had to use our tent poles and tie them to a corner post of the upper bunk and run the tent from the top of the tent poles as a "sneeze sheet." It was Feb/Mar/Apr ~ rain everyday, every had a cold w/same symptoms as Meningitis
@MrRonnieG Yeah, same here. We lost two dead to meningitis, and three critical! They had to cut ALL of them loose, because their meningitis was so severe, that all suffered neurological deficits, hearing loss, permanent sight loss, or all three. I myself missed boot camp graduation on 4-10-70, with a 104 degree fever, and symptoms of bronchitis AND meningitis! I was in Ord Hospital for five days and nights, and sick as a dog! Really messed up cycle! You doing any better? Hope so!
@MrRonnieG Just noticed that you went in exactly one year to the day before me! I went in on 2-5-70. As Casey Stengel would say, "Things is gettin' curioser and curioser"!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Just finished an hour's visit from the VA Rep (Mary), we discussed taking the VA Housing Voucher somewhere else and that isn't gonna happen. She has tried to convince me to go for somekind of VA benefit but I've told her, more than once, I'm just not interested in sharing that part of my soul with the VA ~ which, she says, is what it would take. There are nights I awake with terrible memories but I keep 'em to myself cause that's my call. It's o.k. ~ nobody ever owed me.
@MrRonnieG Everyone deals with it in different ways. Got my retro yesterday! Piss poor when I do a better job of defending my interests than the D.A.V.! I'm sure you'll figure a way to set yourself up favorably! Take care.
@sixtiesrockboy (Rick...) It's a cool 66 degree day here in Pueblo, listening to the Marshall Tucker Band (Heard it in a Love Song). I live in a 16 unit apt building that has 5 other vets but none of 'em are Nam guys. We got an Okinawa guy, Germany, Desert Storm and some guys straight up CONUS/USA so it's really not possible to share much with them. I don't make much of being a Nam/combat vet cause there's no point. My VA rep (Mary Hobbs) hasn't a clue about what I went thru, you know?
@MrRonnieG All too familiar! The only people who know my status, are my family, friends, and those, (usually professionals) with legit. ntk! It's not practical to tell NO one, because then they wonder why you sometimes have slight tremors, are irritable, or jump at the slightest noise! If it were'nt so debilitating, it would be funny, because it reminds me of that episode of Get Smart! that co-starred the character actor Percy Helton. It was called Whispering Smith. He hated noise. Member? Funny
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Been on the phone for 4 1/2 hours with a bud who lives in Vegas. First name is Ron/Ronnie, middle name is Gene. Most friends/family call me Ronnie but Ron is fine too. It's 1AM here in Pueblo, listening to the Doobie Brothers ~ takes me back to around '73, was living down in Huntington Beach. It's kinda funny how we've taken over this Todd Rundgren page. After 2 failed marriages it's hard for me to believe in the institution any longer.
@MrRonnieG I would'nt worry about that! We need a support system as much as anyone else, and I have NO problem with that, if you don't! We have a lot in common, and many vets have no one to talk with, because people who have'nt "been there, done that", can't relate! You may have noticed that there is very little activity on this page anyway. Love the D.B.'s, especially What A Fool Believes If anything, I think that our back-and-forth is entertaining to people with no real lives, don't you?.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ More importantly, they are all really terrific human beings. The middle daughter (Jessica) teaches journalism at a community college in Kent, Wa. Their mom was a terrific lady though we parted ways, up in Lewiston, Idaho ~ a long time ago. Sometimes life goes like that; you don't realize what you had until long after you've moved on. I've made my mistakes but known many fine people. My only grand daughter (3 yr) was named "Ronnie Jean" after me!!! (my name is Ronnie Gene).
@MrRonnieG Is Gene your last name, or first and middle? I'm Rick. They called me Rollin' Rick in Nam while I was still driving deuce-and-a-halves and five-ton tractor trailers. When I realized after my girlfriend murdered my baby in 1974, (abortion) that I would NEVER have ANY reproductive rights, and that if I did marry, and it did'nt work, that I would'nt have any rights in divorce court EITHER, I decided to never marry! Only when men rebel en masse, will these things ever end! The fix is IN!.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ So two of my three kids are "chips off the old block." My oldest (Shelby) tells me they heard so many airline stories they HAD to get into some part of the commercial airline industry. During my quarter century in the business I logged over 1,800,000 nautical miles ~ 34 countries and 50 states. That includes 400,000 nautical miles in Boeing 747 jumpseats. I always wanted the flight attendant to come out of the cockpit asking, "can anyone here fly a 747?" I WOULD have gone!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ We're now up to 72 with blue skies. Pueblo is @ 4,700 feet (not quite your 7,000) and is considered high plains here in S.E. Colorado. We're 95 miles north of New Mexico & 120 west of Kansas. Married twice; '73-'79 and '86-'95, 3 daughters from the 1st; 2 live in Seattle, 1 in San Diego. The San Diego daughter has flown with America for 11 years, lost a roomie in 9/11. Her husband is a 1st Officer for AA on their Boeing 757's. Oldest in "media relations" for Boeing.
