DARK??? This excerpt is from Utrenja II - which is about the Resurrection. If you want darkness you should listen to the first or second part of this trilogy (St. Luke's Passion and Utrenja I (Entombment)).
To understand this piece (put in simplest terms) -
While others (composers) had written music asking the question "Why did we kill the Jews in the Holocaust?" or "Why do we let genocide and war happen?", Penderecki wrote Utrenja to ask the question "Why did we kill God?"
What is this piece called? I just discovered Penderecki (2nd violin concerto) and I am impressed with what I am hearing so far.. Excellent use of percussion :-))
A votre service :-) JUTRZNIA is an old russian word. In English literary translation is: matins - it is a religious meanning. You can be closer to "dawn" as far as the time of a day comes. Get some more CDs by Penderecki. Tough guy, excellent music, wonderfull orchestration :-)
Actually, 'jutrznia' [pronounced: yutshnya] isn't a Russian word, but a Polish word signifying the first part of a breviary prayer being said by Catholic priests before the sunrise.

Uwielbiam Pendereckiego.

Don't really like pendrecki, too much going on in his pieces, but the bass solo's at the end of this are BADASS.

As much as I like Penderecki, his music is just so relentlessly DARK. I mean, has this man ever written anything even remotely cheerful?
