  • wow, he pissed him off twice...oh wait, wait, nope, make that three times....you are a talented man, Mr. Hobson

  • OMGaryOldman, i think Hobson is the only person who can take credit for getting on Data's 'last nerve'

  • Data was not supposed to get angry...he has no feelings....

  • @Exosquad11 - He was taking after Picard, who does have emotions. Data considers him to be like a father figure/mentor to him.

  • "I understand your concerns. Request denied." Hah, I love that!

  • All you saying shit about Hobson can never be fit to lead as captain.

  • If I ever served in starfleet, I'd gladly serve under the command of Captain Data.

  • he he he he who's yer daddy!

  • That first officer should feel lucky to find himself under Data's command. I wonder how things would have turned out if someone like Worf were sent to command USS Sutherland instead. By the time the mission is over, there is not going to be much remaining pieces left over from Mr. Hobson. :P

  • "Mr. Hobson, it is inappropriate for you to determine a course of action without consulting your Commanding Officer." Data should remind Riker of that ...

  • Request denied! PWND

  • Lt. Cmdr Hobson is an asshole!

  • "request denied"

  • Data, you were awesome!

  • ..... FIRE!!!

  • Around 1:15 Data: "I understand your concern sir... request denied"... (then after this he no longer refers to hopsins by his last name, but instead by the term... b***)

around 1:44 Data: "you've taken the tourpedo and phaser control units offline"... "b***, it is innapropriate to take any actions without consulting your commanding officer"

  • Super Awesome Data(Spiner) Coolness!! Wish they had more moments like this! Data should have had more moments of prejudice overcome.

  • Is it just me or did Data sound VERY odd when he said "all stop".

  • Why does LtCmdr Hobson have 3 pips and Data only has 2? Doesn't that mean Hobson out ranks Data? Why are they both Lt Commanders?

  • @daveenterpriseptyltd Both Hobson and Data have to full pips and one black one, indicating both are lt. commanders. Data outranks Hobson in this episode because he's the captain and Hobson is the first officer. Once the episode is over, Data doesn't outrank Hobson anymore when he goes back to the Enterprise to resume his duties as operations officer.

  • @ryhoyarbie Yeah I realize the pips are identical now, it's just that in one brief moment in the scene it looked like as if Hobson had 3 pips due to lighting issues. It seems as if the one pip that is ment to be just a holow pip with a gold outline and a dark center was momentarilly a full pip reflecting light. Either the make up artist stuffed up the uniform in one brief scene take before editing, or it was lighting... watch the clip closely youll see what i mean.

  • 5:23 she is back from the dead as a romulan

  • @samueldavs Nope, she is yar's daughter. Reality changes to an alternate when the enterprise c comes through a warm hole, yar lives, when she finds out through Guinan that she died a meaningless death in the real universe she transfers to the enterprise c, which returns to the past, where yar is captured. She marries a Romulan and has a child, yar tries to escape, but the child realises this and helps her mother get recaptured, yar is executed, and the child grows to hate the federation.

  • Great scene and great episode!

  • 5 People got their Request Denied

  • Wow, for an "emotionless" android, data displayed anger at that bitchy commander hopsins!

  • around 5:58 Data: "i'd like to present myself for disciplinary action, though the result of my actions did prove favorable... I didn't lay down the law heavy enough on one of my officers"

Picard: "the saying 'I was just following orders has been used to justify too many mistakes of the past', nicely done"

Data: um.. no no, I would rather just speak to mr. hopsins in person again... to clear up this matter

    Picard: by all means

    minutes lator

    hopsins:i'm so sorry sir i...

    Data: it's time 2die

  • You know Data is TOO Cool. And you say his emotion chip is not installed. :)

  • I always enjoyed the character of Data. This is one of the more memorable episodes I remember.

  • No Data sadly wasn't able to feel or emit actual emotion at this point. But! He had full knowledge of the human psyche and was a wonderful actor. So it'd make sense that he could at least portray himself as being angry to get results.

