O-60 in the ralliart is not 6.6 seconds. Ive timed myself at atleast 5.5 everytime, with a little launch. They dont launch the ralliart in the video...
@Davex495 Do you have a ralliart or ever been in one? They are very under estimated. Keep in mind boost hits very low in the ralliarts, much lower than the evo x. Even if idid just have someone time me with a stop watch, theres no possible way I would get 0-60 in 6.6. Pay attention to the video and notice they dont launch the car at all. I can launch it at 4 thousand rpms, and get my turbo spooled up before take off...A lot of people dont think you can launch with an sst trany, but u can.
@flipmodified66 Only if you don't care about breaking a 12 grand tranny. Sorry, but a clutch dump at 4k RPM is just plain dumb...especially after you start to mod and tune this car. That clutch is a real limiting factor to both this and the EVO MR.
@flipmodified66 the sst trany is not great you cant really mod it because the trany cant take a lot of extra power (same problem evo x mr owners run into) love the design of the evo x and ralliart but the ralliart is heavy and slow. and yes your right you can launch it but you will destroy the trany it also overheats when you track it and the worst part is that its to close the the price as a evo x gsr.
@LFADRIFTER Well somebody is working a good cheap clutch pack for it at least...but yeah, the tranny is a killer limiting factor. But then again, most people can't afford to tune these cars much beyond 400 torque anyways. As for the price of the GSR...for many savy buyers, it's not the initial cost that is the issue...it's the insurance (basically 2+ speeding tickets or if your young with even one ticket and you can kiss the EVO goodbye).
I love all these little cars... I have a wrx but I don't talk crap on any of these cars. They can all be EASILY and safely modded to blow people's minds. I used to be "American muscle all the way!" but I love the little turbo'd 4 bangers! Maybe not as competitive in a straight line, but way more fun!
I think Mitsubishi would be way more fun on the track and fun everyday over the MAAZDa. As the front wheel drive have Torque Steering issue, under whelming understeering. It's too much power for it to be handle on a tight track. Really need an open road to be enjoyed, which limit itself.
@zinny999 So you drove both then? Mazdaspeed 3's dominate autocross events. You don't get much tighter than an AutoX course. Torque steer? Please, if you're affected by the little bit of torque steer the Mazdaspeed 3 gives, you probably shouldn't be driving very fast to begin with.
@vivolorosso I have...and to say the MS3 will have a little TS in an autocross course is like saying Rosie O'donnel is a bit overweight and a bit of a loud mouth. Yeah you can deal with it...but I'd rather not(and if your not getting the TS, your not driving hard enough). And yes the MS3 is better geared for the autocross then the other two...but if your in a more open field, like say the back roads or an actual race course like laguna seca or infineon, the WRX and RA will muder the MS3.

The RA needs new tires (and optimally, rims to stick 234 or 245 tires) along with a dyno tune to beat the stock MS3. And the 2011 WRX just wins stock. Course the RA can be tuned MUCH better then the other three (dyno tune results in +30 WHP so this baby was seriously detuned to keep it from eating EVO sales like the WRX is doing to the STi).

Also note that the MS3 has lateral grip of .92 G over the .81 on the RA. And unlike the RA, the WRX has had a TON of upgrades for 2011. Really stock vs stock...the RA is really lagging behind. Don't be such a mitsu fanboi idiot. Accept where you lose and go for where you win (tuned out RAs win).

@AnTHoNyB1125 no, the WRX tranny and drive train isn't nearly as good as the STI. The WRX gets about 210 WHP. Yeah the RA is heavier...but the RA with what I mentioned at sears point runs sub 13.5 and the fastest I have seen is a 13.19...so yeah it's you, not the car. And considering that about 2 grand of upgrades and a tune gives the RA 100+WHP, once you start to mod the cars, the RA really start to pull ahead of the WRX.

Anything more and yes, the clutch pack, clutch cooling, oil cooling and the list of stuff you need will get pretty expensive...but that is true of a WRX as well...even MORE so actually. 300 WHP on a RA is done with some bolt ons and a tune. That is an awesome thing. If you need more then 300 WHP, the amount of money you need, your better off starting withe STI or EVO (GSR, the MR tranny would still need clutch work).

