I tweaked EQ's as close as I could on the MP-2 to duplicate the sound of the Triple Rec with the mindset being, "If I wanted a TR sounds through my MP-2, what would my settings be?" I had to up the mid's alot.
But no, nothing official. I hit the record button when they both sounded pretty close to the same to my ears.
The ADA sounds muffled, and yet 'sshsh-y'. Typical of such early gear rack preamps. (I'd use my Taboo Artist long before that thing, and it's all digital.) The Mesa is way gutsier, yet more defined and tighter.
I fought the SM57, but lost. The only trouble you might have is syncing the audio to the cam. Not much of a challenge, really. In recording forums you can find amp modelers, direct to box, but the SM57 usually takes the cake. Everyone will tell you that.
Bout the comparison. I did this one at home. I love the Recto. Only Mesa does that sound. I love the ADA. It's the most versatile $400 distortion pedal around. But it's not a power amp. (apples-oranges)
@brandon9271 I did a noise-gate mod but to be honest it made no difference so I'd still call it "stock" in the sense that it still has original sound.
You missed my point. I didn't ask you to use any fancy EQ's or studio tricks. All I asked for is for you to use a good quality mic. You have all that nice gear and then you proceed in trying to give us a tone test by using a shitty camara mic....... Buy a SM57, mic your cab and record some clips. It's not that hard dude!
what foot controller do you use i have the mxc ada with one quad switch and 2 expresstion pedels and love them i want another quad switch. Do you know where i can find one let me know please thankx. I think both sound great but the triple has more clarity
@frogjim turn the noise gate off and then turn down OD a bit and just a little of Drive until no more big hum.
The preset have much to much gain even for extrem styles .. turn some highs down to.. the MP2 is not britlle at all..
for crunchy smooth turn down a bit the mids (graphic eq & tone)
If ADA still existed it would be the death of LIne6 and real amps such as rectifiers wouldnt be brought by bedroom players... ,-) But someone put there factory on fire and now there dead! ,-)))))
I see where your coming from, but you have to see where I'm coming from. There can never be too much presence in my bands guitars. Because they need as much as they can get to play through my cymbals. They cut through sound like a razor. So I just prefer mesa. Also, you can change that vintage sound, it's just how he has it set up.
Sure. I go to the professionally recorded shit before buying amps, which, includes EQ's, the best effects, a bunch of polish, and shit that disguises the actual sound of the amp. NOT. The point of the video is distinguish what it sounds like in a real-world situation. In this case it's a Sony DV-Cam Camcorder's audio input through the air. Speaking for myself, when considering buying an amp, I don't want polished recordings to reference--they all end up sounding the same.
@PixelMassacre This is by far the best comment I've ever read on youtube! In case my comment gets lost in the mix I'm referencing the comment you made about listening to the pseudo-professional sounding clips that disguise the amp's actual tone. This proves that you aren't like the rest of the sheep that lurk YouTube and forums who have no idea what the hell they're talking about. I think I love you! LoL.
Hey, I'm a biy of a N00B with my triple rectifier as I've never had a preamp before. Where do you plug in the preamp to use it with the MESA power section and NOT the MESA preamp?
man with hair like that you dont have to be able to play..they should have a signature hair extensions based on your hair, I 'd buy a set...anyway, this is a good tone test
Put a BBE in with that ADA and that unit will come alive huge.. it will also with the Boogie.. but not a much.. heck just get a check one of "the bay " .. ie: a 362 model number.. again.. that ADA will wake up BIG TIME..!!!
just my .02 for you and everybody else out there..
Actually I did add a BBE sonic maxizer to it a looooong time ago when I first got it. I sent the BBE back. I didn't do much but degrade my sound. Maybe the BBE's are better now.
Being a ADA MP2 owner, I can definately say the PreAmp tubes used make the world of difference. I run my MP2 with a JJ for the stage 1 and a Mesa STR in the stage 2, into a 69 Marshall JMP 100 watt lead head using grove tubes for my power tubes and Mesa's for all 3 preamp tubes. We play Metal and Blues and I can easily match Kerry King's Slayer chuga chuga to Doug Gilmore's Crystal Clear solo tone. I love my ADA, proud owner for 14 years now.
my stage amp consists of a MP - 2 a Rockman PGE2 (very rare 1 of 99 made) an ADA poweramp (the model slips my mind sry guys) and 2 rockman fullrange cabinets
depending on the song i switch out headcases between my rockman shit and my ADA shit
One more thing, you could have held a note to see how each unit holds and sustains. That would be good too, I know the Mesa I have sustain very well all the way to the end of the note without getting all mushy. Plus if this isn't about your playing ability, why in hell do we have to stare at you for 5 minutes? Just kidding bro cool comparison and good of you to take the time to do so.
MP 1's are better sounding than that. I love my Mesa Trip Rec though. I had good racks setup using the MP1 and Marshall JMP1. Can't go wrong with either those two as long as you have a GOOD amp behind them.
The Rec sounds a bit more articulate and a bit more punchy. The overall sound of the tone itself is about the same. It's just the difference in punchiness/articulation that is the biggest sound difference to me. A big thing is that you are using the Rec's power section to power the ADA. I bet they would sound a lot different if you were using a separate power amp for the MP-2. Power tubes have a bigger impact on tone than most people know.
hayatımın beş dakkasını yedin götünü siktiğim, ulan yaro, test sürüşü diye niye sıyırıyosun hemen kendini, ebiliti mebıliti, o kadar aletin var az çalışıp örensene bişiler, saçını koluma dolayıp dübürden vurduğum.. yazıklar olsun ya, olacak bişi değil.

