@romber58 ..Aye, and I'm a waffle-maker ... as was my father before me , and his before him. It is, in fact, our family name . You wouldn't be trying to insult the House of Waffle now, would you?
@enterthedome Leftist pseudo-intellectual degenerates (redundant, I know) like Hicks typically only have the one layer of paint covering their neurotic hostility and self-loathing ..and snobbery/ridicule is one of their usual 'defense mechanisms' when some of the 'paint' flakes off.
His words here aren't "a stupid waffle waitress" ..He says "an f-ing waffle waitress" indicating contempt for working people. Maybe he'd strayed from his Texas roots & had too much Hollywood influence.
@ProNorden I don't see what's wrong with striving to be better than working class, honestly. I'm from a working class family, but I don't really want to stay there, you know?
@enterthedome There is nothing "better" than working class. There's 'different' ... often phony and worse.
The values of 'work, faith, and family' are integral to a good society ... and that's seldom exemplified and frequently derided by Leftists, comedic or otherwise.
John Cleese is spot on with all his choices! Bill Hicks was from Texas. I'm from Alabama and can attest that the stereotype Mr. Hicks invokes is plentifully represented where I live. I can well imagine one of my underachieving neighbors asking "what you reading for?". So for me it doesn't matter whether Hicks was really asked the question or not. Even if it didn't actually happen to him, it still has the ring of truth, for me at least. Nothing dishonest about that. Sad to lose him when we did.
Odd that he "compared" Hicks to Lenny Bruce. I would have said that he "nicked" Lenny Bruce and pretended that the material was fresh when it was recycled! Even Alexei Sayles did a Lenny rift that I thought was funnier than his when Alexei compared The Cross with The Electric Chair and did a simulation of "frying on one." I guess it's what you do with the material that makes the difference. A shame that John didn't site Alexei's routine and called THAT "Lenny Bruce but going further..."
Bill Hicks ....so, ...snobbery from an underachieving neurotic .And dishonest too, since no waitress ever really asked him what he was reading "for". And he wasn't confronted by anyone from the next booth. And Hicks uses a hacky stereotype of a Southerner/Westerner.
Suppose he'd already gone through his 'airline food' and 'mother-in-law' material.
This kinda makes one disappointed in Cleese. I wouldn't have thought that possible.
@jkl890 , @tacomonday1 Can it be "trolling" if one's comments are sincere ? Hicks had his moments and was often worthwhile, but smearing Southerners or "christians" or the poor or less-educated ...and doing the usual Leftist poses should generally be considered "hacky" among professional comic writers.
An overdone trope for those of third-rate ability.
Because, comedy changes people, not all those important stuff necks who owns companies and are presidents and such, it's way to late for them. but young people who are just finding themselves in a world that's to easy to take way to seriously, to show them how to laugh of things, that changes them for the better and ensures they become better adults. Plus, comedy keeps the entire world sane, without it, we would go quite mad.
Comedy changes things! Bill Hicks has helped to massively change my world view, and as such change how I conduct myself in the world, and as such change the impact I have on the world from that of incongrous ignorance to facillitating understanding. C'mon, John, look a little deeper!
03:23 "so I don't end-up being a ..waffle waitress ". - Bill Hicks
Could be worse. Could end-up a mean-spirited neurotic pseudo-intellectual snob ... or even worse, one that exhibits contempt for waitresses.
One gets that 'cringe' feeling when a Liberal's mask falls off.

I have to disagree with Cleese. Hicks isn't that great. He's skillful, just isn't funny. To me.
Draeka 3 months ago
Check-out Bill Burr, Bill Maher, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert and Colin Quinn in their better moments.
And for sketch comedy check "Armstrong and Miller" and "Mitchel and Webb".
