slap those on a 747, dont tell anyone on board and install cameras above every seat, plus a urine detector in the cushions that is attached to a big red light next to the headrest. first video to get a trillion views on youtube.
@Voxnulla Interesting that the 130 is still used as the primary delivery system of the MOAB and is also often used as a gunship... Not to mention that, like the A10, you can practically fly them backwards. They can carry a large payload and are generally very capable planes, despite their perhaps archaic design...
What a great video! It's nice to see the capabilities of the C-130 from time to time. As taxpayers we really got our money's worth with the C-130, it's been in service a long time and will still be in service for some time to come. Props to the US Navy for putting on one hell of a show! I salute you!
@ATHGT Buddy, if you had spent the time to read the caption: That video dates from 1997. How many V8 camcorders had an image stabilizer 14 years ago ?!? Then, tripods are not allowed in a grand stand. Then, on that huge crowd present this evening I'm apparently the only one who has taped it and has published it online.
@tvnshack I think that was pretty good videoing... since back in 1997... camcorders were with VHS tapes and they were about the size of a TV tray!!! Since it was in 1997... I was in the Marines at MCAS EL TORO and my buddy and I were there at Miramar watching this show. It was great!!! I remember the "F-14 Super Tomcat???" at just past twilight as it lit its afterburners and went straight vertical. That was a great airshow!!! Thanks for post this video!!!
@85SuzukiMadura Hello buddy. That's great ! I think that Super Tomcat is in this other video of mine C79JnCssz5M I did taped the whole show and I have created some other videos with all action that could be used. Check the other videos of my channel. I went to another Miramar show and captured again Fat Albert take-off 1OZZ0egP3yo Funny, it's not as popular as this one here ... and it's less shaky. Take care !
@madderhatter It's a - 20+ years old now - camcorder tape format released first by Sony and then Canon. It was initially named Video8. It was monaural with great quality as the sound was recorded diagonally across the tape along with the image, as compared to the VHS format where sound is recorded at tape speed (tracks at bottom of tape). 8 meant 8mm, as for the width of the tape. V8 was soon replaced by Hi8 that had stereo. V8 tapes are smaller and more robust that VHS-C.
@tvnshack - Ahh, OK. I definitely remember the Hi8 tapes. Just never heard of the V8 before. Back on topic, it was always a treat to see Albert take off with those JATOs lit. When I was with the 43rd Fighter Squadron up at Elmendorf AFB back in the late-80s and early-90s we were always the host squadron whenever the Blue Angles would come up for a show. Good times.
@Vaneps0 Hello. It was August 16, 1997. The date was written in the title but at the time I posted that video the title length was limited and it got dropped. I've updated the description part. Sorry about that.
But if you're interested, I also posted the video of the 1998 show: 1OZZ0egP3yo
It only SEEMS like that to you. We happen to be the most transparent, honest and, inviting Nation on the face of the planet. I would think a Canadian would appreciate that.
@Fk67Lg Absolutely not: Prop blades are always generating lift (or more conventionnally "thrust"). The JATO booster only help reaching take-off speed, plus a bit extra energy to help on this steep climb without risking stalling.
@tvnshack True. the C-130 will fly even faster after the rockets have fired as it approaches its top speed. so the props wont be turning any faster than normal
read about the guy in the Darwin awards who bolted one of those onto his car and smoked himself into the side of a mountain (about half a mile away from the road he was driving on)
I would beg to differ, from what I understand, air shows are one of the military's most valuable recruiting tools.. Not to mention that the aerobatics they perform are rather safe compared to a civilian air show...
how much did this entertainment cost the taxpayers? These entertaining shows should be stopped for the risk to planes pilots and their cost for sheer entertainment. (it is fun to watch however)
@vanwahlgren because im sure these pilots and planes are in some real danger... -_- . and tax dollars... just about anything any government does people are gonna say its a waste of tax dollars arent they?
@imjustwonderful This has been discussed here already : It's solid fuel. However, as commented on the Wikipedia article, all such kind of take-off assistance is interchangeably and universally known as JATO. I've been 8 years in the Air Force and witnessed several JATO-assisted take off. Everyone used the word Jet. Keep in mind that a Jet of hot air can be produced either by the combustion of liquid fuel of solid fuel.
@imjustwonderful That's the only use. It has been designed for short take off. If you want to know more, look for ZELL (Zero Length Launch) "F-84 ZELL" for instance. That's another solution to the "short take off" problem.
It is also useful for getting an aircraft off the ground with a heavier than normal payload, and for reducing the power needed from the main engines at take off, thus allowing the aircraft to have more fuel available once it is in the air, so it will have a longer range with mure stuff onboard.
@TheMuhammed05 its 2 high power jet/rockets attached to the back to give A LOT of extra trust during takeoff, but this plane is with the blue angels. the normal c-130 just has 4 blades and takes off like a normal plane(not vertically like this one did). this was purely designed for an airshow.
@8justin88 Sorry to burst your bubble. The JATO system on the C~130 was pioneered in the Vietnam war. Jungle runways were often short, and lets be honest, our planes took too much fire to be lollygagging with long take~offs. Jato was also used on the F~100 Super Sabre, which was an unruly god awful plane to fly. Yes this system was (and still is) used by the armed forces. It's not just for an airshow. Due diligence.
@diioriog - No, that is the smoke from the boosters being deflected down by the horizontal stabilizer as the pilot was pitching the nose down for level flight and the flashes of light are reflections of the booster combustion.
I'm only saying what I remember from going to a blue angels show several years ago, but I think it allows the plane to take off of a shorter runway and the angle and rate of climb makes it significantly harder to shoot down.