@MrRonnieG You and your wife must have done a wonderful job! You must be super proud of having children who have attained dizzying heights of professional success! Hope goodwill prevails in your family! That has'nt always been the case with MINE! Guess it's the Sicilian in us! Some of us tend to have a little too much pride, and are a little too stubborn for our own good! You know!?
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Got the T.V. planted on ESPN and the NHRA Indy Nationals drag racing event! I grew up at Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Fontana and Pomona ~ lived drag racing in the 60's and was partners in a B/MP in '68 ('59 Plymouth body with a '57 392 Chrysler hemi/dual quads/Isky 505 roller cam/Art Carr 7,000 RPM stall speed torque converter, etc, etc.) Weather has really cooled here in S.E. Colorado ~ only 63 degrees at the moment! How about Flag?
@MrRonnieG Hey!: Mostly lows in the mid-40's, with scattered T.S.'s. Contrasted with a couple of months ago, when our LOWS were in the mid-60's! Fall is DEFINITELY in the air! Looking forward to the snow! I'm jealous of guys like you! I'm a fabulous driver, but mechanically, I'm NOWHERE! Would try to start the MUFFLER if I could! Ha! Ha! I'm going to have to buy a brand new car, or slip a C-Note to a qualified motor-head, so I don't get taken! I never married. Just close calls! How bout you?
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I too have always shared a measure of guilt over the death of my friend who volunteered to take my place that faithful night in January 1977. JAL preferred to have single men on those trips (odd, I know, but they always had a different slant on things) so I made at least a half dozen flights (my job was to walk out of the cockpit and observe the 42 head of live cattle AND serve the V.P. his meal). My replacement that night was 32 years old and had 3 children.
@MrRonnieG Such is life! I'm glad you have overcome your earlier problems, and trust that you are doing MUCH better! Hope that man's children received help and guidance, and prospered!
@MrRonnieG What are you doing for Labor Day? Jeannette and I are'nt doing much. Pastrami sandwiches, macaroni salad, and a couple of DVD'S. Just kicking back, and chilling.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ The NTSB actually argued, a bit, over the final "probable cause." The Cessina had been assigned a heading of 070 but turned right to 090. However that was not a breech of ATC. The planes flew into eachother @ flight level 026 (2,600 ft), no mention the Cessna was high. PSA impacted the ground at a high-speed nose-down attitude and in a 50 degree bank to the right. The impact was so severe it was recorded on a seismograph at CalTech.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Actually there were a couple of "last words" that came from the cockpit of PSA 182. There were 4 in the cockpit including another PSA Captain riding in the jumpseat. The most amazing words, and it could not be determined which pilot said it was, "Ma, I love you." It was two guys in the Cessna (one a Marine Sgt.) and both had a license but the guy in the left seat was was making approaches qualifying for an instrument rating and had a HOOD on (can't see out the window).
@MrRonnieG High drama, worthy of Alfred Hitchcock, etc. Like I said, I'm sad, but I don't feel GUILTY! I know that I played a large role here, because, if I had been sick, etc., at least SOME of them would STILL be alive! But hindsight is 20\20, and I had to make a living! As Clint said in The Outlaw Josey Wales, "Boy, dyin' ain't much of a livin!" I'm STILL haunted (not the same as guilty), but I push on, and try to make them proud!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I still have a copy of the NTSB report. In addition to the 7 crew members that were working PSA 182, there were THIRTY other PSA employees who died in the crash ~ all headed for company training in San Diego. Cause of the accident was PSA 182's flight crew's failure to keep "visual separation" with the Cessna 172 which was flying a parallel heading of 090 magnetic.
Only reason I know is because, for more than a quarter century, I studied every NTSB (National Transportation Safey Board) investion & probable cause report ever published ~ a hobby, of sorts. 182 was on final to Lindbergh and had been cleared to land.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I very well remember the PSA crash (it was PSA flight #182/B727 on 26 Sept 78). I worked in the airline industry for more than 20 years (was a outside sales representative for PSA in the early 80's, covered San Bernardino to the Nevada border) and made that trip (to San Diego/Lindbergh Field) a few times myself, for company training. A student pilot in a Cessna flew into 182's right wing aileron (control surface). Capt.'s last words ,"we're going down, PSA."
@MrRonnieG Now it's coming back, even though it's been 33 years! The father was at the controls, and I think the daughter was a student pilot. I think the Cessna 172 was outside it's air space, and was also higher than it should have been on approach. Is that correct? At least the news reports that I saw and heard at the time seemed to blame the 172 pilot.I believe, without being gross, that the very LAST words uttered by 182's pilot were "Oh, shit!" I see their faces, but don't feel guilty!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Hadn't thought of that crash in years, decided to Google under "January 1977 Anchorage Newspaper" and FOUND a bit about it. The date was 13 January (it's about halfway down the page under 13-Jan-1977-Aviation Safety Network). It lists 5 dead which was as I stated, the crew, V.P. and my spot. It lists the flight from ANC but that only fuel & crew change. It lists TYO as the dest. but that was just for clearing customs, final dest. Nagoya. Cause of accident ~ pilot drunk!

