1. When Martin introduces the song @ the AOL acoustic he says its about "a summer love that is short lived, and you hold onto it, weather you mean to or not", hence the line in the 1st verse "...im holding onto something and I do not know why"

2. 2nd verse "today i'm on my own." suggestin that he's broken up with this girl. and " I'm itchin for the tall grass longin for the breeze" suggests that he longs for the relationship he had.

@Moonttss and finally " gotta find a way out.." I interpret that as "a way out of this misery". and why would he be miserable is he was still in a relationship, at least... one that was going well.

If you disagree then thats fine coz i know theres not THAT much proof in the song to support my argument. But I cant imagine him singing "today is a winding road thats taking me to places that i didnt want to go" if he was happy at all.