  • Who here wants to bitch-slap Lt. Cmdr Chris Hobson ?

  • @DOWSOE I wouldnt bitch slap him. I'd choose an old school punishment which is technically still on the Starfleet books, though never used: A good old fashioned flogging. A few dozen lashes on the grating on the observation deck would work. I'm sure a cat o nine tails can be replicated.

  • @DOWSOE-- I feel the same, only cause he resembles so much like ..David Miscavige the commanding leader of the church of Scientology.

  • Everywhere I have worked whether it be a boss or a junior there has always been a person just like this guy!

  • I Would Have Bitch Slapped His Ass

  • Captain Data for the win.

  • @kakashi76767 Right!!!!

  • After this event i think they should have at least one android serving on every starship just like aliens and one full emh hologram doctor...

  • 5 people got their request denied!

  • DATA: "Shut the ---- up and get your ass back in line or you will be summarily executed!"

  • 5 people had their request denied.

  • @atomikus37 If you want to get politically pedantic about it, he didn't destroy them or do serious damage because it would have started an all out confrontation between the Romulans and the Federation. IIRC properly this was during the whole political intrigue in the Klingon empire so they didn't need the Romulans on their ass on top of that.

  • Comment removed

  • wow, Data has his emotion chip in this episode or what? (I don't remember very well)

  • @msinvincible2000 When Data saw how out of hand his XO was getting, I think he tried to see how Captain Picard would act and imitated it. I imagin Picard would sound very pissed off if Riker acted up on the bridge during a crises.

  • @Squibblings agreed.....

  • @msinvincible2000

No. I think he is simulating anger. He says many times that he doesn't have emotions in these two episodes. I think.

  • @Zoiros85

He wasn't angry. he was stern. His mannerism reminded me more of Picard. No doubt Data has taken much influence on Command from watching Picard.

  • I'd like to see a Klingon ship counselor.

  • @Mayokitty7 I can just hear that too:

Patient: "Counsellor, I have these bad dreams..."

Klingon Counsellor: "Bah dreams! You have to rip the heart out of those bad dreams and eat them while drinking a whole barrel of bloodwine. Then you have to battle your way through a million enemies and drink the blood of a ferocious beast and wear the head as a trophy. Then you will have no bad dreams then. Be a warrior you puny human!"

  • @Mayokitty7 they slap you around and throw you out. you know a helpfull hand

  • Data maybe an android with no emotions but you can clearly see his first officer was pissing him off.

  • Its a Nebula class ship, u can see it at 2:46 and 4:12

  • Its a Nebula class ship, u can see it at 2:46

  • I always thought Data was a perfect commander. Simply perfect. Should have become captain years ago. I was always annoyed by people (mostly SF admirals, enlightened as they are) saying he lacks some "human skills" or rather. Well, he is NOT human, he doesn't have to be like human. Why should he? He doesn't have emotions? Neither do Vulcans. Why humnas always want everybody be like them, laugh at their jockes and play football. Data is not human- he is better. Just an opinion..

  • @inesxenia Vulcans DO have emotions, it's just that they're so volatile they have to be self-trained from a young age to suppress them.

  • @inesxenia

I imagine Data would do very well on a Vulcan ship.

  • @rkyeun He's even better than the Vulcans.

  • I understand your concerns. Attempting to give a damn..................process timed out.

  • Mr. Data Should have beamed that insubordinate fuck into outter space!

  • man data just is so.....so.....AWESOME!!! dang he just takes control.

  • Data rocks and Hobson is a insubordinate punk...

That said, Data did do one thing wrong. Rather than dismissing Captain Picard with a "Standby Captain" he probably should have said something like, "Captain I believe I have found a way to detect the Romulans and force them to stand down." Undoubtedly, Picard would have agreed to let Data proceed since he well knows Data's abilities. That would have prevented some of the tension created by Dobson questioning Data's disobeying a direct order.