@AnTHoNyB1125 No you can't. The WRX drivetrain is CRAP. It can barely handle the stock power...much less any level of tuning. Beyond a simple flash job, you need to replace the AWD system or you will burn it out. While the RA lower engine is exactly the same as the EVO and can hold as much power as a tuned out EVO, the WRX does NOT use the same lower engine as the STI. The WRX lower engine will blow, so you need new pistons, forged arms and shaft before you can reach anywhere near 300 WHP.

Yeah I can make a RA with 300WHP with 20 bucks...it'll break the car...rather quickly, but hey it's 300WHP for only 20 bucks...right? The AWD system on the WRX is crap. Even with just a stage two cobb tuning, the AWD system starts to strip, Give it like 60k miles and it will be stripped clean...more power, faster it goes. The pistons will melt with 500+ crank HP on a stock WRX internal quickly.

@AnTHoNyB1125 Umm considering what the IWST forumite says about actually tuning a car that they are a fan of says...no, you are just full of it. Somebody who has done everything on a WRX short of the turbo upgrade (which is not just bolt ons) is sitting at 330 WHP. Anything short of a redoing the entire turbo system to use the GTR40 turbo on a WRX will not get you anywhere near 450 WHP. The GST project RA is doing 370 WHP and 330 WTQ with bolt ons and a tune (tq limited for tranny).
A 400whp WRX STi isn't unheard of as there are many people who make 400whp off the stock block with bolt-ons & a tune. In terms of transmission & suspension,the WRX (USDM) is trash. However, a TRUE WRX (JDM) comes face to face with the RA in everything you can possibly think of. The JDM ej207 is a far cry from the USDM ej205 as it comes from the factory with forged internals & the suspension is all STi spec.
@DOHCEJ22E1 The issue isn't if you can make that much power, the issue is SHOULD you make that much power on stock internals and a very crappy AWD differantial? And the anwer is no, no you shouldn't. The RA can be pushed to 600+ WHP. People do it. People who do it right used sleeved blocks, clutch packs, tranny coolers etc etc. And there are plenty of people who do it the wrong way and brag how cheap it was. As for JDM being better...meh we don't get it here so somewhat irrelivant,
We all know that the USDM WRX doesn't make good power on stock internal (you'd be lucky to break 300whp on stock internals) but I factor in the JDM stuff because Mitsu's RA/EVO's engine internals/powertrain are virtually unchanged from their JDM counterparts while Japan doesn't even use the 205 for their STis. They use the 207, which is a far more superior 2L. And it isn't the differential that has so much of a problem, it's the integrity of the transmission itself. They're trash.

I have never heard of the tranny itself having issues with the higher tuned WRX...it's the AWD differential that ends up slipping and burning out...not the tranny at above 300 WHP. They really overbuilt the tranny compared to the rest of the WRX for some reason from what I can see. Enough so that you can clutch dump to your hearts content and your engine will still die before the tranny does (maybe that is an indication of the bad engine more then good tranny :P ).
Maybe the newer trannies can hold up well (currently researching) but the transmissions to the bugeye & blobeye model WRXs break like glass under crazy launches. The EJ25 has ALWAYS had issues be it head gaskets or rod bearings. That's just a cursed block. I definitely see the engine dying sooner than the transmission. I'm a Subaru guy & I'll tell you right now that EJ25s suck. I have a Legacy equipped with an EJ25D & I'm waiting for it to pop but the tranny/AWD is fine.

The new ones are pretty different and the 2011 is actually quite nice other then the tissue paper AWD system (and even though they upped the chassis, it's still not as good as the RA's...power is cheap...making it corner is the expensive part).

You may not be able to upgrade a speed3 in the same way that you can upgrade a ralliart but who is to say that people are willing to upgrade and spend the extra thousands.
I would personally rather buy the better car and leave it at that, then buy a more expensive car that has less to offer and spend more on upgrades.