@sixtiesrockboy ~ Pt#2: On the day I was rolling with out with 'em (flt left at 00:10) I came down with a bladder/kidney infection (104.9 temp) and had to call in that I could not go. A buddy of mine (at LAX) volunteered (he was married). Next day I come in and everyone looks like they lost their mother. Turns out JL flt #033, taking off from ANC, crashed and EVERYONE was killed. 34 years later and I've never gotten over that.
@MrRonnieG Some of our experiences are almost SCARY parallel! Do you remember the Americana Hotel in Culver City, that later became the Pacifica Hotel? It was the contracted hotel for PSA Airline's flight personnel. I drove the van that picked up and dropped off the flight attendants at LAX. Do you remember the terrible PSA crash in San Diego in 1978? I dropped SIX of the flight attendants that were killed in that disaster (NO survivors!) off one hour before that airliner went down! Haunts me!
sixtiesrockboy ~ Check this out, true story. It was Jan 1977 and I was working for Japan Air Lines at LAX. We were running LIVE cattle charters from L.A. to Moses Lake, Wa. (were we picked up the cattle) and then Anchorage ~ Tokyo ~ Nagoya w/DC8F A/C); 3 cockpit crew (Captain, 1st Officer/Copilot and 2nd Officer/Flt Eng. and in the 2 jumpseats were occpied by the shipping company's V.P. and one of us (they called us "attendants" on these flts). I went often because I love to fly. (CON'T)
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Spent 6 months in Eugene (Jan-Jul) last year and 2 months in Grants Pass (alot of homeless shelter time in both). When I was up in Washington in 2009 I got interviewed by a "head" doctor to see if they'd give me $339 a month assistance (which, for a little while, they did). She asked me one of the classic questions of my adult life; "Ron, how many people do you think you killed in Vietnam?" I looked her and said, "give me a sec, I'll have to count 'em." Geeeez.
@MrRonnieG Super weird! It seems that you simply CAN'T get hired in V.A. inpatient OR outpatient psychology and psychiatry, unless you secretly or openly hate and despise veterans, or you're stone CRAZY, or BOTH! AMAZING! They make blithe, trite, inane, banal, and insipid remarks, like "irrational fear of death, without basis in reality", etc.! A fucking rocket with 110 lbs. of H.E. in it landed about 30 yards from me in the EXACT spot I had been standing in! One of about a dozen examples! Real!
@sixtiesrockboy Americans need to grow some testicles and ovaries, and start DEFENDING veterans! A pension granted to a veteran, but TOTALLY based on evil lies and assertions by unnamed and faceless ASSHOLES, is almost as bad as NO pension! Veterans don't even have the right to know the names and positions of the "professionals" making these statements, to be given concrete and logical examples of why these bullshit diagnoses were made, or to face and challenge those who dream these fantasies!
@MrRonnieG You have to wonder when they tag you with all these bullshit lies, and unfairly label you mentally, if they are'nt allowed to say so, but they actually believe you, and have some idea of what you've been through. It's possible that they don't believe what they write, (in which case the asses should tell you confidentially) but they know the way the Veterans Administration operates, and that it's secretly anti-veteran, and that they might be trying to enhance your chances with lies!
@MrRonnieG Most laughable of all, is suicidal ideation, narcissism, or borderline hygiene! I know that some vets, (as well as many other non-vets) have problems in these areas, but I sure as hell DON'T! What part of I don't believe in suicide, and I would'nt give my enemies the satisfaction, did'nt they understand!? Narcissists don't nurse their female friend free-of-charge for SIX straight years after her bus accident! Borderline hygiene might be the worst lie! I wear suits, and I'm SUPER clean
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Thanks for the advise, will think about it. Will never forget Ord and D-4-1 ("every man a killer"). Vietnam was going down like the shits and we were dragging around those 300 pound 7.62 M-14's. Didn't pick up an M-16 until I got to Gordon. Got to Nam and lived with my 870 12 gauge, close in, I didn't think there was ANYTHING better. Have a good day................
@MrRonnieG Good ole Remington! I trained on the m-16 and m-14 sniper rifle at Ord. At Gordon, it was the .45, .38, and M-79, as well as the blather about how much fun it would be to hurt people! Really (with many other things) turned me into an FTA guy! I have a Mossberg 12 570 today for home defense and hunting, but with my time basically monopolized by Jeannette, I have'nt been able to use it much. If I could get an elk tag, I could have meat for the winter! New Year's Eve of 2010, it was -30!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ In 2006 was living in Bullhead City, Arizona and just kind of got really depressed and gave up. Lived in a '90 Buick for a couple of years, then lost it up in Wendover, Nevada. The story goes on but I won't bore you with it. I'm doing fine, thanks. Was wondering, where'd you take basic? I was up in Monterey, Ca. at Ft. Ord (D-4-1) 2/5/69-4/12/69 but was LUCKY. The day I got drafted (2/5/69) they were also drafting for the Marines! I knew that would have been bad.
@MrRonnieG Right next door! D-4-3! Lot of parallels. Hit you up later, O.K.? Gotta help my roommate, Jeannette. They demolished Ord. At least that's what I heard. I f you try again, I suggest a vets law attorney with a track record, who won't take more than 25%, and will build his or her fee into the settlement! Go online, and contact guys that know what happened to you, and get signed, dated statements in triplicate before it's too late! Many of us are dying out! I did my own briefs. Good luck!
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Just got online (it's after 11pm/mdt) and picked up your latest post. Congratulations!!!! I'm really happy for you cause I know it brings you some security and peace of mind. I was homeless for 4 years until last year. Was passing thru Pueblo and learned of a VA housing voucher program that was available. Went for it and got my own place! Have lived in 15 states now, spent most of last year in Oregon and 2009 in Washington so I really do understand how important it is.

