There is an interview of Peter Buck (sometime in 1984 or 85) in Guitar Player, where they asked him: Which guitars on which songs? His answer was he aimed for a sound or color and then tweaked everything to get it (guitar, amp, effects, etc.). He found that unique, chorusy, jangly, refreshing (at least then) REM sound. The Rick was the easiest to achieve this with, with a close second to the Tele. He toured with both but found the Tele more durable.
@SeanSM92 I do REM covers with a 76 ash Tele through a Roland Jazz Chorus amp with a little delay and lots and lots of chorus. These guys nailed it.........and well executed! TSR
Unbelievable, what a great guitar sound! I reckon that is a Fender Telecaster Custom reissue? What ohter effects do you use? I definately wanna try this at home!
It might sound like a Tele on the record, but I saw an interview with Peter Buck recently, and he mentions that he's used the Rick 360 on every record except the first single. Aside from what guitar makes what sound, that was awesome! Another one of my faves to play on the Ric 4003.
Eh...that he used the Rick on every record doesn't mean he used it on every song on every record... The teles (a 52' style, a light thinline and a black custom) were frequent all the way up to and including 1985.
From the Pete Buck interview in Melody Maker, Dec 1984:
"The jangling arpeggios of Buck's Rickenbacker 12-string ("It's only on THREE of the tracks on 'Reckoning'," he states firmly, "I use a Telecaster now."
So, while he has indeed used it, he hasn't always used it as much as you would think. As a side note, when playing "Pretty Persuasion" live on the Old Grey Whistle Test, he indeed uses a Tele.
great cover!

Sounds great and an excellent educational tool for learning this song. You should have done the whole song to get the solo break in there.
