  • Hi Ashley,

I love the music in your intro, but a whole vid does get rather repetitive!

  • Nice vid, love firesteel, have the bunker 1. Can I add something that I found useful that once, in a really wet situtation? Here it goes, anyway, lol...I shaved a small branch down to some dry stuff, made deep several slices along the grain 1st, then, very gently shaved out from there, gave me some "threads" stil a bit coarse @ that time, crush - rolled into a ball, opened for my bird's nest + the fibers were very fine, caught like magic on the 1st try...Happy moment 4 a cold, wet traveler, eh?

  • T-BAGS!!!! Genius

what about a little bit of sleeping bag lining in an emergency?

    wonder if bird feathers work!

    INSPIRED - THANKS!!!!!

  • @funkyprepper Good thinking but unfortunately feathers & sheep's wool don't work. I'm glad your enjoying our videos and finding them useful, appreciate your comments :)

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • and foor the sick tishyous

  • Nice video but....... Good god man that music is annoying !!

  • @grancucui We all have different tastes on music ;) I appreciate that. But there has been a lot more comments on this vid complimenting the music as oppose not liking it, so I think it's ok :) All the best.

  • sorry, meant to say tinder, not kindling.

  • I love fire steel, so versatile. Good to see so many different types of kindling, still seems to me that bark from the birch is best. Note, if its wet, shave the bark down then use the fire steel. Good video keep it up.

  • TEABAG!!!! SACRILEGE!!

  • What was that meth stuff?

  • @sethzky77 methylated spirit

  • @NaturalBushcraft whats the "spirit" in "Methylated Spirit"

  • one of the best tinders is dryer lint! clean out your lint trap and use that as a fire starter it works great!

  • can this stuff be lit with a lighter or a match?

  • @hlongjing Yes, absolutely.

  • nevermind... opps i found it

  • Great video... but the music is amazing, can someone direct me to the artist and the name of the song ?

  • @wescobts Spiro Music - brilliant bristol band.

  • Fantastic video. For more info on using birch bark check out my channel

  • are you a arsonist?

  • I literally sat for 10 minutes with my firesteel, trying to light birch bark shavings and peel. It wouldnt light. Then I tried natural fiber rope (for a bundle) with the birch shavings, that also did not light. What am I doing wrong?

  • @tatetalk Hard to say. Fluff up your tinder a lot. Keep your hands near the tinder when striking the steel. Either put the striker near the tinder and pull back on the steel, or put the steel on the tinder and strike from there.

Tinder is critical, though. You need an edge to catch on, something small & fluffy as much as possible.

  • @HiBrainGoodbye Alot of things can increase your chances of cancer. If your concerned about the smoke from the steel dont create a fire to start with. I can guarentee the fire smoke would be worse than the steel smoke due to the greater volume and duration.

  • haha teabag. thanks for sharing

  • One of my favourite tunes! :D

  • @HiBrainGoodbye Use the back of your knife??? Never use the blade... Um common sense here...

  • what a frightful waste of a teabag!

nice video i hadnt even thought of alcohol hand wash.

  • Love the tune

  • A sheet of A4 Pinter paper works well too.

  • @nathanshepherd1 Not really, have tried w/ tissues. Cotton works great but paper or tissues do not. Have you tried to light a fire w/ firesteel? Cotton works the best for me so I always keep it in my pack.

  • @jrsprice I have used a fire steel! I light a fire with it most days. And yes paper does work well if you are good enough with a fire steel. I've got a video up of me using paper as a tinder. Have a look.

  • @nathanshepherd1 That takes some skills sir :) ...

  • @jrsprice Thank you

  • @HiBrainGoodbye I believe your wrong about the "oxidized iron" - please show me the source information you got that from.

  • @NaturalBushcraft Firesteels are usually made out of ferrocerium, which contains iron oxide. And yes, its not very good for you, but the amounts you inhale are so miniscule it wont ever be a factor.

And he's quite right, your response was more unconstructive then his original comment.

  • Does anyone know how to make Maya dust? What kind of tree it comes from and is it the sap that makes it so flammable?

  • @paracordjunky Tip number #1 - Don't buy Maya dust in a pot. You can buy it ready made but it seems to have a shelf live (so is crap). It is a lot better to make your own Maya dust from a Maya stick (or Fat wood). I've actually made a video about it, search youtube for: "Fat Wood or Maya Sticks" and you will find another Natural Bushcraft production :)

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • @HiBrainGoodbye What are you talking about? The fumes of what? And are you talking about the Firesteel or the Tinder being wet? If your unable to structure a question or comment - don't bother posting.

  • @HiBrainGoodbye Unfortunately that's a stupid mistake - your not meant to use the cutting edge of your knife, you use the back of the blade (the spine) if it is appropriate, all you need is somewhat of a right-angle to strike against the Firesteel.

  • Y a aucun mérite à mettre du produit en plus, en survie tu n'aurais que du bois et des herbes.