  • That 1st officer should of been relieved a long time ago after questioning and delaying every order after they were giving. In the real Navy, if that ever happend on a ship, pack your bags

  • Data is THE BEST!

  • It IS rather strange how meteoric some characters were in their rank climbing than others. It took Data 27 years to become a Lt Cmdr, but Riker was already in the running for his own vessel after only 12 years and Laforge got two promotions from Lt JG to Lt Cmdr in 2-3 years!

  • @ShadowSonic2 lol true!

  • 1:16 Data: "Oh, it's on bitch..."

  • LOT OF ODD TENSION ON THIS SHIP !

  • 1:20 his way of saying "SILENCE MEATBAG!"

  • The Romulan fixed that . Tackion signature.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Ellis Dewald!

  • @rmsolympic1

Here are 3 movies that Brent Spiner is in:

    1. Out To Sea

    2. Introducing Dorothy Dandridge

    3. Master Of Disguise

    4. Manhunt For Claude Dallas*

(You can look up this movie on youtube. Brent is very young in this movie. He is in the 1st half of the movie. This was right before he started on ST:TNG.)

Unfortunately he's not in a whole lot of movies, because of 7 years on ST and then 4 ST films after that.

That's about all I can recommend. Hope it helps!

    Happy New Year!!!

  • @datalorelover You forgot about Independence Day and Dude Where's my Car? :D

  • I imagine 7 minutes is literally the amount of time it would take to complete a mission if Data was put in charge

  • Data would make an awesome Captain. Why he was never made Captain before now is beyond me.

    Data rules.

Brent Spiner was born to play the role of Data. No one else could have played this role any better than him.

If it wasn't for the character of Data, Star Trek: TNG would not have been as popular as it was. End of story.

  • @datalorelover Yes, data is awesome, can u recommend great videos or movies with him in it?

  • This was an awesome episode.

  • 4.44 DO IT BITCH!

  • "I understand your concerns...request denied." - PWNED!

  • @mordanai one of the best moments in all of STNG!

  • I understand your concerns. But since you are full of yourself and I am awesome your request is DENIED! :P

  • @ClipHunter4 actually it's only the US Military and those who take their lead from it who routinely call LTCDR's by 'CDR' or LTCOL's by 'COL'. UK, Australia and NZ use the full rank at all times with a strict distinction between LTCDR and CDR, etc.

The term 'Captain' applies to any ship, regardless of the rank of the CO.

  • fuck u crew fuck u

data is fully ready for the authority

  • @ClipHunter4 Weren't the limitations overcome thanks to the emotion chip in Star Trek: Generations?

  • I really belive Data is one of my all-time favorite characters from any show!

  • I'm blind or at 1:56 Hobson wears Commander insignia :-)

  • @Skabiczewski Reflection of the light perhaps? I thought the same thing. That's why I don't particularly care for the intermediate rank pips.

  • @Skabiczewski You're blind. It's clearly two solid pips and one hollow pip.

  • Id trust data more than humans to be quiet honest

  • The Romulans appear to be utterly stupid and senseless with Sela in command.

  • Data should have his own command.

  • "Request denied."

    OWNED

  • It's funny that Data chastises his first officer for taking the photons and phasers offline without first consulting him, yet he takes action without first consulting Captain Picard.

  • @terminat1

That is because being captain of a ship is pretty close to being god. Everything on the ship must go through the captain.

  • @terminat1 He's Captain of that vessel. He is the supreme and ultimate authority on board.

  • @tdog652041 Agreed. But he is disobeying Picard's orders without first consulting him, even though Captain Picard is head of the fleet, and therefore Data's commander. That would be like Picard disobeying Admiral Smith's order to go to Vulcan, and he goes to Risa instead. He'd be in the wrong, even though he is the final authority on the Enterprise.

  • @terminat1 well, Picard did defy his superiors on other ocassions, like entering the fight in Sector 001 against the orders of Admiral Hayes, and when he entered the Briar Patch...

  • @jadephyre Certainly he did. But he was wrong on those occasions, and could have been punished, had the admirals found it fit to do so.

