2nd part is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Turkish March
and it needs to be excercised a lil' bit more:P and it is not hard to play whitout eyes, cuz this man too, in the first part NEVER looked at the balalaika .
I love this! Are you actually Russian? (Your profile states you're in Germany, just curious) I have adored the balalaika since I was little, I would love to learn to play someday. Is it a simple instrument to learn?
He plays a couple of popular russian folk songs and some other things I cannot name but that I find strangely familliar. The classical tune he plays blindfolded is the 11th piano sonata by W.A. Mozart.
If you can't find strings. Get a bicycle's break wire and untwist it, it's made of thin strings, use three of them on your Balalaika. I even put those strings to my new Balalaika, play it for nine years now and it sounds better to me.
It depends on what kind it is as far as I know, all balalaikas from piccolo to the largest bass have metal strings except from the balalaika prima that can have 2 nylons 1 steel or just 3 steel.
@Cosmickon. The highest string is steel. It is an A off a tenor banjo or a mandolin. The other two strings are the top E strings off a classical guitar. They are tuned to the same note, and made of nylon; they used to be made of gut. Soviet factory balalaikas were made with three metal strings because nylon was hard to get in the Soviet Union.
Balalaikas can be got from Musical Instruments Of Quality (if you are in the UK, that's where I got mine from). For free lessons type 'learn balalaika' into Google - they're not too hard to find! Good luck, from the Deco Gecko.
well i looked into it a bit and decided to buy one.. got one for $300 from a site called "lark in the morning" cant wait to play it! still waiting for it to come.. found some sites on how to learn, and since i play the guitar it shouldnt be to hard.. but i guess we'll see what comes of it.. hopfully i'll be able to play as good as this guy someday :P
I'd encourage you to Google to find the closest Russian Folk Orchestra near you and join if it is feasible.
I got to play in a concert where the first piece here was played by Emanuel Sheynkmann, a balalaikist who had his own TV show on an All-Union channel in the old Soviet Union.
pretty cool....