@MrRonnieG Glad you have a roof over your head! Hope you have a fair amount of privacy. I hopped freight trains around Oregon and Washington in 1969, when I was 18. It was a little dangerous, but you just have to think. Jump on when it's dark, and people don't see you, hide in straw, etc. Also worked in the anti-Vietnam War movie Getting Straight, which was filmed partially in the house I was living in on E. 13th St., in Eugene, Oregon. Got a chance to get to know Candice Bergen & Elliott Gould

@MrRonnieG What REALLY pisses me off, is the way the V.A. and the government pretend to care, but really think that veterans are a collective nuisance! They supposedly changed things about one and a half years ago to make it easier for vets to prove PTSS. But even vets like me, with stunningly detailed information about our combat experiences, clear down to the minutiae, are carefully questioned like they think we're LYING! They themselves never went, or were REMF'S! Hope you get some steady $'s
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I'm there my friend. P.S. I didn't extend in The Nam so I got shipped back stateside in mid-July 1970 and where did I go??? Right back to Ft. Gordon, Georgia and the 140th Military Police Co./3rd Army for the last 4 months. It was worse than Vietnam! I promise to keep in touch...........
@MrRonnieG Hello, my friend!: I feel like a giant financial weight has been lifted from me! I just received my V.A. service-connection case decision and summary in today's (9-1-11) mail, and it was FAVORABLE!!!! 21 months retroactive, and 100% monthly! Fucking A !!! I don't feel like I'm going to live a lot longer, but now, I won't die poor, and unable to afford my own funeral!! I'm a guy trying to live life with one arm, and emotional problems! 40 years, and a thousand tears LATE! How are you?
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I got bad sick on 30 June and made it to the VA hospital in Denver (109 miles north/only a clinic here in Pueblo) and they treated me like a dog who'd been hit by a car. This country talks the talk about Vets but I'm done with 'em. I'm 64 and got 7 months to make Medicare. If I make it, that's good. BUT I'm not going back to the VA. If I gotta die it's gonna be with dignity and on MY terms. I have a feeling you are a fine person who gave far more than was fair.
Ft. Gordon!!!! :) A-11-4 @ the Patrick Brems barricks!!! 4/12/69 - 6/6/69. Was engaged to the love of my life (Kathy). Home for (just) 2 weeks, Kathy wanted to get married but I knew my life, and my love, wasn't worth a single 7.62 round so I said "not now." On 04 August, coming off an S&D, I got a letter that started, "Ronnie, I simply cannot wait for you." If ANYONE knows what it felt like to be in the middle of HELL and have no control, it's you ~ my friend.
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Thank You for your time & service in Vietnam. You know, I've posted ten thousand messages on YouTube and NEVER felt I needed to thank another human being for what they gave up because I've NEVER known another that I thought gave up what I did; part of my heart & soul. But I know you did and I'm glad we've crossed paths because it was really hard, really hard, and you know it. I gave more to my country that ANYONE ever knew but you know what I mean.
@MrRonnieG Back at you! There's really no one to talk to! I'm not much of a drinker, and I don't smoke, so the vet clubs are kind of a wash out! The V.A. is a joke! They continue to hire non-vets, non-combat vets, and non-disabled combat vets as "counselors!" Believe me, these scum are a vets WORST enemies! They pretend that they want to help us with P.T.S.S. treatment and pensions, and then the M.F.'s ask questions designed to "prove" your P.T.S.S. stems from childhood, etc. Lie,deny, hope u die
@sixtiesrockboy ~ Left a post for you. Forgot to "@" so here's a headsup. You know ~ I guess it's possible we actually road together?? I don't know, but what I do know is that we counted on you guys to lay down the shit while we were bailing out. I recently ran into a Nam Vet, here in YouTube, who was also with the 1st Cav and saw action at La Drang Valley in '65. It was OUR proudest moment.
@MrRonnieG FYI, I guess that was a typo! It's Ia Drang Valley! Don't you hate how close the l and i keys are?I don't really know! They grounded me in July of 1971, when I started seeing double, and developed nausea and vertigo. I might be alive NOW because of that! I flew about 24 sorties, so I feel like that was enough action. My crew chief, Gogerty had his entire shin destroyed by a .51 cal about two day after I transferred to the 116th hornets from the 176th sharks, both in Chu Lai.
