Also, Menuhin said he went to Toscanini's hotel suite to rehearse a violin concerto prior to concert. The phone rang, Toscanini went ballistic and pulled the phone wires out of the wall! Menuhin was amazed by his uncontrolled reaction.

Un maestro così tiranno, oggi non sarebbe più possibile perchè si avrebbe l'ammutinamento dell'orchestra, basti ricordare il caso Muti alla scala!Oggi i professori d'orchestra hanno i loro diritti il loro sindacato!Se un musicista sbaglia non può essere messo alla berlina come faceva Toscanini.

@billyguns2 Reiner had very small conducting gestures so one day some guy in the back (I think a trombonist) brought a telescope or binoculars with him to make the point.

Reiner fired him on the spot; you couldn't do that today.

I think he's overrated. He never speaks about fraseggio, just only rhythm. I'm a clarinettist. I would have knocked him if he had screamed at me. De Sabata is much better.
