got a chance to catch him live a couple of times (once in a night club with about 75 in the crowd). But after 19 platinum albums and how many gold singles (written and sung)......
wwwgreatbuyoutletscom wwwtopfuelsavercom But by now the doctor had entered, an important-looking person with long, dark whiskers and a shiny, shaven chin, wearing a bearskin coat. As he crossed the threshold he stopped, taken aback; he probably fancied he had come to the wrong place. "How is this? Where am I?" he muttered, not removing his coat nor his peaked sealskin cap. The crowd, the poverty of the room, the washing hanging on a line in the corner, puzzled him. What, don't you believe in God
I grew up listening to Neil also as my father played his albums. My father was an unhappy soul but listening to Neil made him whistle and hum. These are my favorite memories of my father. He passed away in 2000. I saw Neil in concert in Illinois after my father passed away and when I heard Neil sing it sent chills throughout my body.... and it was magical. @DavidLT101 Bit of a long bow isn't it to imagine this song is about a character in the bible? Three Dog Night sang a song about Jeremiah but nobody would imagine it was the one in the bible any more than anyone would think that Elton John's song Daniel was about a man in a lion's den.

This song helped inspire a character in my novel "The Proper Order of Things". Check it out on Amazon. If you like Neil Diamond, I think you'll enjoy the book. The main character was named after Sweet Caroline. Her youngest sibling is Shilo. She's a girl, but her mother wanted a boy...
Neil sings from his heart, writes about his own journey through life, much we can identidy with wonder whats happened to him for him to write: "pretty amazing grace"
sounds like a spiritual encounter that takes courage!. Good on ya Neil;
Whatever your interpretation, I think this song takes all back to some special time in our innocence.
@Adrock1011, you may be thinking of the 1970's hit "Shannon" about the loss of the family dog. Sad song that helps me reach a catharsis when I'm missing my own dog.
I was born in 1988. My father was born 1966. My dad was always a big fan of Neil Diamond and was brought up listening to him. I remember being about 7 with a guitar wishing I could play the background tune because i knew every ward to this song and used to sing it all the time to be like him. He taught me what music was and what life was about. He died at 41 in 2007. It gives me great pride when I listen to Neil and cant name a bad song he wrote and sung. R.I.P DAD and long live Neil Diamond
@kilted06yass I kind of know where you're coming from, I was born in 63 and remember growing up in the 60's watching my Mom clean house while she listened to Neil, My Mom died when I was 24, So listening to Neil brings back a lot of those great childhood memories for me, plus his music is just great. Sorry about your Dad, 41 is awful young.
@ives100 It does not matter if one calls him the Jewish Elvis or Neil Diamond...when using the euphemism of Jewish Elvis is meant as a compliment to his looks and his ability to thoroughly entertain people through his music and performances. This is the way I see it: Shilo was his imaginary friend (an imaginary boy). And after a young girl with fire lead him astray, blind as a child. She made him laugh and then left him thinking he would under stand. But, instead left him all alone and now he wants to go back to his child hood where he wasn't so lonely. When you see the film"the Jazz Singer" ,the first movie from Neil Diamond , the Roots of her Life , the Voice and passion for the music, this video is of the point.
Thanks so much for posting the early performens in Tv !!
Shilo was a young boy that he called out to when he was lonely, and the whole point of talking about a girl that left him or no one wanted to be friends with him is Shilo was always there, wanting a friend and being a friend!
The depth and feeling of this song is tremendous. Neil's talent and heartfelt passion trancends music. How do you compare this music to that of today ... simple ... you cannot. I would love to give back a few years of age but the fact I was able to be there in the 60's and live in that fantastic period of time I would never trade.
Neil was at the start of his fantastic career in 1967. Listen to his voice; and listen to it through the seventies. He was fantastic and was a great showman!
Such a beautiful song...sort of a "coming of age" story, outgrowing his imaginary friend when a girl comes along, and when the girl goes, he is left alone, calling for Shilo, once again. He performed that with such emotion in this video. I have heard that he felt badly about "coming down hard on his dad" in Shilo, later in life. His dear dad died in the 1980's.
the playmate doesnt neccessarily have a gender in the song---the loss of the first love makes him long for that imaginary place within the self where he could play again and forget.
To: scarletsdad1 Great post. lol I was named after this song, and I hated this named growing up cause on the west coast there are hotels named Shilo Inns. So I was teased liked crazy from second grade on. Then that damn movie Shiloh came out about the dog, and people thought the 2 were the same, only they were idiots. cause the movie had an H on it, my name did not, so I was being referred to as a dog. As I got older I understood the line " young child with fire" n then I appreciate the song
Interestingly, Shiloh was the resting place of the ark, the first 'portable' temple in Israel after the exodus for 369 years. This was the same tabernacle used by Moses for 40 years in the desert. This was before the first permenant temple was built by Solomon in Jerusalem in 960 BCE. Not sure if there is a connection but interesting choice of a name...
@kelaEQ2 Yes,Diamond is a very common Jewish surname. He and Barbra Streisand attended the same HS.Babs had a crush on him in music class but he didn't remember her.
I was named after this song, and Shilo is about a "girl' not a boy as the beginning states by the narrator. Song lyrics clearly states "Young Girl with fire-something said she understood" one of the BEST songs out there!!! Neil rocks...