When I was looking for a new car these three along with the Legacy 2.5gt where the cars I looked at. I ended with the MS3 because for the money, it just can't be beat.
For the price savings over the WRX(my personal runner up) you can drop a few easy and basic mods into it and it wipes with floor with the new WRX and older STI's. Plus the new WRX just looks like crap IMO. I really like the look of the first gen WRX, but the new gen is very ugly.
speed 3s might be the ugliest cars on the road they look like fucking mini vans so all you soccer moms out there the Mazda speed3 is for you it has room for the whole family and lots of storage space in the ugly ass hatch back trunk

did anyone notice how they compared an 09 ralliart to the 08 subaru. the new 09 wrx has a 265 HP engine that brings the car from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds compared to the 224 hp one here and it is a much better car and smokes all of these. Its an unrealistic comparison to compare an older car to a newer one.

Not saying that pertains to this vid though =] I drove my buddies decently modded Speed3 compared to my mustang and I was so jealous. He had about 290whp and suspension upgrades and it just felt great. The gearbox, steering (similar to my old 6) just perfect. I don't like hatches though =/

@c0nfu53d when you don't spend all your money on a car and actually have stuff to take with you, a hatch is more practical. If you get a fuel efficient turbo in a car that's fun to drive that handles well and you get practicality and versatility with it at a good price compared to its competitors, it shouldn't surprise you that more mature car enthusiasts choose the ms3.

@AlexanderBlueAvenue Agreed, BUT in retrospect to the Mazda the WRX is about 7k MORE! You can get a loaded MS3 for 23-24k, a WRX starts at about 28k and fully optioned 30k is easily surpassed. So for the money, I'd still choose the MS3. The WRX costs as much as a base 370Z. Not biased, just facts.

I think Mitsubishi would be way more fun on the track and fun everyday over the MAAZDa. As the front wheel drive have Torque Steering issue, under whelming understeering. It's too much power for it to be handle on a tight track. Really need an open road to be enjoyed, which limit itself.

@vivolorosso I have...and to say the MS3 will have a little TS in an autocross course is like saying Rosie O'donnel is a bit overweight and a bit of a loud mouth. Yeah you can deal with it...but I'd rather not(and if your not getting the TS, your not driving hard enough). And yes the MS3 is better geared for the autocross then the other two...but if your in a more open field, like say the back roads or an actual race course like laguna seca or infineon, the WRX and RA will muder the MS3.

The RA needs new tires (and optimally, rims to stick 234 or 245 tires) along with a dyno tune to beat the stock MS3. And the 2011 WRX just wins stock. Course the RA can be tuned MUCH better then the other three (dyno tune results in +30 WHP so this baby was seriously detuned to keep it from eating EVO sales like the WRX is doing to the STi).

Yeah the RA is heavier...but the RA with what I mentioned at sears point runs sub 13.5 and the fastest I have seen is a 13.19...so yeah it's you, not the car. And considering that about 2 grand of upgrades and a tune gives the RA 100+WHP, once you start to mod the cars, the RA really start to pull ahead of the WRX.

Anything more and yes, the clutch pack, clutch cooling, oil cooling and the list of stuff you need will get pretty expensive...but that is true of a WRX as well...even MORE so actually. 300 WHP on a RA is done with some bolt ons and a tune. That is an awesome thing. If you need more then 300 WHP, the amount of money you need, your better off starting withe STI or EVO (GSR, the MR tranny would still need clutch work).

@AnTHoNyB1125 No you can't. The WRX drivetrain is CRAP. It can barely handle the stock power...much less any level of tuning. Beyond a simple flash job, you need to replace the AWD system or you will burn it out. While the RA lower engine is exactly the same as the EVO and can hold as much power as a tuned out EVO, the WRX does NOT use the same lower engine as the STI. The WRX lower engine will blow, so you need new pistons, forged arms and shaft before you can reach anywhere near 300 WHP.

Somebody who has done everything on a WRX short of the turbo upgrade (which is not just bolt ons) is sitting at 330 WHP. Anything short of a redoing the entire turbo system to use the GTR40 turbo on a WRX will not get you anywhere near 450 WHP. The GST project RA is doing 370 WHP and 330 WTQ with bolt ons and a tune (tq limited for tranny).

A 400whp WRX STi isn't unheard of as there are many people who make 400whp off the stock block with bolt-ons & a tune. In terms of transmission & suspension,the WRX (USDM) is trash. However, a TRUE WRX (JDM) comes face to face with the RA in everything you can possibly think of. The JDM ej207 is a far cry from the USDM ej205 as it comes from the factory with forged internals & the suspension is all STi spec.

