If you watch some of the videos of girls/women fighting on YouTube, they will almost always grab the other girls hair which is a big mistake. The technique I learned at my dojo, is to trap the opponent's hand, twist and apply pressure to the corner of their wrist.
Thanks for putting this on. I like this kind of instructional videos. I do karate myself (only twice a week though), and I find that videos like this one are a great addition to my lessons.
how does this help women if they were being grabbed behind from their ponytails? most women in america dont have short hair like this woman...and the fact that what if the attacker is stronger us women can b easily taken down if not strong enough
These specific techniques are for the situation shown. The same principles can be applied to the hair being grabbed from behind. The important lesson is to not try to pull away from the grab but try to secure it, keep on balance and a good base. See some of my replies to comments below. This is 2 possible techniques for a given situation. These techniques are based on leverage not strength. It is impossible for me to create a video that would cover all scenarios.
@BrendaLatitia Common sense defense applies to a hair pull from behind. I don't know if you've ever done any defense techniques when a person grabs you from behind, but they could be applied here as well. I'd start with a few back elbows, then bring one arm up, turn, and joint lock the elbow.
We praticed some of the same defenses against a hair grab; however, when the larger a student grabbed with real strength, the female black belt student struggled greatly in an effort to break the hold. Our female black belt student could have got taken to the ground in a real fight.
There are several factors to be considered here. One is that Size and strength do matter. Situation and intent will dictate the most appropriate response. Was the larger student aware of the technique that she was going to do? Was the female willing to hurt the attacker by blowing out his knee, scratching, gouging eyes, groin strikes, etc to distract him and use the technique. continued-
-continued. The attacker may have the element of surprise, rage, effected by a Drugs or alcohol. The victim is usually going to be at a disadvantage off the bat. I make no claims that any technique is 100% effective 100% of the time. However, the more one practices techniques and does realistic sparring the better off they'll be.
I don't know the name in English, but can you get little chopped-up pieces of rubber tires they send to recycling in your country? Buy some sacks, depending on he size of the mat.
Make like a box or "container" and fill it up. It should be thick and dense. Then get a plastic cover like the huge ones trucks use and find a way to secure it on (with pins and screws). Make sure the edges are soft (don't want to hit wood). Sorta like that. HTH.

If being totally submissive isn't a viable option, any technique is better than no technique :)

Thanks for making these videos. I hope you get more attention which you deserve.
My friends and I want to practice throws, but we don't have money for a mat. Do you have any suggestions on making a good homemade mat?
Thanks.
