I can stay up all night trying to explain the discipline that karate is in, but you would not understand ... u can learn it by yourself... for exemple: the philosophy of karate shotokan is life ;)
I was just wondering if the practice of Makiwara is combined with the use of Dit Da Jow? Or is that only for Kung Fu Iron Palm training? Also what are the chances to develop severe arthritis in the future due to Makiwara training?

"A waste of time" .. foolish misguided soul.. One of the purposes of "training" (to me at least) is to prepare for whatever life throws at you next. "Life" doesn't care how much you punch or kick, just that you do what you need to do when it needs to be done.
I have a very simple rule regarding martial arts; they are a complete waste of time. Paradoxically, it is because they are a waste of time, one should strive, no matter what, to perfect them. If a person understands this, they are ready to train. If they don't, they should stay away from martial arts. Why is it a waste of time? The answer is very simple; analyze human nature. Therein lies the tragedy.
I hate how lightly people take Karate; it is an EXTREMELY cold blooded martial art. My beef with it though, is that it only works with brutal hand conditioning like this.
No part of Karate training should be taken lightly, conditioning is only a small part of karate training and not all styles use it, this type of training should aid your karate, mind, body, and sprit, technique & speed = power not just brutal hand conditioning.

Karate should indeed only be practiced by bodyguards, specifically, people who protect presidents or kings, or primse ministers, where its okay to be cold blooded in the name of defense. For average folks like me though, Tai Chi is the order of the day. If bodyguards do practice it, they should train like this.
Karate is practiced by many people the world over as an art a martial art, to say it should only be practiced by bodyguards i'm sorry i dont agree, most bodygauards would more than likely be armed in the situations you mention taking away the need for Karate (empty hand) I practice Karate and have done for thirty years, but i also practice Tai chi, Fujian white crane from the Fujian province.

It is done with jow. Just make sure you don't have any open wounds where you're applying it.