We all know that the USDM WRX doesn't make good power on stock internal (you'd be lucky to break 300whp on stock internals) but I factor in the JDM stuff because Mitsu's RA/EVO's engine internals/powertrain are virtually unchanged from their JDM counterparts while Japan doesn't even use the 205 for their STis. They use the 207, which is a far more superior 2L. And it isn't the differential that has so much of a problem, it's the integrity of the transmission itself. They're trash.

I have never heard of the tranny itself having issues with the higher tuned WRX...it's the AWD differential that ends up slipping and burning out...not the tranny at above 300 WHP. They really overbuilt the tranny compared to the rest of the WRX for some reason from what I can see. Enough so that you can clutch dump to your hearts content and your engine will still die before the tranny does (maybe that is an indication of the bad engine more then good tranny :P ).

Maybe the newer trannies can hold up well (currently researching) but the transmissions to the bugeye & blobeye model WRXs break like glass under crazy launches. The EJ25 has ALWAYS had issues be it head gaskets or rod bearings. That's just a cursed block. I definitely see the engine dying sooner than the transmission. I'm a Subaru guy & I'll tell you right now that EJ25s suck. I have a Legacy equipped with an EJ25D & I'm waiting for it to pop but the tranny/AWD is fine.

Listen to the TopGear Evo Test against WRX STI. Jeremy Clarkson love the car and he's right. The ralliart have 53hp less, no brembo, no bilstein, no eibach and have evo 9 awd system. You may not be able to upgrade a speed3 in the same way that you can upgrade a ralliart but who is to say that people are willing to upgrade and spend the extra thousands.
I would personally rather buy the better car and leave it at that, then buy a more expensive car that has less to offer and spend more on upgrades.

When I was looking for a new car these three along with the Legacy 2.5gt where the cars I looked at. I ended with the MS3 because for the money, it just can't be beat.
For the price savings over the WRX(my personal runner up) you can drop a few easy and basic mods into it and it wipes with floor with the new WRX and older STI's. Plus the new WRX just looks like crap IMO. I really like the look of the first gen WRX, but the new gen is very ugly.

Mazda can easily keep up with both the EVO X and STI too.
Downpipe, Testpipe, Catback, Short Ram Intake.
300WHP easy. And you can find all that for around a grand.
So for about 25 grand you have a car keepin up with $35,000 cars.

It isn't a GTS, it's the Ralliart Model. The GTS starts at about 25k, the Ralliart starts at about 32k.

funny how they mentioned first gen wrx was better... im pretty sure a 03 wrx could beat all cars. 0-60 in 5.3 for example and the wrx was much lighter in those days

did anyone notice how they compared an 09 ralliart to the 08 subaru. the new 09 wrx has a 265 HP engine that brings the car from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds compared to the 224 hp one here and it is a much better car and smokes all of these. Its an unrealistic comparison to compare an older car to a newer one.

I wonder if these car review companies ever get paid off. I'm sure it happens every now and then. Not saying that pertains to this vid though =] I drove my buddies decently modded Speed3 compared to my mustang and I was so jealous. He had about 290whp and suspension upgrades and it just felt great. The gearbox, steering (similar to my old 6) just perfect. I don't like hatches though =/

Why do you always use a hatch Mazda 3 for test and demo purposes? Why don't you use the sedan instead? Most especially that the other cars you pit against the 3 are also sedans. I'm not much into hatchbacks, I like sedans better.

@c0nfu53d when you don't spend all your money on a car and actually have stuff to take with you, a hatch is more practical. If you get a fuel efficient turbo in a car that's fun to drive that handles well and you get practicality and versatility with it at a good price compared to its competitors, it shouldn't surprise you that more mature car enthusiasts choose the ms3.

@AlexanderBlueAvenue Agreed, BUT in retrospect to the Mazda the WRX is about 7k MORE! You can get a loaded MS3 for 23-24k, a WRX starts at about 28k and fully optioned 30k is easily surpassed. So for the money, I'd still choose the MS3. The WRX costs as much as a base 370Z. Not biased, just facts.