  • LIke Picard said. Nicely done! Thank you for posting. : )

  • The ship Data is commanding is similar in size and design to the Enterprise-D. Why didn't they just redress the Ent-D bridge set instead of using this tiny bridge set?

  • Lt. Commander Hobson is Data's Bitch!

  • "Your service record shows that you would perform that job adequately."

    YES, YES, YES, YES.

Also, the angry "DO IT!" is magnificent.

  • Data is so my moms fav lol... I am more a picard girl myself ;)

  • @GUAlliance Hahaha, well both of them are my top fav characters! You both have good taste. XD

  • @GUAlliance Data and Riker are my favorites.

  • I understand you concen, REQUEST DENIED.lol I love Data. lol

  • Data would have made the perfect captain. There is no one I would have felt more comfortable having in charge if I was on that ship. He could have handled the Enterprise all on his own. In fact, he kinda did once or twice.

  • That 2nd in command officer is somewhat justified to be skeptical. From everything Ive seen of the show Data lacks several insights into "human" behaviour that could very well prove indispensable to a leader.

  • @rbairos1 how? data quite literally saved the entire enterprise dozens of times. in measure of a man he even busts out a plaque with all of starfleet's highest honors. which insights would he really be lacking?

  • @terrasweet The show writers makes sure to hilight the fact he lacks emotions, and is often perplexed by the behaviour of other humanoids. A skill other captains would take for granted, and use to their advantage when trying to internally model the intentions/behaviour of other humanoids.

  • @rbairos1 well the captain isn't the only person aboard a vessel who can size up opponents via the view screen. as for guessing moves/intentions of the enemy, data models those all the time; he's usually the first to make hypotheses in the show, and as picard often says, his hypotheses are rarely wrong.

  • @terrasweet Ultimately we're discussing a fictional character, but the writers do often make sure to write him ultimately puzzled by things like humour, so again, hes lacking some basic insights other captains would take for granted. That and the fact that hes the only one of his kind, its right to be skeptical.

  • Why is the first officer doing all this stuff? He's doing the jobs of everyonebut the helmsman.

  • I like how Data's gaze, complete with anger, is extended slightly more so than it would have been otherwise had he not learned those human emotions, at 03:50.

  • This is the second of three times Data owns Sela. The third if with Spock on Romulus, and the first was the time they tried to brainwash Geordi, it was her order. So basically if your Romulan stay the hell away from Data.

  • "I understand your concerns. Request denied." Owned that white nigger.

  • "highlight any tachyon signatures which show subspace inertial displacement"

  • All Federation ships proced at maximum warp to Gamma Eridon. Not so hot girls there, we hear.

All stop. There has to be a latent hot one around here, somewhere, who is a virgin, yet not a prude. Maybe even a Virgin and a virgin, yet not a prude? Screw going to Gamma Eridon.

  • I've been searching for the daughter of the Devil himself

I've been searching for an angel in white

I've been waiting for a woman who's a little of both

And I can feel her but she's nowhere in sight

  • @brianwesley28

Humans are not so much different than Data is. As an analogy for sexual attraction, we all have our own programming sequences in our DNA, as well as different astrological influences. Those things are kind of like computer programs and code. I'm programmed like a supercomputer to like extremely hot girls...extremely hot and extremely inexperienced girls. It's just Basic.

  • Data is the best!

  • getting tears in my eyes from this! Data's the best!

  • @TheMacciz I know how you feel as silly as it is. I FULLY understand!

  • The fact that they never promoted Data to full commander during the series indicates that Starfleet was a more intolerant and close-minded institution than its members choose to believe.

  • @Borastheantichrist Unfortunately, yeah... but at least he got promoted in one of the comics. :) That's at least an improvement...

  • Are you referring to the comic that gave the backstory to the movie from 2009? It was cool seeing him as captain. If there is another comic with Data getting a promotion, I would like to know about it.

I did like Chain of Command though since Data got to wear command red for a while.

