Never seen Jan play an SG before; has he often played one in the past? A lot of guitarists seem to play them in their youth then move to to other guitars;it was cool to see Jan playing tis one at this senior year.
@fabrikk60 Totally agree! it seems out of place for him, but he's doing that guitar a favor! such, funk, such groove, such TALENT! Jan Akkerman is the guy I go to listen when my mind grows tired of the same old chords
He's surely capable of doing more commercial things, but in essence he's a non-conformist, with a wicked sense of humor, that isn't always appreciated or understood. I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with his upbringing, as well. In general I love the man and what he has achieved in music.
@angie4josh Is that supposed to be a good thing? Why is that bad-ass? Is there something wrong with learning the English language you speak it numb nuts.... You are a perfect example of what the word retard means... It's bas-ass not to learn a lick of English........ LOLOLOLOLOLOL.... What a retard.......
Jazzguts EXACTLY tells the truth. It is a shame how some YouTUbe-users abuse their option to give an comment...puberistical arguments (right words) I always wonder, if they were able to play an instrument at a nearly certain level by themselves?
Guys I've totally "outlived" the stage who is better than who, I find that puberistic totally uninteresting statements, it's all a matter of TASTE therefor years ago I've left that behind discussing who's better than who. There is no better there's DIFFERENT because every guitarist has his own style and interpretation.like it or not, Vic.
@Jazzguts Very well put. I like Akkerman a lot, but then again, I like Willie Nelson's nylon string stylings--and Glenn Phillips (Athens, GA) stuff. They all play utterly different material, and have different "skill" levels--since when is "skill" just mechanical ability? That would put players like Malmsteen and Vai on my list. (Amazing technicians with utterly nothing to say.) Akkerman is somewhere in the middle-Hocus Pocus firmly welding him to the melodic memory of everyone, fan and non-fan.
@kc7fys Once a Guitarist-friend of mine, quoted: For me arguments(not discussion) about style is totally un-interesting because the discussion mostly says more about yourself then the one being judged, a strict Rock player may not like Akkerman because he has some Jazzy abstract notes going on while a Jazz or modern-Classic player may find it quite appealing and adventurous, truth lies in the eye of the beholder.Even more abstract there exists no truth, Vic.
@Jazzguts As an English teacher, I am stunned and impressed by "puberistic," and the misquoted but even more fantastic "PUBERISTICAL" below. Might I add that I find Vic and others' opinions hyperpuberistically puberistic. And that's from a an avid puberist myself.
Your wrong...with respect..."Feeling, the first time you here someone you know who's playing" Jan Akkerman has that... the others guys? Vandenberg just another technical player, don't get it from him. Whitesnake, give me a break. Love Steve Vai...he's million planets away. From what I've heard, checked out on YouTube anyway.. Jan got his own voice. Listen to Focus (Moving Waves), beautiful improvised solo's.
Kinks do you have a clue what you're talking about? It's obvious from Akkerman's right hand technique and his phrasing that he has long been a jazz player. Have you heard any of his gypsy jazz-esque tunes?

I hate all that jazz/blues shit! jan Akkerman lost his way after Focus trying to get respect as a jazz guitarist when he had his own style of baroque (bar rock?) melodic chops and sounded like no one eles on earth
everybody is developping their telents during their lifetime, Jan Akkerman is such a great guitar player, Rock has no secrets anymore for him. when he was exploring the music, he found less restricions in jazz. Why being negative about someones life?
@papabcd : totally agreed. Jan Akkerman is GREAT! Actually any prolific musician in the past moved at older age either to Blues, or to Jazz or to both :)
Masterful stuff

I remember him from the early '70s when playing with FOCUS. Even though he looks older, his music has developed and blossomed even more so.

He still has fire in his belly, the only dutch guitarist who matters to me!