man, you don't need a Triple racto... It's too loud...it really is! if you want to put something out from your rectifier poweramp, get a single recto,so you could crank it up, you will get awsome sound at low loudness, dual is something in betwin, but if i could vote, i wouldn't vote for a triple maybe even not for a dual...
its gonna be awesome though cause triple rectos are amazingly thunder-like sound. i like that especially on stage..i'm thinking of a mesa triple recto with a 300 watt 1960 marshall cab. its gonna sound pretty much insane. the thing is they are so fucking expensive. mesa's are the shit thats all i know.
pluging Mesa to a Marshall 1960 is a total disaster...I wouldn't be teeling you all this,if i didn't kwon, we tryed that in my band, but it was no good...than my friend bought a Mesa Recto cab and we tried it on that, oooo man, now we are talking about the sound...Marshall cabs aren't as good, as many people claim them to be... =(
oh, and I think that there are better amps than mesa, even on stage... Try ENGL, or maybe RIVERA, Mick Thomoson has a custom Rivera, it's KR7, listen to it... =)
The 300 watt 1960 Marshall is exactly what was used in this recording.
I like the "boxy" sound of my 1960B Marshall (90's model) but to be honest, the Mesa sounded more straight forward and "crisp" with the Mesa recto cabs. The other guitar player at the time had a recto cab with his DR and it was an awesome combination. If I'd kept the TR I would have most likely upgraded to the recto cab just because of the particular amp/cab combination.
I thought about going with a single, but just because you triple the wattage doesn't mean the amplified volume triples. I'd venture to guess the difference between a TR and a SR or DR is very incremental, which is why I decided on the triple.
lol.. dude my ebay account's suspended. i cant appeal it either. like...they wont let me! somethings wrong. erh. damnit i found a few used ones on google and guitar center. they have it pretty decent. i know new triple rectos arent supposed to be that far from used rectos. but whatever's cheaper for me, and works well. do you recommend me using a triple recto? i've heard they are amazingly loud, exactly how i want it to sound, and by hearing it off of this youtube thingy..
Check out your local Craig's List instrument section. I've seen some go through my area for about a $1000--some including the cabs. I sold mine for $1500 but that was almost new.
This may be one of the few (only?) videos of an ADA preamp on YouTube. I've got both the MP-1 and MP-2 as well as a broken T100S tube power amp - they are all just sitting in my room gathering dust. If anything, I'll plug my MP-1 into the input of my Marshall 1987X head now and then. The MP-2 can (as heard here) get some decent high gain sounds but I could never get a nice clean tone. On a guitar with humbuckers, I'd get some bad clipping. Not a problem with the MP-1.
There's TONS of videos of ADA preamps on Ytube. Even of the semi rare MP2 & MP1 Classic. Even the regulars from Adadepot have a video of them jamming.I had all 3 versions of ADA's gtar preamps, my favorite was the MP1 with the 3TM mod (3 tubes). Imho, the MP2 sounded too "sterile", as did the Triple Rec I had.The MP2 wasn't even designed by the same team that made the MP1. For searing liquid metal solo tones, the MP1 is one of the best. For modern metal rhythm -an old 2 channel Dual Rec -imho!
Yeah, I run into the same problem with the cleans clipping out. "42" seems to be the point where you'll start seeing red with my Ibanez S540's. I finally ended up just bringing all the distortion masters down really low to around 55 to equal the levels out with the cleans. Thing is, with my TR I had the same issue. The clean channel had to be CRANKED to compete with the masters of the OD channels. Kinda wondering if something was wrong with it but I've heard lots of bad news with TR cleans.
may I ask what type of tubes, and the set up you had for the MP-2? and the MP-2 is stock right? just curious because I'm possibly looking at an ADA for my next amp.
I use a DC-5 head that could use new tubes and a service I'm wondering if should sell and pocket a lil bit of money our invest even more money into it haha!! although everyone says to buy new tubes and service it... I wonder why haha
Your crazy if your going to sell a DC-5 to pocket money for a half digital preamp. Which ever money you'll pocket you will end up spending that and more to get back the sound of the DC-5
yeah I agree in the long run I'd stick it out and keep the amp. but I'm also going to college and its a damn loud amp. I do have a power attenuator but could that just something else to get stolen in college? :( man this sucks!
You dont need an attenuator. Like all Mesa amps, the DC-5 has a volume channel and an output knob which serves as the master volume. THat keep it within practice levels.
I ended up selling the TR simply because it was such a pain to work with my rack (FX loop issues, etc.), however one thing I miss is usage of the volume knob. With the ADA it's either on/off--no in between.
The ADA is stock with the exception of a change in one of the resistors (MP-2 noise gate mod) however I don't think the mod changed anything and I'm not sure if I did it right.
I'm pretty sure the last tubes I put in it were JJ's.
Neither amp was using any effects (including any onboard on the MP-2 other than equalization).
Lot of money difference for a little sound diferece, ive got the mp1 and it sounds great!

yeah I agree in the long run I'd stick it out and keep the amp. but I'm also going to college and its a damn loud amp.