  • @SoulReaperRukia Yeah, but it took him dying to make captain!

  • @SoulReaperRukia well I think the reason why Data was never promoted to full commander because he's next in line to be first officer after Riker. Since Picard was never promoted to Admiral and Riker turned down his own command to remain the first officer, Data couldn't really move up in rank.

  • @Borastheantichrist Well it's not like they promoted anyone else in the series (TNG). All started with the same rank they ended with, except for Wesley and Troi (bridge officer). Okay, and Worf too, but that was only after the movie.

  • @JackMcPhee

Worf started as a Lieutenant Junior Grade and received promotion to Lieutenant around season 3 and then to Lt. Commander in Generations.

Geordi went from Lieutenant Junior Grade to Lieutenant to Lt. Commander during the series

  • @Borastheantichrist no it shows the makers of the series were more intolerant than starfleet ever could be.

  • @Borastheantichrist While I would of loved to see Data to be promoted during the series, just because he wasn't doesn't mean that Starfleet is close-minded. There were many other members of the crew who were never promoted during the series but may have been promoted at a later date. The same could be said of Data. They may never make him captain of the Enterprise, but his giving him his own ship, definitely a possibility.

  • @gokuo64 Yeah, but that series had such a severe case of political correctness that its panties were always in a bind. Virtually every admiral was a chick and Deanna and Beverly were promoted, even though they weren't originally command officers. STTNG just had to show how "enlightened" it was. Even Worf got promoted, even though Data, who had served AT LEAST as well, was in the service longer.

  • @Borastheantichrist In the future Data is the captain of the enterprise.

  • @ScardTurtl

Before or after he was blown up in Nemesis?

    Hate that movie :)

  • @Borastheantichrist

voyager (ack!) explores that issue with the doctor

  • @Borastheantichrist He got a posthumous two rank promotion after he "died" in the last movie, although I'm not sure if that's cannon or not.

  • @kmcquiggin1 No, he was already commander in Nemesis, he was actually going to be Picard's new First Officer after Riker left.

  • @Borastheantichrist I agree. He should've been promoted a long time ago.

  • @Borastheantichrist No it doesn't. You can't really mess too much with with the main cast. That's like saying Starfleet is racist because Geordi was still chief engineer on the Enterprise after twenty years.

  • @Borastheantichrist maybe true even in the 24 Century their are preducie's but people or crew members still get transferred. Riker turn down Command mabe Picard could of ask for an early retirement. just a thought. ( its a t.v. show ) but fun to think about

  • @Borastheantichrist By that same token, that can be considered why Harry Kim remained an ensign for 7 years on voyager. I prefer to think that data, like Riker, turned down promotion opportunities (off screen) in order to stay on the Enterprise (and the show), and wait for the chance for promotion while remaining onboard. Which is what happens as he becomes Picards first officer in nemesis and eventually Captain in the comic.

  • @Borastheantichrist He was temporarily promoted in a few episodes. "Gambit" comes to mind.

  • @NecessaryTruths That was just an acting role though as the captain and first officer were gone at the time. He was still wearing the Lt. Commander insignia, unlike Riker who wore the captain's insignia in Best of Both Worlds Part II.

  • @pfiberoptik Q fucks with everybody who wears a starfleet commander uniform. First Picard, then Riker, then Sisko, then Janeway. I'd be bored as shit to if I had the boundless and eternal powers of a God, but no one to worship me and pray in my name.

  • @feralbigdog yup. That's the only reason why he was so pissy. The whole android drama was just a disguise for him to circumvent Data's authority.

  • With the host of episodes where the captain and crew get all fucked up with some alien mind control or parasites and he has to bail their shit out, I think Data should have assumed command of the Enterprise on the first episode.

At least Q wasn't always fucking with him like Picard.

  • Data lays down so much ownage in this episode.

  • @jpmoney184 I'm just saying. Dr. Crusher outranks Data. If the writers wanted to outline a proper chain of command. Data, as second officer, should outrank both Crusher and Troi, but he never did.

