well, your reply mostly missed my point. I am not much interested in the movie itself. What I want to point out is that unlike some people seem to believe, Ming dynasty was not doing much favor when its government deployed 50 thousand troops during Japanese invasion.
It certainly was not a humanitarian mission, of which purpose is to 'rescue' helpless Koreans; it was self defense on China's part. The whole reason why the war broke out was because Korea refused to make ways for Japanese troops to invade China. Ming government did not act out of some sympathy; it was acting upon its best interest. Some people think making movies such as this is like betraying our savior or something, and well, that's not the case at all.
In my opinion, it's just a movie. It takes historical fact and adds work of fiction with some wishful thinking. That's what people do when people make movies.

And their four parties fought for power so politically Korea is not stable too. And most cities are with guard at allThey were caught off guard so their troops are not well formed. One more thing is that Japanese actually have pretty advanced weapons from Portugese, so i don't think Korea have the power to defeat Japanese at that time.
That is arguable. At the time Japanese troops invaded Korea most most of military forces in Korea, except for a handful of naval force, were out of shape. They were caught off guard, and they were incapable of organize defense accordingly. That much is true.
But attributing Japan's success early in the war to superior weaponry is, shall I say, controversial. Muskets are notoriously inaccurate. They have much shorter effective range and firing rate compared to bows and arrows. They indeed were armed with muskets, but that gave them only partial advantage, when other factors are taken into account. Korean navy was perfectly comfortable with utilizing artillery weapons aboard their ships, which Japanese navy had not yet achieved.
All in all, it was a difficult fight for Koreans who were caught with their pants down, but they were certainly not clueless. Even when Ming troops were deployed, they did not function effectively, and in one occasion Korean forces were deserted by Ming troops while they were fighting Japanese troops to recover the capital (and without Ming's help, they succedded).
but muskets have a faster speed you have to take into account. Accuracy actually does not affect that much when big army encounters a big army. And i don't know about the effectiveness of Ming troops, but i know that Ming actually have their own disasters in their country, and they lost many army on the way to Korea, due to illness, ambush, and frequent rains.Jap actually sat down and try to negotiate when ming army came, they asked for the west of korea, which is actually rejected by ming.
at 18th century standard, muskets had a firing rate of about 3 shots per minute. the most significant advantage of musket is that it is easier for soldiers to train with, compared to bows and arrows, which require considerable upper body strengths. effective range of the musket that the japanese troops used, if I remember is correctly, was about 25 paces. it was an advantage, but not without its own shortcomings.

It certainly was not a humanitarian mission, of which purpose is to 'rescue' helpless Koreans; it was self defense on China's part. The whole reason why the war broke out was because Korea refused to make ways for Japanese troops to invade China. Ming government did not act out of some sympathy; it was acting upon its best interest. Some people think making movies such as this is like betraying our savior or something, and well, that's not the case at all.

They have much shorter effective range and firing rate compared to bows and arrows. They indeed were armed with muskets, but that gave them only partial advantage, when other factors are taken into account. Korean navy was perfectly comfortable with utilizing artillery weapons aboard their ships, which Japanese navy had not yet achieved.

All in all, it was a difficult fight for Koreans who were caught with their pants down, but they were certainly not clueless. but muskets have a faster speed you have to take into account. Accuracy actually does not affect that much when big army encounters a big army. And i don't know about the effectiveness of Ming troops, but i know that Ming actually have their own disasters in their country, and they lost many army on the way to Korea, due to illness, ambush, and frequent rains.Jap actually sat down and try to negotiate when ming army came, they asked for the west of korea, which is actually rejected by ming.

at 18th century standard, muskets had a firing rate of about 3 shots per minute. the most significant advantage of musket is that it is easier for soldiers to train with, compared to bows and arrows, which require considerable upper body strengths. effective range of the musket that the japanese troops used, if I remember is correctly, was about 25 paces. it was an advantage, but not without its own shortcomings.

Actually i don't know about Korea, but Chin didn't include that war in their history textbooks. So many Chin ppl don't even know that war, let alone they think they are savior. It is this movie that actually caught ppl's attention on Korean history. It is not that Kor refused to make way for Jap to invade China, it is Kor refused to attack China with Jap, and Jap used that as an excuse to conquer Korea and then conquer China. They wanted to use Korea as a base for their empire.

Correction: Hideyoshi indeed asked Korean government to make a way so that they can invade Ming. If you insist on otherwise, I am pretty sure I can find some historical documents preserved in some source. it will take some time for me to locate it, but I am pretty confident that i can. maybe after thanksgiving, since tomorrow library will close.

I am not saying Koreans are not strong, quite to the contrary, i believe korean armies are really good and accurate at archery. However, you should know that Jap actually signed peace treaty for 3 yrs, and invaded again, this time Koreans are getting better now, but nonetheless, China still sent troops there, and in both wars China lost a lot of soldiers and generals,they fought so hard for Korea. I don't know whether you can say they are ineffective but from what i see they fought really hard

no, negotiation went on for three years, but they failed to meet agreement with Ming. that's when Japan invaded Korea again. i am not sure what Chinese history tells about Ming's supposed 'intervention' if you could call it that, so on that issue I'll have to look into it further.

Actually you are right the negotiations went was never signed, it dragged on for three years, i just checked. However, it is Jap that actually made unreasonable claims, and BOTH Kor and Chin disagreed. And i am not sure, i think you meant Chin's help on Kor is an intervention and not helping. I don't know whether you meant Koreans are better off themselves. For that i part i don't know, i might need to look into it further.
