I always loved watching Evelyn Ashford sprinting. She always looked natural and feminine. An awesome talent, who never really realised her full potential because of continuous injury problems. A fit Ashford in 1983 could have won the 100m/200m at the World champonships.

Yes, Ashford did beat Gohr after the Olympics and in so doing broke the world record! (10.76)

As amazing as this relay was, the fact is/was

the GDR women were all on performance enhancers. Thank God, the USA had great

sprinters like Evelyn Ashford who could beat

runners like Gohr and Koch. She may not have

done it at these world championships, but

she did be beat Marlies Gohr at an international meet just weeks after the

L.A. Olympics.

yes you are very correct there my mistake but it has to be noted that Marita Koch was only running the 100m as an after thought as she was more suited over the longer distances at 200m & 400m. remember as well that Marita Koch was the East Germans second string at the 100m with Gohr the first string.

The east germans really put performance enhancement on the map!!! They truly understood the science of drug taking, the best at it. Then came the  American's who became are sloppy and greedy. I personally have no problem with people taking drugs to help the performance. Entertain me B*tches!!!!

The Cold War was at its most. Don't be that naive and chauvinist,wegersfour. Testing was not implemented yet. The big difference is since the East German Comunist government fell, the secret info turned into public.

I agree with your perspective. It is very objective. People point fingers at the Socialist athletes from the 1970s and 1980s and choose to remain oblivious to how much more viable it was for the Western countries to obtain non-detectable performance-enhancing substances.

Also, these same people turn away and pretend like everything was fine when the Australian and US swimmers were setting astonishing records in Beijing. It was all publicity and endorsements for them and no criticisms.

My god. Kratochvilova run an incredible leg. Good stategy by the east germans putting Koch on the tird leg. She won it for the team. But my god Kratochvilova was remarkable.

En 1989 Florence Griffitth ya estaba retirada, en 1988 ni la misma Marita Koch podría haber hecho mucho contra ella. En cualquier caso no sé quién de las dos se drogó más. Hay reveladores documentos de la Stasi desclasificados después de la caía del muro de Berlín con detalles de las cantidades de esteroides tomadas por sus atletas, entre ellas la propia Koch.

What an amazing third leg by Marita Koch but Kratochviloba almost chases the east Germans.The comentator is wrong, the first leg is not Sabine Bush who in fact runs the 2nd leg.