sixtiesrockboy ~ Funny thing ~ I arrived in Vietnam a 95 Bravo (Military Police!) but after a WEEK with the 218th MP Brigade @ LBJ they got a hot idea to attach 5 of us with the 75th Infantry Rangers. Six weeks later I was the only 95B left and ended up spending the entire Tour of Duty with the 75th as a ground pounder!!!!!!!! Carried a 16, 79, 870 Remington and a model 1911 .45.
I always wanted to ask a doorgunner (but was always too busy!!!!) ~ did you guys ever point those 60's at anything?
@MrRonnieG Only smart ass peter pilots! Ha! Ha! M.P. school at Ft. Gordon, Ga. from April to June of 1970. Also, radio school, supply school, and heavy truck driver school at Ft. Jackson, S.C. The pricks loved sending me to school! I could'nt change a light bulb (ha ha!) and they knew it! But I had basically a photographic memory, and could read, absorb, and remember a book in a few hours, and was basically the only one in my company with ANY college. I mostly tutored people. NO action THERE!
PT #2 ~ Sorry you've struggled since The Nam. I served with the 75th Infantry (3rd Brigade/1st Cav) and saw quite a bit of action myself. It was all a waste of time and human life. Worst thing though was the way the nation treated us when we came home. Don't know about you but I was DRAFTED! Never wanted to go in the 1st place but the other options (Canada and prison) were never serious considerations for me. Hope you live long & prosper in Flagstaff..............
@MrRonnieG I was at Chu Lai, and we (doorgunner) dropped you guys into LZ's a ton of times. Was all over Nam. I was at Phu Bai, with the 101st Airborne, and Da Nang and Quang Tri with the Gypsy Bandits Trans., before I transferred to assault choppers. We were in on the invasion of Laos (Dewey Canyon 2) when I was still in Quang Tri.I'm guessing that you were a grunt, right? M-79? Machine gunner? Radioman? Medic? Hope you're sound mentally and physically.Lots of guys don't ask for help! VA sucks!
sixtiesrockboy ~ Lived in Long Beach 3 different times; '74 behind the Los Altos shopping center on San Anseline Ave, '75 on Mezzanine Way off Spring St. and '76 on Beverly Plaza off Atherton. Was born in L.A. Currently live in Pueblo, Colorado where it is also slower. Been to Flag many many times, high country for sure. Considered moving there in '83; drove (1st) to PHX where it was about 2,000 degrees so went north on I-17 (Black Canyon Hwy) and things cooled quick! (CON'T)
This has been my theme song for as long as I can remember, with a little praise from the Lord above. Everyone keep hope alive that I can find the right lady!
REMEMBER THE SUMMER OF 70 THIS WAS OUR CREWS THEME SONG ..WE WORE OUT ABOUT FOUR 45S AND BECAME FANS AND EVENTUALLY FRIENDS FOR LIFE. TODD WILL BE IN THE HALL OF FAME
Came home from the war on 06 Novebmer 1970 and started living life and making up for a Tour of Duty in Southeast Asia that was worse than hell. Dedicated this song to my good buddy, Mike Bowers. We roomed together during the summer of 1971 in Seal Beach, California at Oakwood Gardens, right off Pacific Coast Hwy. & 2nd Street just down PCH from the Long Beach Marina. Mike passed away in 1987, age 40, but I think of him & those great times, still. I miss you Mike, always will.
@MrRonnieG Know Oakwood Gardens well! I came here to Flagstaff, Az. from Long Beach, Ca., in 2007.Like it here really well! Very scenic, rugged, beautiful, and QUIET! Nam fucked us ALL up, individually, and as a country! I came back to the world in October of '71, and have yet to recover! Total noise aversion from four rocket attacks, and thousands of artillery rounds going off! Even the noise from my computer keys bothers me! Hope you're doing better, and welcome home!
@MrRonnieG Wow. Thank you for sharing that part of your life. This song came out when I was in junior high, and we listened to it every day on the bus home from school. Now I am a 56 year old woman! Who knew I would get old.
If you knew Todd, you would KNOW he was not saying women are stupid, but that the things that one notices when in love, might be stupid, but sure are fun.
I remember this song In the winter of 1970, working at a crappy (factory) bakery and having an incredible crush on a this tall beautiful guy, that worked across the room.We just made eye contact all winter long, and at 18 that was enough. (LOVE) The song brings back that memory. thanks!!!
I remember this so well and loved it - still do. Talented lyricist. Cannot say I like the part that states "... they may be stupid, but they sure are fun..." I'll cut him some slack as its just a song! Thank you for this post.
@gva0917 In 8th grade, this was my gym teacher's favorite song (he thought the title was "Leroy Boy"). And as for the "stupid but fun" line, Todd was probably just having some extra "fun."
@gva0917 That line is often misunderstood.Listen to the line before it.The pronoun"they"does not refer to women in general it refers to"things about that special one"