@Bballboy98798 The "She" he is refuring to in the second and third verse is his first love. Shilo was his imaginary friend, of undeturmined gender. The girl shows up after he created Shilo as a kid. The lines about how she understood and such where the connections he thought they had. The last verse is how the first love, "had other plans" then his "Dream", as he once again feels abandoned, like when he was a kid, he calls out to his childhood friend again, for confort.
@cyberties The "Girl" Neil is talking about is a seperate person, who broke his heart, from Shilo. Shilo was his imaginary friend growing up, who he could always depend on to be with him. Unlike his father or the other kids in the area. The Girl was his first love who he felt he and a connection with. She abanoned him to, wich explains the change in the final chorus, "Shilo you always came, come TODAY". It also explains why he is accually calling for Shilo.
@SweetShyx3 I get the impression, it's a dog. A female dog. When no-one else would come she came. Something made him think that she understood. That's just my thoughts.
@bobhawks You know, I really don't understand folks like you. You've made really rude and nasty comment toward me. Did you completely misunderstand the message I left? Or misunderstand the comment I was responding to? The sentences I wrote were paraphrased from the lyrics. The second and third sentences are from his lyrics. What's wrong with you? It's either an imaginary female child or a female dog.
@Delticola "Shilo" was not about the American Civil War Battle of Shiloh or the Israeli town Shilo, or a dog but was about a childhood imaginary friend.
@Delticola I don't think Shilo is a female dog. Shilo is not a female name.
It's just an imaginary friend that always loved him. But, you have a point since he says she a lot. So, it's understandable why you said that. Ignore Bob, he maybe likes the song, but is not good at hearing words in songs and understanding lyrics while listening to songs and just like people who take a few words of Born in the USA and have no clue what Springsteen is saying.
@bobhawks Did you listen to the lyrics? Neil uses the word she when referring to she. But, I am not sure what he meant in the song, but I can understand why the other poster said what she said. If you listened to the song, you wouldn't have savaged her.
angelina and brad pitt namesd their 'beautiful' offspring after some imaginary entity? wtf? shiloh is a girl in the pitt/jolie family but a male in the SONG.
Diamond was DANG good early in his career, with songs like this, "Cherry Cherry," "Brother Love," "Thank God for the Night Life," "I'm A Believer," "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," "Solitary Man," "Kentucky Woman." Terrific stuff.
Later on he went all grandiloquent on us ("Longfellow Serenade," the "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull" stuff, "Play Me," "I Am, I Said," "Longfellow Serenade"). Even later, he became downright banal, as in "Forever in Blue Jeans" --
@stevevandien So singing a heartfelt song about how you are depressed and completly lost in your life with no place you can truely call home. Which is accually how he felt at the time of writing I am, I said. Is pompous or intended to impress. Good to know you have no soul.
@kelaEQ2 What song are you talking about? Tell me which one and we will then have some basis for discussion. No soul?! Good heavens. I'd never accuse you of lacking same, so please grant me the same courtesy:). Let's respect one another enough to have a discussion about Diamond. What do you say? Best, Steve
Just more passion, grit and soul in his 60's and early 70's stuff than what followed from him. Doesn't mean he didn't do any quality work after, just that
the younger ND. is a better writer and performer.
@lancetop I agree as well! For some reason though everytime I see this video he reminds me Davy Jones. It must be the hair or the shirt or something....I dunno. I like the Monkees too so maybe because it was around the same time they were big? Who knows. Go Neil!
@Chibi1982 yeah, Davy Jones!!! I thought so too. It's everything you said, plus the way he shrugs his shoulders while he sings, and his facial expressions. Also the fact that he's so adorable. :)
I think it's normal for kids to have imaginary friends. For a little girl it could be a doll or for a boy it could be some toy action figure. As we get older we still have imaginary friends, it could be a sports figure, rock star or movie star. We think we own a piece of their soul, but we really don't.
These were the years.....for me.....1971 to 1981 that were the best.....how could I not fall in love with Neil Diamond.....I wonder how many young women were in love with him. Thank you for these videos.....I was so surprised to find them here. It was so great to step back and see him as I saw him in concert so many times......Thank you....I loved it....do you have any more than these six?
i have a dog named shilo and i love her so much!!!! she is the cutest puppy i've ever seen!! i saved her from the streets she kinda has some mental probles cuz she was abused but the best pup ever!
I named one of my beautiful Russian Black girls Shilo after this song and Neil. She is a beautiful, beautiful girl, and a Bronze Grand Champion show cat already.
My daughter always wanted a horse when she was growing up - when she finally got one she named it Shilo ........ she is now in her 40's and still listens to Neil
I agree. Neil Diamond is a larger talent than a place in the Hall of Fame could possibly contain. It would take at least a wing, or more fittingly two wings, to properly do the job. Diamond is forever.
I have read over the years that the song was about everything from an imaginary friend, a childhood sweetheart, to a dog. I suppose only Neil knows for sure!
when i was around 14 MY BROTHER GAVE ME THE ALBUM SHILO,,I FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT AMAZING VOICE THAT DAY. YES NEIL DIAMOND, YEH,IT WAS,.. @DavidLT101 Shiloh in the Bible isn't a person, it was the religious capital of the Hebrews during the time
of the Judges. Ezekiel was written centuries after that era. What translation/edition are you using that ID's
the "he" in that verse as Shiloh? Not being sarcastic, I am truly curious. Notes in my ESV ID the "he" as the
coming Messianic King, my NIV as (similarly) being Jesus.Hard to figure the Jewish Scripture ID's the
"he" as Shiloh (ND is Jewish). Also-the song's Shilo is female.

