The proposition referred to in the video is 55 pages single-spaced. It does not address the lobbyist cattle calls in the video. It is really an election campaign spending proposition. I just don't get the whole idea that taxpayers should pay people to run for office and that the government ought to manage the whole process. Maybe we ought to abolish elections altogether and just have Big Brother pick our representatives for us.
This is probably the absolute most important law I've ever heard of in my entire life and I'm not even exaggerating. More people need to know about this and more states need to introduce this Proposition.
As if the government doesn't waste enough of my money already... I'm all for getting rid of lobbying in California (I am a citizen) and in DC, on a federal level, but charging taxpayers for fair elections is bogus. Can't we just clean things up without creating some new beaurocracy?
Note, I haven't studied prop 89. Just going off the statements of this video. I'd love to hear if I am misinterpreting something.
ok.. who do you think we should clean up without creating 89? Seems to me what is said in the video, all true. I would never have a chance to be heard while business who has the money can simply buy time so to speak.
Dont forget wasnt it last year US congress passed a bill that would simply deny bills to the floor brought on by "grass-root efforts" which means normal citizens organizing and proposing a bill? They would rather listen to business than to us..
It's funded by a 0.2% corporate tax. Corporate, not personal. Besides, big corporations use the lobby industry and influence make more money than they already do. (Remember our gas prices over the last year, vs. Big Oil's profits?) Take big-money lobby out of the equation, and I bet well end up keeping more in our wallets.
hehehe, you think corporations print money. The 0.2% tax is actually passed on to consumers or reduces the returns of the retirement plans that hold the shares (yes, corporations are real people, real retirement plans, etc).
Prop 89 seeks to restrict free speach by limiting access to elected officials.
Actually unless you own a corporation or a bank, you won't be paying for this. The proposition pays for this by raising the corporate tax rate by a minuscule two tenths of one percent.
We need fair campaign finance reform. I am not sure this is. Big Union money is a huge problem as well..just look at the last election. Look at the supporters of this prop...union after union. They want to disarm corporate America and push their agenda...is this fair? NO. Show me the facts on how this stops the big union money please. Red flags go up seeing the ultra liberal groups/politicians listed...like Phil Angelides and The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.
Wrong again. There's only one major union that supports Prop. 89 - the CNA. The REAL dividing line is not corporation vs union -- it's those who have big money lobby machines, and those who don't. Case in point -- the Teacher's Union spends more than almost anyone else on lobbying in Sacramento; and big surprise - they're against it.
United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) -- Western States Council
A national union whose members work in a wide range of industries, including retail food, meatpacking, poultry and food processing, manufacturing, and retail stores.
Actually you are a victim of misinformation, unions will have to follow the EXACT SAME RULES as the corporations. And on top of that, the clean money system Prop 89 creates is completely and totally voluntary!
You say that only because you haven't done your research. I spent three weeks shoulder to shoulder with these men and women while filming this piece alone, and I promise they don't have our (the public's) best interests in mind. Their making millions by standing on our backs and bribing our elected officials needs to end. It's time to wake up.
Like I said, let people make up their own minds. Why do you feel that you need to do this for us?Who are you anyways? Some politician?I admit I don't know allot about politics, but I do know you are trying to get people to vote the way you want them to.
Why because he trying to show you another side of the story.. The video is help make up our minds by giving us a total different aspect of the situation... Whats the harm in that? Your crying for people to "make up their mind" but to make a good decision is to look at all sides of a story and form an opinion. how can someone make the right decision if all you see one side to it?
I agree. Its all the lobbying that makes America not a republic, not a fascist empire, but an aristocratic country;. These days, whoever has the most money has the most government power.

so, what is prop 89? I wish she would have explained how it was going to do this, as opposed to just what it's ostensibly supposed to stop.