  • cant wait for my firesteel , coming tomorrow getting the army one. great vid man helps me alot :) :D

  • Cat tail? Lump of cat hair? Any way I'm gonna get my firesteel tomorrow! :D

  • @TheInfidelis It's a Reed / Plant head :p

  • Sweden, you know!

what can i say, we're the best!;)

  • @swedishhunter21 If your packing an F1 I won't argue with you there ;D

    - Ash.

  • In addition to, or a substitute for cotton wool(cotton balls?) there is that good ole cloths dryer lint. It's free! A pinch or two between thumb and fore finger, add a dot of hand cleaner or a little Vaseline and there you go.

    Great vid.

  • Awesome vid I have got a fire steel but is it a flint or magnesium or what?

  • Firesteels are easy to use and are far more resilient than lighters or matches, but lighting a fire with them can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. I just struggled in the backyard for 30 minutes to get a fire going. Not easy.

  • @100trueneutral Practice & tinder preparation my friend. I used Friesteels every time I go out - but I don't purposively make things hard for myself, I do practice with natural tinders but for convenience when I'm out I carry a tiny box of cotton balls with Vaseline on them, this will take instantly you'll only have to strike once or twice. Happy fire making!

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • Love this song!

  • Got a 3 pack of those size firesteels for 10$

  • What a waste of a good tea bag

  • lol left to the website cant find it though found pic but sends me to other thing where is it goen camping in a week

  • Excellent video. I'd give you 5 stars but.... lol

  • @skimitar have you ever used a lighter that has just came out of the water? No! They don't work right away with a fire steel wet or dry it always works

  • Why don't use a lighter they are like 99 cents for a pack of 3.

  • I am curious, what did you use for the firesteels?

  • great video, I enjoyed. I did a similiar one on my page

  • grilled bear is the man

  • Using tea bags for kindling is inspired - nice one!

A cracking video - loved it.

  • @ianbcnp Glad you liked it - There's tons more useful videos on our channel, please subscribe if you haven't already! Also our NaturalBushcraft website has even more videos, articles and even a new community forum :)

Hope to see you there, all the best,

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • what is the "meths" that you lit?

  • @topguntin methylated spirits.

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • 5/5

  • 5/5

  • Quality video; educational - thanks.

  • May I suggest holding the striker (or knife) in place while you pull the fire steel backwards. You get better control over the sparks and you won't hit and tip over anything...

  • @Lazuotut i find that technique much more difficult to get a spark :(

  • Use the back of your knife next time.

  • great music, In my oppinion the birch bark is the best, it is full of oil that burns strong and well, and you can find it almost anywhere in europ and north america

  • @max465t I do like Birch Bark, however unfortunately you don't get much of it down here in Cornwall (South West) UK.

  • get a fire stone it;s Free !!!

  • lol FOR THE BRITISH!!!

  • Cattails...in my opinion, they give you the most bang for your buck. Super-dense and clean packaging!

  • where do u find cramballs ?

  • @Jack70903 On fallen Ash trees. Dead or Dying Ash will often be infected with Crampball fungi, keep an eye for those black fungi and you'll soon be seeing lots!

    - Ashley Cawley.

  • My favorite is to carry cotton balls mixed with petroleum jelly

  • @whateverujoke Well, it depends... You can buy different sizes of Firesteels, different lengths & thickness, so some will last longer than others. Common models you might find with be marked either as 12,000 strikes or 6,000 strikes and of course this will vary on your technique etc. Also, don't think that your tinder will always light first time, I know it might seem like it in this video but we're just showing quick highlights. It might take you 5 or 6 strikes depending what your using.

    - Ash

  • Love the music!!!!

  • Nice vid. I have a clone blastmatch and it works pretty well.

  • Thanks for putting the variety of tinder in one vid

    Informative and well done

    Tom

  • You really know what you are doing, excellent selection of options for people here and a few we might not have known about before.

    Thanks.

  • Good video, I enjoyed it alot. I love my firesteel

  • isn't it easier when you pull the firesteel instead of thrusting with the scraper? so that the tinder stays where you want?

  • @arnochauveau Yes, that is a good technique to use.

  • when in doubt that the hand sanitizer out lol

  • @AirsoftStaffSGT1 I just used hand sanitizer & a firesteel this weekend :)

    - Ash.

  • Only nutters bite their finger nails.

  • the crampball fungi looks like it burns like the charcloth

  • @ttpoo12 Yes much like Charcloth, Crampball will sustain itself after it has been lit. Crampballs also have a nice hard outer shell which is pretty protective of the heat, so this makes them an ideal fire-carrying tool when you find a nice large one, or you can easily transfer the ember from one to another.

    - Ash.

  • another nicely done video. this gave me a few good ideas. i'm in the US, but i still assure you that i'll only use a tea bag as a last resort.

  • Nail Biter!

  • great vid full of plenty of options.

  • @Wiegieboard Always remembering to use Tea-bags as a last resort!.. It's against British ethics to toast a tea-bag unless it's real survival ;) Cheers,

    Ashley.

  • @NaturalBushcraft

Haha! It's a good thing I'm Scottish. As well as cheering for the Germans in Soccer matches, I also get to burn tea :P

  • I bought two of these haha! An army model with black plastic handle, and one with nice oak handle.

  • Did you have to file your puukko to get it to work with the fire steel? I have a kellam puukko and it won't work with the firesteel.

