The Carpenter's version doesn't even compare to the original. Such a beautiful song! I can't wait till the day I see those "Honolulu City Lights" for the first time. My goal is to make it over to Hawaii via cruiseship before my 55th birthday.
How can I forget a place we lived for so long or transited through on our way to Guam where we lived for almost as long. I cry every time I hear this song. Mahalo and Dankulo si zu'us malo for posting this song
@coldfeatband. Have a great time. Breath deeply, see much. A friend of mine just spent two weeks at home on vacation and wrote eloquently on Facebook about what Hawai`i means to her. If you would like to see it, send an email address to: hawaiigrown@comcast.net
A friend just put this on my wall. He knew it would make me homesick. I wonder if he knew how many memories it would trigger of my emotions when we first heard C&K sing it 35 years ago. Every picture that appears during the song is a scene that is etched in my memory. I am forever grateful. Me ke aloha pau`ole to everyone who holds Hawai`i in their heart.
@kikananihanai My parents took us to Hawaii on vacation for 4 yrs in a row back in the late 70s. This song brings back some of the best memories of my childhood ... & the photos - I'm almost there & can almost smell the flowers & the sea air. It's 3 minutes & 40 seconds of Heaven...
I love this song; I heard it for the first time watching the 2010 Honolulu City Lights Christmas parade online. It was on my mind when I left HNL after flying into town for the 2011 Great Aloha Run. It's hard to leave such a beautiful place. That's why it's "bringing me back again" for the Fourth of July. Lord willing, I plan to permanently move to Hawaii after I graduate from college in 2012.
I miss my a'ina too and this song makes it tough. I'm about to say, F* it, leave the mainland and go surf and sit on the beach for the rest of my life.
this song was popular when i visited last. i cried. i wonder how many other cultures weep at the thought of leaving, feel the pull on your heart from the land.
I am not from Hawaii but everytime I am there I feel like I am home. I was stationed in Pearl Harbor from 1974 -1976 but I did not appreciate it. I could kick myself for that attitude! I believe the Aloha spirit is inside me even though I am not a local. I am going to get back to Hawaii someday because that is where I want to spend my last days, though I want those days to be far in the future :)
I live in NYC now and this song brings me back to Waipahu. Many good times 4 wheeling around Kaena Point.....I shall always hold my ohana close and dear...
I saw them with my dad at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1975. This song brings tears to my eyes. My dad does not have much longer to live. Thanks for bringing back happier memories to me.
in 1974 i was coming home. pau da army, heading home yeah. we left l.a. and was late after noon and i was beat. we got close to hawaii and i was getting happy cause i was coming home. we rounded daimond head and the capt. put on this song. was tru okagood kine feeling seeing the lights. mahalo bradas.

@ikaikajedi I echo your feelings. I went to high school there, Radford, and have been back three times since. Going back for my 50th high school reunion in September. The islands never leave your heart. Another great Beamer Brothers song is Only Good Times. It is kind of our class song.
Would love to live there oneday.

For Susan Marie LaVallee 1950-2011 and to all who past earlier. Oahu, rest in His spirit of light and in the palm of His hands. By ©susanmarielavallee_2011 "I never went to heaven not that I recall, but in a dream or so it seemed, no ceiling and no wall."
