In British English the name of this instrument is Jew's harp (old English name is trump). In the States it is also called jaw harp or mouth harp (not mouth's harp). As far as I know Jewish people traded this instrument in the 11-12th century in England, thats why English believed it was a Jewish harp. But Jew's harp has no tradition in Jewish music culture.
For me linguistic aspects are way less important than the meaning behind the words: this great musical instrument, call it whatever...
Can people stop using the word "Jew's harp" ? These instruments are native to many parts of the world. The "mouth's harp" with the nationality attached to it is more accurate.
actually the Hungarian minority, the "Csango" people in Moldva, Romania know this song as "Kecskés" or goat dance. So that region is a big melting pot of cultures: Romanians, Hungarians, Gypsies, Jewish - Thats why we like their music so much... Same melodies in different cultures.
theres a sound you made that ive only heard a few others make and have wanted to now for the longest time how to do it. you only did it a few times in this video. It sounds like your rolling your tongue or something. its rapid fire like a machine gun. Is that sound only possible on super high end harps? i can only get a hold pretty low quality. my first was one of those damn snoopys. utter crap.
The best jaw harp player I have ever heard. I dunno why but always feel his sounds! OI! I LIKE IT LOTS! Gonna have to get me one of his fathers jaw harps 'cos I like em more than bees love flowers! (I love flowers too though).
@dumdork55 - I have a medium one, Looks like Aaron's, but a lill larger, It sounds great, I got mine in Hungary, Europe. Also have a low one from a while back, but almost never play it, unless I really need a specific sound.
I am pretty sure that certain jews harps are made with very little clearance between the blade and the frame. This is so that the player merely needs to breathe in or out forcing the blade to move to allow air though.
Which doromb you play here? It's sound like your Balcan Devil track, but there written Black Fire...But anyway cool.
About tooth.Playing with vargan, khomus or doromb you CAN'T harm your health, your teeth will be OK thanks to really usefull vibes. You can only hurt your lips. When i play fast music on my vargans or dorombs, some times i hurt my lips, but it's not deadly wounds.)))
Can you play this instrument for years without doing severe damage to your teeth?? I sure hope so cause your video makes me wanna buy one, and learn to kick ass on it... that was great, nice playing man.
nem mindegyiknel. vannak olyan dorombtipusok, amik csak befele pengetve szolnak jol, vannak olyanok, amik csak kifele. ra kell erezni, mi az amit szeret a hangszer..
