Although Sheriff Lawrence Rainey and Deputy Sheriff Cecil Ray Price brought major shame, dishonor, and discredit to the badge, the people of Neshoba County and the State of Mississippi, the real finger needs to point to Governor John C. Stennis and the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission. The governor ran the commission during this time and Rainey and Price reported directly to him. What's sad is the US Navy currently has a supercarrier, USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) named after him.
Deputy sheriff Cecil Ray Price was a coward and a murderer...He brought shame and dishonor to the badge, Neshoba County and the people of Philadelphia, Mississippi...What's sad is none of the Mississippi Attorney General's from 1964 all the way to 2001 would bring murder charges against Price...It wasn't until 2001 when MS Attorney General Mike Moore finally decided to bring charges..Then all of a sudden, Cecil Price dies following a fall from a piece of equipment at his job on May 6, 2001.
@TikiKoelzer You may be white, but you're not from the south. It's not the same anymore, you prejudice douche. I'm sick and tired of Northern elitist types lumping all southerners into the same "racist" category.
Yes, we still have racists and bigots down here, but they are the minority now. But everytime some nutjob with an accent does something racist, we ALL get blamed. Bullshit!
And by assuming the South is still "the same," you're no less prejudice than anyone depicted in this movie.
That's one of the many subtle representations shown in the movie. "Clayton Townley", Grand Wizard of MS KKK was representing Edgar Ray Killen. "Clinton Pell" and "Sheriff Stucky" represented Sheriff Rainy and Deputy Price, the REAL police force of Neshoba County, MS.
I love how this movie shows the Freedom Summer Killings...it does a great job of kinda "playing" with ur emotions...showing both sides of the issue. The "good guys" and the KKK members "bad guys" views. Great movie!
Brilliant film, some parts of it give me goosebumps. I've seen it about 5 times now, and never gets boring. People should learn a history lesson from this.

I call it the second" civil" war (195X-196X)
Ironically, there's no difference. Except the problem was not solved on the green fields,
Though, we were STILL kept in line, the north and south was STILL dukin it out and there was fire and blood.

Quite a few movie icons got their start in this movie...
Willem Dafoe (Ward): Green Goblin
Gailard Sartain (Sheriff): Fat Guy from The Outsiders
Tobin Bell (Agent Ward's partner): Jigsaw ("I want to play a game")