MsSexxyShi 1 year ago
Interestingly, Shiloh was the resting place of the ark, the first 'portable' temple in Israel after the exodus for 369 years. This was the same tabernacle used by Moses for 40 years in the desert. This was before the first permenant temple was built by Solomon in Jerusalem in 960 BCE. Not sure if there is a connection but interesting choice of a name...
sjwendell 1 year ago 2
@sjwendell Well consitering that Neil Diamond is a devote Jewish man, I wouldn't be suprized if there is a connection.
kelaEQ2 1 year ago
@kelaEQ2 Yes,Diamond is a very common Jewish surname. He and Barbra Streisand attended the same HS.Babs had a crush on him in music class but he didn't remember her.

I was named after this song, and Shilo is about a "girl' not a boy as the beginning states by the narrator. Song lyrics clearly states "Young Girl with fire-something said she understood" one of the BEST songs out there!!! Neil rocks...
Bballboy98798 1 year ago
@Bballboy98798 The "She" he is refuring to in the second and third verse is his first love. Shilo was his imaginary friend, of undeturmined gender. The girl shows up after he created Shilo as a kid. The lines about how she understood and such where the connections he thought they had. The last verse is how the first love, "had other plans" then his "Dream", as he once again feels abandoned, like when he was a kid, he calls out to his childhood friend again, for confort.

The guy introduces Shilo as a boy; but Neil says Shilo as her ( or is it someone else) ?? Someone please let me know.
SweetShyx3 1 year ago
@SweetShyx3 She made me smile...I think that says it.
Maybe the guy introducing the song was just stoned. Or maybe he had fantasies of it being a boy based on his own childhood.
cyberties 1 year ago
@cyberties Yeah it says she or her a lot! Mmk thank you(: My name's Shilo and I'm a girl... so I was getting annoyed if it was a boy's name.
SweetShyx3 1 year ago
@cyberties The "Girl" Neil is talking about is a seperate person, who broke his heart, from Shilo. Shilo was his imaginary friend growing up, who he could always depend on to be with him. Unlike his father or the other kids in the area. The Girl was his first love who he felt he and a connection with. She abanoned him to, wich explains the change in the final chorus, "Shilo you always came, come TODAY". It also explains why he is accually calling for Shilo.
kelaEQ2 1 year ago
@SweetShyx3 I get the impression, it's a dog. A female dog. When no-one else would come she came. Something made him think that she understood. That's just my thoughts.

bobhawks 1 year ago
@bobhawks You know, I really don't understand folks like you. You've made really rude and nasty comment toward me. Did you completely misunderstand the message I left? Or misunderstand the comment I was responding to? The sentences I wrote were paraphrased from the lyrics. The second and third sentences are from his lyrics. What's wrong with you? It's either an imaginary female child or a female dog.
Delticola 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@Delticola "Shilo" was not about the American Civil War Battle of Shiloh or the Israeli town Shilo, or a dog but was about a childhood imaginary friend.
Shilo, when I was young —
I used to call your name
When no one else would come,
Shilo, you always came
And we'd play ...
askamute 1 year ago
@Delticola I don't think Shilo is a female dog. Shilo is not a female name.
It's just an imaginary friend that always loved him. But, you have a point since he says she a lot. So, it's understandable why you said that. Ignore Bob, he maybe likes the song, but is not good at hearing words in songs and understanding lyrics while listening to songs and just like people who take a few words of Born in the USA and have no clue what Springsteen is saying.
QUINTUSMAXIMUS 1 year ago
@QUINTUSMAXIMUS Thanks for your comments.
Delticola 1 year ago
@bobhawks Did you listen to the lyrics? Neil uses the word she when referring to she. But, I am not sure what he meant in the song, but I can understand why the other poster said what she said. If you listened to the song, you wouldn't have savaged her.

Even later, he became downright banal, as in "Forever in Blue Jeans" --
stevevandien 1 year ago
@stevevandien So singing a heartfelt song about how you are depressed and completly lost in your life with no place you can truely call home. Which is accually how he felt at the time of writing I am, I said. Is pompous or intended to impress. Good to know you have no soul.
kelaEQ2 1 year ago

Who knows. Go Neil!

I think it's normal for kids to have imaginary friends. For a little girl it could be a doll or for a boy it could be some toy action figure. As we get older we still have imaginary friends, it could be a sports figure, rock star or movie star. We think we own a piece of their soul, but we really don't.
