@AlanMolstad It's been a while, so I'm not sure. But I think you just measure your canvas from the top to the bottom on the back edge. Your canvas should look like a half circle when it is laid out flat. Measure from the middle of the flat edge down to the middle of the arc in the half circle. If you can find the book in the library, it would be really helpful.
haaaaaaaaa u built it Wrong........ first u have to tie each post after the firts three this is to insure strangth. then u start clock wise to make sure rain stays out and doesnt leak in as well for the smoke to clear to the top 13 poles plus 2 for flaps niece try thoe haaaa
@HalluciNation99 We built it and set it up according to the instructions in Gladys Laubin's book: The Indian Tipi: Its History, Construction, and Use. Excellent book - available on Amazon.
Sir: I was under the impression that plains tepees had an inner layer of fabric (buffalo skins) as insulation and that a convection current of air was formed between the two, the inner and outer. I enjoyed the video, thanks for making it.
Where did you get the materials to build this (price range)? I really would love to set up a tipi of my own this summer. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
hey lov da video but i wanted to no if its possible to make a tepee on cement ause im havin a parte and the cement in my backyard is big enough but not my grass
@stevenson66666666 contact me and I'll send ya a couple of pages that will give you all the info you need as far as patterns and materials....as far as setting them up, it's a breeze....I help as many as I can because everyone should experience the thrill of being inside a teepee.
awesome video!!!! where did you learn to build that tipi? is that the way actual native americans build them? i wonder if there are still native americans that live in teepees. i guess all the ones on the reservations live in houses. i wish this country would have allowed them to maintain their ancient life and not driven most of them to barren lands and poverty....too bad.....
@coupleofbeers31 Actually native americans use tipi's for healing ceremonies and to camp in at pow-wow dances all over america. The native american church also uses tipi's in their ceremonies in the southwest. not all native americans are living in poverty. Visit us and you will see, You are welcome always.
@beone011 You should be a little more specific or you'll have people thinking ALL Native Americans use tipis. Fact is, only the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains used the tipi--which is a Lakota word that can mean both "they live" when used as a verb and "house" when used as a noun.
@Shran1970 . I am talking about today, not 100 years ago and yes many tribes use tipi's today as I have described. I have shared a tipi with many different tribal members all over the U.S.
Very authentic looking! Tying the bottom piece of the entrance together seemed unnecessary and like something you could trip over and fall face-first into a fire in the center, though.
Great video! 5 starz. Got a couple of questions: How long are the poles? How wide is the base of the teepee? Would you say one man could erect one that size easy enough? Thanks pal.
Thanks! The poles on this tipi are about 20' long and the base is about 19' wide (front to back, the base is kind of egg shaped - slightly wider front to back than side to side.) As for putting it up by yourself? Might be a bit tough for one person with a tipi this size. A smaller once might be easier to set up by yourself.
My sons wants to build a tipi !!! He has bugging for the last 2 years. I love it- we live in sub and it's hard to do with all the restrictions.. I will let him try it. How did you find all those longs sticks?? Awesome video!!!
you sure make it look easy, thanks for sharing your video with us.. Sure wished I had nice teepee like that.. What kinda canvas are you using and did you do all the stitching on it.. I give you five stars..Awesome..
I have an area all ready for a tipi in my back yard. It's just a large circular area with crushed stone put down because my back yard is very wet. I'd love to find out where you got that canvas or whatever it is that you used to put around the structure. How did you get the poles & canvas? Did you buy them online or something?
What??!! Do you even know what a tipi is? It isn't a sacred church or something, it is a house. They lived in them. I agree, they are great for parties!
I am a cree native from canada, We did not have churches so a tipi was used both as shelter and a place of worship unfortulay your probaly a racist that want to make fun us by bringing booze in there because you think were all "Drunk Indians" and that is what we did.

Yeah... I'm Metis and I've built and camped out in tipis before many times. If a certain tipi was designated a place of worship then yes, it would be disrespectful to party in THAT tipi... but obviously no one has done that, so it is not disrespectful.
thanks for this useful reminder! used to live in my homemade tipi for 10 months back in 2004 and will set up it up once more next week or so. didn't remember all the steps...
This tipi is about 20 feet. We made it ourselves. If you are doing the same, consider purchasing sunforger canvas. I used Gladys Laubin's book, The Indian Tipi, to calculate how much fabric to use.
U do make this look way easy!!! We are getting ready to build one hope it is as easy as it looks....may I ask what size teepee is this? What kind of fabric and how much did you purchase? Thanks.
We have set it up a number of times so we kind of have a rhythm to it by now. But I must say that Gladys Laubin's book, The Indian Tipi, was a huge help to us.
The best way to keep rain from entering the front door is to attach the top of the door flap to the inside of the tipi and let the bottom of the flap hang outside. As for the front, you just need to make sure the holes for the pegs are sized so that it makes a snug fit. For the most part, we stay very dry inside the tipi. On our first camping trip with it it rained the first night. The next morning, people with tents were drying their stuff, we stayed dry!
love it! making a teepee to go over my daughter's bed in her room (the walls are painted to look like the outdoors with trees, moose, birds, beaver, etc...) As for the person who asked about a pattern... You can lay your sticks or logs down (open) and trace the triangle three times; cut out your completed pattern then fold again along the triangle lines and cut a half circle on the top (for sticks/logs to go through). this works for smaller ones, might get tricky with such a big teepee though.
did you make the cover yourselves? if so where did you find the pattern? I'm looking everywhere for a clear pattern and can't find one... brilliant video, cheers
I lived in a nomadics 16ft tipi in oregon. good times.(I usualy lay in the pole w/the cover hooked to it right after the tripod is set, then lay in other poles) thanks
I'd like to live in a tipi but finding a piece of land where you can put one up and live in it without getting hassled by all the regulations which seem to be everywhere- that's the main problem. It would be a better world if more people lived in tipis though.
