Simon Phillips on drums, he produced with Mike Oldfield's Tubular bells. Simon Phillips has played with every one. I did not know he played with Oldfields
"Platinum" is one of the most underrated Mike Oldfield albums. Far from brilliant as "Ommadawn" or "Amarok" but so fresh with that jazzy touch, and he managed to harmoniously put Philip Glass and Gershwin in the same album. Talking about that, I loved the "North Star" section in this live version!
This is great... MO knew how to 'fit' his, so 70s, progrock, music into the 80s so that it sounded cool back than, but was still so true to the amazing original!
Mike Is A Miracle In The Music . I remember was a child 1982-1985 and my music then is hard rock ( sabbath- zeppelin - purple). When i hearing mike something change inside me . Thanks Mike forto the music especialy for my memories.
Excelent version with Phil Spalding on bass and Simon Phillips on drums, can't get better musicians than that. He also did Crises and Discovery live that night. Crises in particular was stunning.
Yes he started out on bass apparently (after the classical guitar at home)amazing how some great guitarists started on bass, but it makes sense musically.
my favourite out of the whole collection, not that I do not like the rest of his work but this my favourite of all times. I can remember having heard it on my friend's radio when I was still a kid and it took me a long time to find out who the band was. whenever I hear Mike Oldfield I can't stop beating whatever is around me. At work it annoys all my colleagues, but damn its good. Go Mike!!!
Yes, I changed the music taste of half of my Gymnasium i.e. Grammar School class by letting them listen to this. And my family, who got inundated i.e. brainwashed in between!
Wow, can't believe this clip is here- I was at this concert which was held at the Velodromo in San Sebastian all those years ago.
Much as I like his music, I find that on most occasions when he takes his studio albums and plays them live, it just doesn't work. Obviously you can't perform an album like "incantation" live exactly as on the recording
As much as I love Mike Oldfield and Platinum, this version is my least favorite. Meggie has such a beutiful voice and here seems totally out of sync...
Only the part starting at 3:30 is originally from Glass, the rest of Platinum is MO's own work. This last part, North Star, is adapted by David Bedford and MO to form Platinum part 4.
I like this live version and the album version, but they're not really comparable. The voices are better on the album :-). I don't know what went wrong; Reilly is normally excellent live.
I don't really like Glass'original, a bit too repititive and not melodical enough for me. But that's just personal taste.
