As much as I support the Americans being in Iraq for at least the time being, 50 bases is far too many and clearly not for the benefit of the Iraqi people. I got back from my third 6month tour four months ago. My first was first wave '03 and the second was '05. The first & second tour was in Basra. Anyway, the situation has improved massively. I've watched some interviews with the ranking members of their congress and they continue to say that "Iraq can defend itself" or "Iraq fought Iran and won, we know how to defend ourselves". So, if this is pushed on both sides, we are looking at being at war with Iran, who won't like it and the Iraqs we have trained and equipped.

if they can eventually get the iraqi gov't to be legitimate enough to sign off on the iraqi oil law, then they can put in bases to "protect the oil field operations and personnel." All security will be private contracters, but it will be a de facto occupation of iraq. waiting for the Iraqi gov't to be able to sign off on stuff is the reason we're staying there now.