  • data showed anger when he threatened to relieve mr. hobson of his duties. he should have kicked his arse.

  • I miss TNG and the great performances from Mr Stewart and Mr Spiner**==

  • I never understood why Data was 3rd officer of the enterprise. He is capable yes. However,Dr. Crusher outranks him, and Councelor Troi was his same rank until she was promoted to Full Commander. Watching this I can see why. In Hobson's defence, I don't think its fair to force a Lieutenant Commander to work under another Lieutenant Commander. The Admiral must have been itching for a testosterone match. Or in Data's case synthetitosterone.

  • @beaugar22 I think it has to do with qualifications. As I understand it, Data is the third in line thats qualified to command. Troi did take command be default in "Disaster" and didn't know what was going on. Similar to how commanders in the USN's carrier wings don't have operational control over the ship, the XO of the ship does, and how ship's chaplains are officers, but don't perform command duties on the ship. Both are officers, just not command level.

  • In the military today an officer of one rank can have a subordinate of the same rank. Usually, it's a matter of seniority, but sometimes it's a matter of specialized training.

Crusher and Troi weren't command officers, their ranks indicated greater training/experience within their fields and therefore they wouldn't ordinarily be put into a situation requiring Command style training and experience.

  • In my opinion, I don't think Hobbson felt to keen on the idea of serving under a peer (same rank) I think he uses Data's artificial intelligence as a pretext to serve under a full Commander or Captain, as opposed to a Lieutenant Commander wearing an operations uniform. I would have felt slighted too.

  • it seems to me that hobson was just mad that HE didnt get to command the ship

  • In the Star Trek Online Era, Data is the commander of the Enterprise-E.

    Guess he had the stuff.

  • I would love to see a Klingon counselor :P

  • Data is enormously sexy in command. I love when he barks "Do it!" and "Fire!". Emotion? or just a programmed variance taking into consideration an increased auditory command can create a more pronouced point for a desired reaction? Trek & Data rule.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  • Comment removed

  • @MetalKittyOTF Or, maybe Data was suppressing an anomalous urge to hang his foot up Hopson's ass.

  • @MetalKittyOTF Agreed. Data is soo teh sexy in a position of authority :D

  • @primasylph Remember....he is fully funtional...in multiple techniques....rofl

  • Thanks for posting. I just love that Data gets to be in command. :D Plus seeing Sela is bonus. :D

  • Pure quality. This is what Star Trek is about. You'll find a similar attempt at "insubordination" or challenge to the chain of command in the "Star Trek" 2009 abomination. It failed to make an impact. Just like the movie. Unless you consider the impact of the Big Explosions(TM). There were plenty of those. Sadly, that's about all there was.

  • @bellerophon602 oh no they also had Chris Pine in his underwear and Quinto making out with the hot chick and some kid going insane in his stepfather's car! Those things were always missing from the Star Trek movies ya know. ***huge load of sarcasm***

  • Possibly the best scene of TNG.

  • The only reason I like this ep is because of theses scene right here. Dates taking command is the most priceless jewel in the ST:TNG universe. That crap-head needed to be put in his place so bad!! >:|

Thanks for putting these up, SRU. :)

  • @mtrekdata42 who? picard and riker are both cool

  • @buggyboo81 LOL, oh no, I meant the fing-ding "first officer" on Data's ship. XD

  • Not sure if someone mentioned this but... Hobson's elbow is on the terminal.. Wouldn't he idk accidently overload the secondary gyrodyne propulsion matrix or something.. I mean its a big elbow.. Or do terminals have a keypad lock like phones do ? =P

  • It seems as if the elbow itself is leaning on an intersection between two panels.

BTW: we obviously suggest here that a certain impulse and pressure are the activating forces with those terminals like the touch-screens we know from our mobile phones. What if these terminals are activated by finger-pressure only ? (i.e.: focussed/local pressure-surge plus electric field of the skin)

    In that case, an
