The iPad (in addition to the widespread and instant derision it has recieved for having a name reminisicent of a feminine hygene product) currently exists in gadget purgatory. It is not functional enough to replace a netbook, or small enough to replace a smart phone. It is, as it stands, a confusingly useless device for the average consumer. If you have a PC/Mac/Laptop and a phone, why buy this mutant that underwhelms on both sides?

In case you want to type, it might have a huge ergonomic problem with the virtual keyboard. Unlike iphone or similar sized devices with virtual keyboards, you cant thumb-type on it while holding. Which means, unless you find a convenient non-slippery, sloped surface (!) to rest this device on, you will have to painfully grip this fairy large device with one hand while typing with other.
The iPad is just like the iPod touch, in that there is no multitasking. You cant surf the web while listening to music. You cant work on a document and talk on AIM or Gtalk. In other words, the iPad just a giant iTouch and cannot match netbooks.
Someone, anyone, please give a good argument why Flash is so horrible on Macs and runs without a hitch on Firefox on Windows. I can't believe it is Adobe's fault (Photoshop rocks on Macs, they've got the know how). I honestly don't understand why it is so bad on OSX!
I'm so glad that apple is finally gonna take a hit, and be shown that they are NOT infallable or superior....the MAD TV skit was fing awsome and that was 4 years ago....I can't wait to see the Microsoft comericials that come out in the near futures....Apple finally gave microsoft a decent punch line, and all wrapped in a pretty package like the iPad!
For a device with 1024X768 not supporting flash plugin, it's doomed to fail. Apply shouldn't claim full browsing experience. It's their desperate attempt to restrict flash games on the internet and promote games on their own apps. Utter selfishness.

if u want something portable but multi purpose; media player, phone, mp3 player, camera, games machine, u get a smart phone or itouch/iphone.
this ipad has few of these advantages that a smart phone or laptop/desktop have individually.
it's best saving grace I suspect is its power to web & mail browse, plus generally entertain and do some office work, on a large screened device for a low price.

They probably did spend a lot of money to develop the CPU, but most of the parts in it are probably the same as the iPhone/Touch. And Apple has boatloads of those parts, so I doubt they're expensive.
Also, the $499 price is for the 16 GB Wi-Fi only model. The highest model is the 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G model for $829.
I'm sure they'll making a profit on the units, but where Apple will really rake it in is through the iStore.
THIS IS THE FUTURE! of course the first version of this is gonna suck. The NEXT versions are probrably going to have some usb ports a webcam/camera. In the end THIS will dominate everything. @cweilchiller This thing is not even close to a laptop. It's just a big iPod touch. They really screwed up when using a modified version of iPhone OS instead of a modified version of their mac OS. A laptop is far more practical than this because you can do so much more.
16GB base model is ridiculous even 64GB is not very much. People buy computers with 1000GB hard drives and somehow fill them up, how will 64GB ever hold you over.

Take a look at the LBook T9. It owns the iPad spec wise, and is expected to sell for $350-$375.
In addition to the T9, there's a bunch of other tablets on the horizon that kill the iPad in price and power.
And if you don't like tablets, browse around for a good netbook.
Contrary to what Jobs says, the iPad is competing directly with those products, and it's an inferior product to all of them.

@cweilchiller This thing is not even close to a laptop. It's just a big iPod touch. They really screwed up when using a modified version of iPhone OS instead of a modified version of their mac OS. A laptop is far more practical than this because you can do so much more.
16GB base model is ridiculous even 64GB is not very much. People buy computers with 1000GB hard drives and somehow fill them up, how will 64GB ever hold you over.

ummm, maybe you didn't realise this but, this isn't suppose to replace your Laptop or Computer it's a tablet. But I too think it's a pretty dumb idea. A big version of an iphone which can't make calls? Do they expect anyone to bite, but the racoons once all the shipment is in garbage?

called me old fashoined but I prefer my laptops and im happy with my ipod touch for fun browsing my ipod touch is more "intimate" than this to me the gb size is a joke there are laptops they were smart not putting the camera just simple business facts if this sells then they will get one out with more gb size and camera combo then they will have a sale

wow i gotta hand it to him but i think they are really screwing up not putting a webcam on it..... my understanding was that is was supposed tohave a webcam that reads your facial expressions. and gives suggestions like.... help menus. bill reminder etc. hope it has some great speakers also. i know the iphone speakers suck

and 2 months later the iPad will have a camera. then another 2 months later the "iPad s" will come out with a video capable camera.
