You can get down, i made it and you fall through the hole and are caught by the ladders so you fall safely down, works well.

i tried this in mine craft server 1.0 and the miecarts drop from the ladders and often disappear

I found this. There was a 'translate' button in front of it. I pressed it. It changed 'fast' to 'solid.' Hmm. Minecraft - How to build a "solid" Elevator on Beta 1.7.3. Interesting, YouTube. (I wonder how that worked..)
