It really irritates me that people complain that this is a waste of money when they should be complaining about multitrillion dollar wars, and "bailouts" of corrupt banks, and the "war on drugs" and the 9 billion dollars lost on a platform in Iraq. Our world totally throws away TRILLIONS of dollars and people whine about using a few BILLION to explore the universe? Those people are IDIOTS. You sure do not see brilliant scientists complaining.

A billion dollars is only one thousandth of a trillion dollars and I think instead of the wars that cost trillions we should spend TRILLIONS on science, If Alma can be made with billions imagine a scientific endeavor a thousand times more expensive! We could probably develop warp drive or actually find alien races.
I'm confused. How could so many dishes be working together to be an astronomical interferometer? I thought that for an interferometer you had to reflect a photon directly into another possible path for that photon, which seems to be violated by the fact that each dish has its own focal point. How is a big computer going to help put that puzzle together?
@zassounotsukushi I don't normally recommend wikipedia but check out the entry on interferometry. The ALMA array will be able to use it's size to measure time delays in the (relatively ) long wavelength signals and recombine them to emphasise salient features.