For chart completists, the 45 label shows the artist *only* as "Runt"--Todd Rundgren with 2 backing musicians.

MrRonnieG 5 months ago

MrRonnieG 5 months ago
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I'm good to go, ha, if I had somewhere to go. I ran into a bunch of guys in Nam who took basic at "Tigerland" which was Ft. Polk, LA. They'd always talk like is was the worst place, short of hell, to take basic but I NEVER talked to a Polk guy who I honestly thought had it worse than my old D-4-1 at Ord. They beat the crap out of us up there and by the time I got to MP/A.I.T. @ Gordon it seemed like 2 months vacationing on Maui.
MrRonnieG 5 months ago
@MrRonnieG I called Polk hot coral hell, because of the humidity and coral snakes. Terrible place, but hard to imagine that it could be worse than what we suffered at Ord! It might as well have been G.B. at Benning! Only guys like you can know how thrilled I was to escape Ord!?
sixtiesrockboy 5 months ago

MrRonnieG 5 months ago
@MrRonnieG Yeah, same here. We lost two dead to meningitis, and three critical! They had to cut ALL of them loose, because their meningitis was so severe, that all suffered neurological deficits, hearing loss, permanent sight loss, or all three. I myself missed boot camp graduation on 4-10-70, with a 104 degree fever, and symptoms of bronchitis AND meningitis! I was in Ord Hospital for five days and nights, and sick as a dog! Really messed up cycle! You doing any better? Hope so!