  • @MrVoiceofreason123 No I didn't have to file it. A good right angle to the spine of the blade does help for using a Firesteel however it's more than likely the type of steel that is the problem, high carbon steel is the best for using with a firesteel.

  • @NaturalBushcraft Well if more carbon means better sparks then I wonder if a stainless steel knife would be the best since stainless steel has a higher carbon content than plain carbon tool steel... hmmm

  • @NaturalBushcraft Ok, I realized the problem haha. A while ago I tried using the knife on a piece of quartz, so I ruined the 90 degrees angles on the spine. There is still one near the tip that works fine though. In a real emergency I would use the blade anyway if I had too.

  • Great vid. Goes to show you don't need to go crazy making all sorts of crazy super tinders, you can use all sorts of things

  • cool music man!!!

  • well done

  • nice vid

  • Great video man. I have been having a hard time finding tinder that will lite with my firesteel. This was very helpful.

  • @kirchemgriffith No problem, I hope it helps! And remember that this video is made to be a highlights type video with the footage condensed down, what im getting at is not everything lights first strike!.. Don't get disheartened if it take a good few strikes just have some patience and check your tinder is prepared correctly. All the best,

    Ashley.

  • question, is there any type of tinder (besides char cloth) that can catch a yellowish spark from a traditional flint (well techinically i use quartz) and steel kit? i have yet to find any naturally available material that i can get to catch.

  • @MysteryMan159 I have managed to get some un-treated amadou to catch a spark from a traditional flint & steel, however it did take me a long while. Once lit, char'd the edge a bit and then put it out I found it a lot easier to catch the chared area more easily the next time. You can prepare amadou in different ways which will aid you, I've done a video on how to gather amadou, search for "How to Gather Amadou Tinder"

  • I like the cattail idea especially! And the tea bag- I'd never thought of that one.

  • what music track is that? i love it!

  • This was a great video :D

  • wow amazing!

  • Glad you enjoyed it :)

  • great vid by the way. quite helpful

  • whats meth? (your version)

  • Thanks for doing the teabag for us Brits :D

  • A pleasure. And quite comically it's probably worth remembering as we Brits always have some on us hey! :D

  • lol hes cooking meth?

  • Care to add something that makes sense?

  • NOOOOOO !.... Not the F***ing tea bag.. :D

  • Nice one...handcleaner was cool...thanks for sharing.

  • @kezzer2 Glad you liked it! Remember if you like our videos please Subscribe and let your friends & family know of NaturalBushcraft. All the best, Ashley.

  • Very good video - I never thought of using a teabag!

  • i dont know about u but i have now scout model and i make fire with 2 spark on a real wood

  • great vid. My army model is in the mail now.

  • Cotton wool and vaseline lasts 6-8 minutes!

    great video thanks

  • cotton wool and vaseline ey? I'll try that, I just have a little bit of a cotton wool in my coat pocket but I'll try it with a bit of vaseline too

  • hey i bought fire steel and i cant get it to light anything it sparks though should i use a serated edge ? please give me tips thanks

  • You don't have to use a serated edge at all, for example the spine of a knife (that's the back edge with no blade) is just fine for using with a Firesteel, typically the spine of your blade will have a right-angle to the steel and will work well. It's worth noting that all knives will work, some might have a rounded off spine or be stainless steel or something. High carbon steel will work best. Also make sure your tinder is fibrous, shred toilet paper and start with that. Good Luck!

  • @NaturalBushcraft And to add to the serrated fact. After multiple uses, the steel will start to wear unevenly. I personally try to strike my firesteel evenly, rotating it about a centimeter every time.

  • I've just noticed I made a mistake in my comment above, it should be "It's worth noting that NOT all knives will work,"

  • what are you trying to light?

  • Excellent

  • Great Video.

  • cat-tails never work for me any idea why?

  • Not sure, I've only had two but they've both worked well for me. The local enviroment and age my play a part. Out of interest what type of spark are you using? A orange one from traditional flint and steel or white-hotter one from a Firesteel or magnesium?

  • I think it's because of the age of the plant and i'm using a firesteel. thanks taking the time to answer

  • hey cotton butts are the best and only one little spark doees it try it out man

  • dont forget steel wool

  • yes it is with elecric current not firesteel, respect tintin

  • burnt tea bags smell like dope

  • Brilliant Thanks

  • yeah man by far the greatest, cotton wool and grease ace vid peace out

  • nice bit of 4 star that'll do it (:^D)

  • great video! the cramp ball seemed to work nicely

  • Thanks. I really like Crampballs, I think they're my favourite of all the tinders shown in the vid.

  • great video mate 5/5

  • Awsome video! keep them comin'!

  • I'll have to give some of those a try :)

I have yet to try cat tail.

(I just got into bushcraft recently)

  • Cat-tail is very quick burning, probably best mixed up with other tinder really. Good to hear your getting into Bushcraft, checkout the NaturalBushcraft website :)

  • your welcome these are great videos

  • 5/5

  • Thanks deedpole! I cant believe how fast people watch these videos, there's like 10 watches in the instant its up!