The only people who know my status, are my family, friends, and those, (usually professionals) with legit. ntk!

MrRonnieG 5 months ago
@MrRonnieG I would'nt worry about that! We need a support system as much as anyone else, and I have NO problem with that, if you don't! We have a lot in common, and many vets have no one to talk with, because people who have'nt "been there, done that", can't relate! You may have noticed that there is very little activity on this page anyway. Love the D.B.'s, especially What A Fool Believes If anything, I think that our back-and-forth is entertaining to people with no real lives, don't you?.
sixtiesrockboy 5 months ago
@sixtiesrockboy ~ More importantly, they are all really terrific human beings. The middle daughter (Jessica) teaches journalism at a community college in Kent, Wa. Their mom was a terrific lady though we parted ways, up in Lewiston, Idaho ~ a long time ago. Sometimes life goes like that; you don't realize what you had until long after you've moved on. I've made my mistakes but known many fine people. My only grand daughter (3 yr) was named "Ronnie Jean" after me!!! (my name is Ronnie Gene).
MrRonnieG 5 months ago

MrRonnieG 5 months ago

MrRonnieG 6 months ago

As Clint said in The Outlaw Josey Wales, "Boy, dyin' ain't much of a livin!" I'm STILL haunted (not the same as guilty), but I push on, and try to make them proud!
sixtiesrockboy 5 months ago
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I still have a copy of the NTSB report. In addition to the 7 crew members that were working PSA 182, there were THIRTY other PSA employees who died in the crash ~ all headed for company training in San Diego. Cause of the accident was PSA 182's flight crew's failure to keep "visual separation" with the Cessna 172 which was flying a parallel heading of 090 magnetic.
MrRonnieG 6 months ago
Only reason I know is because, for more than a quarter century, I studied every NTSB (National Transportation Safey Board) investion & probable cause report ever published ~ a hobby, of sorts. 182 was on final to Lindbergh and had been cleared to land.
MrRonnieG 6 months ago
@sixtiesrockboy ~ I very well remember the PSA crash (it was PSA flight #182/B727 on 26 Sept 78). I worked in the airline industry for more than 20 years (was a outside sales representative for PSA in the early 80's, covered San Bernardino to the Nevada border) and made that trip (to San Diego/Lindbergh Field) a few times myself, for company training. A student pilot in a Cessna flew into 182's right wing aileron (control surface). Capt.'s last words ,"we're going down, PSA."
MrRonnieG 6 months ago

MrRonnieG 6 months ago

Real!
sixtiesrockboy 6 months ago
@sixtiesrockboy Americans need to grow some testicles and ovaries, and start DEFENDING veterans! A pension granted to a veteran, but TOTALLY based on evil lies and assertions by unnamed and faceless ASSHOLES, is almost as bad as NO pension! Veterans don't even have the right to know the names and positions of the "professionals" making these statements, to be given concrete and logical examples of why these bullshit diagnoses were made, or to face and challenge those who dream these fantasies!
sixtiesrockboy 6 months ago
@MrRonnieG You have to wonder when they tag you with all these bullshit lies, and unfairly label you mentally, if they are'nt allowed to say so, but they actually believe you, and have some idea of what you've been through. It's possible that they don't believe what they write, (in which case the asses should tell you confidentially) but they know the way the Veterans Administration operates, and that it's secretly anti-veteran, and that they might be trying to enhance your chances with lies!
sixtiesrockboy 6 months ago

Good luck!

MrRonnieG 6 months ago

We roomed together during the summer of 1971 in Seal Beach, California at Oakwood Gardens, right off Pacific Coast Hwy. & 2nd Street just down PCH from the Long Beach Marina. Although the entire verse is: talking about things,
about that special one.
they may be stupid but they sure are fun.
Could be talking about "things" as in talking about stupid things with that special one.
Whatever it's a great song.
Hooray for women!!

@57highland He always said (and I always believed) that Todd mean the "things" were 'stupid, but fun.' Not women.

@gva0917 I love that - thinking the title was "Leroy Boy." I agree about the "stupid" line - it probably just fit!!!!

@gva0917 That line is often misunderstood.Listen to the line before it.The pronoun"they"does not refer to women in general it refers to"things about that special one"
