  • physics works and I am still alive :)

  • Im curious Professor, have you noticed the algorithms which reoccur throughout humanity with respects towards art, music, literature and etc? Do you see the equation for telling time as I have? Its there if one knows where to observe! Good luck :)

  • The way he writes on the board, it's like no hesitation, it's so almost perfect 0.o

  • nun mein hintern ist geil

  • I want Sheldon as a physics teacher.

  • proud to be Dutch !

  • @1047762 lol

  • i wish i had him as my teacher at MIT. :c

  • These are the fringe benefits to getting into a school like MIT... most of your profs. are there because they actually love their subjects, not to just pick up their pay checks.

  • Where are my wacky old Jewish guy teachers? :(

  • This must be one of a kind teacher, a rare commodity.

  • A true inspiration for every physicist.

  • What's the story with the duch accent?I expect him to start tellin how 620nm light affects production of THC in cannabis plants

  • @Olengher lol, he is born in the netherlands graduated in nuclear physics in 1965 at the Delft University of Technology

  • i want him as my physics teacher if i go to mit

  • Neat video! I am on YouTube trying to promote my theory on the dynamics of light and time

This theory is based on just two postulates,

    1. The first is that the quantum wave particle function explained by Schrödinger’s wave equation represents the forward passage of time or Arrow of Time photon by photon

    2. The second is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle that is formed by the wave function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event.

  • Thanks to his lectures i'm starting to understand the topic of electricity. But i have still 2 mayor doubts:

1- Katy Perry as a sugestion? xD

    2- 4 dirks

  • Check out the following video entitled: Fé Ciência Glauben Wissenschaft Faith Science Esmeralda Campelo Antônio Peters. With enlightening arguments and facts, speaks Pastor Antonio Peters in an interview about his book entitled “Alpha and Omega“ (English subtitels)

“The book Alpha and Omega is not based on science to explain the Bible, it is based on the Bible and uses science as a keyhole to say: "Look, the Bible already tells us this and goes even further! (Pastor Antônio, 2010)"

  • i wish he was my teacher at school 16 years ago

  • And believe me I am still alive.

I'm doing science and I'm still alive...

  • I wish every university has a Walter Lewin. If not, they should just show his lectures.

A great man that influenced me greatly along with other great teachers such as Feynman

  • 40 hours preparation per lecture. Holy shit. Now it's easy to understand why his lectures are so good.

  • Great teacher... Mine was opposite

  • @danishmehdi hahahhah.... mine too..

  • I really wanna go to this school and I really wanna have this man as a teacher :]

  • This guy needs to do a set of televised lectures to the public!

Would be a lot better than trying to teach a misleading oversimplification of string theory in a 45 minute documentary to a country where the vast majority of people couldn't explain any of newton's laws, nor solve a quadratic equation.

  • Oh my! This video is most viewed in India.

  • @gtx2000hawk haha nerds

  • I watched this hopping it would put me to

    Sleep lol

  • Sir you are great hero In my life time I have to see you atleast once hats off sir

  • And this powerfull rocket, PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF hahahaahaha

  • Hats Off..!

I hope there are a lot and lot of Teachers like him..

  • i want to take addmission in mit so ple help me

  • if i ever get into MIT, i am definitely going to this guy's class!! xD

  • wish I was smart enough to go to MIT and be taught by this prof:(

  • What? There are (four) people who dislike this? What, they are jealous aliens?

    @trendyfunnysmart - Yup. I wish I had a teacher like him.

  • @karthikmurs I think they're also physics teacher and jealous that they could teach like him lol

  • Inspirational.

  • What makes him different is one thing: PASSION. He's passionate about teaching.

  • I want to study Physics again after all these years

  • I had a physics teacher who could only mouth obscenities in class. What a waste of such a good and fascinating subject.

  • @jondow14 i had a similar teacher.. used to call him "Mr. Secret Physics"

  • I had great teachers :)

  • I had a bad physics teacher..

  • i recommend all the teachers to have a look at dis video ... teachin' defined ..

  • 3 dislike !

    3 lethargic teachers

  • I thought there is no teacher like him !

Is there any video, complete video of his classes ?!

  • 3 dislikes... muz be those lecturers that failed to get the students' attention....

this prof is juz awesome N has great passion!!!!!!

  • I've got no words for this guy. Truly amazing!

  • This is the difference between other Universities and MIT..

    Awesome MIT! Awesome Prof!

  • This is how someone a part of an idealistic society is supposed to operate: literally doing what u love and loving what u do

unfortunately for the most part this is not true which is why i praise this man for his efforts in teaching others to love physics as much as he does

  • He is simply superb a great teacher(Prof). Indian students needs to get good practical knowledge. Here the students have good knowledge on concepts but lack in implementation , these led to lack of innovative. So most of us do servicing than making. I wish there are some Mr Walters in India

  • @shadowfox87<< then there should be no use of teachers, no use of universities. he is a teacher of MIT u can't critisise him so easily. if the teacher is not making the students to take interest in his subject then he is making no use of that money which he is receiving from that institute

and if the student is not taking interest then he is wasting money too

it should be done from the effort of both the student and teacher.

  • In order to have someone who has a passion to teach, one must also have a passion to learn, otherwise it's useless. His class wasn't full. Not every professor has the tools to do these demonstrations. I've always liked physics but that is not due to the professor. If I hated every class that had a bad teacher, then I would've failed undergrad. You gotta make a course your own by teaching it yourself.

  • i wan this kind of lecturer to teach me!! >.<

  • God help his grad students. if he spends 40 hours a week just for teaching an undergrad level class. that means his grad students are totally left alone. poor kids. I experience the same thing :(

  • @CEYSEY If undergrads didn't have professors of this caliber to teach them, how many would go on to graduate study?

  • Comment removed

  • @EsQue90 just saw you comment.but I don't think that he gives the same lecture for a month or gives one lecture to one group of students in one week and next week to another.probably all the sessions are held in one week period. so he has to give different lectures every week.I am sure he has been giving the same courses for a long time.that probably reduces the time he spends.but I can say for sure he is kind of a professor who just focusses on undergrad education.hope he doesn't have any grads

  • WOW !!! thatz the passion for teaching ... Wish I learnt Physics from him ...

  • I like this prof., very interesting!

  • good professor...... really liked him!!

  • Awesome Pedagogy!

  • he is soo cool!

  • wish i had a better prof...then i would have attended the phy classes...damn

  • my physics prof waslike this dr lawrence pinto awesoooooome :P

  • I always wanted to b at Mit bt destiny flowed towards becoming doctor , still physics is my best n scoring subject.gr8 job done by professors at mit.

  • the teachers and lecturers in the UK universities sucks!!! I have no idea what I'm I doing here....

  • awsm teaching....................!!

  • thats how teacher should be..i wish i had one

  • MIT here i come !!!!

  • How I wish I had teacher's like him !!

  • What a KING!!! :D :D

  • I have seen Richard Dawkins give a similar canon-ball-pendulum demo (beginning of this video) in his documentary "Breaking the Science Barrier"

  • Comment removed

  • "If you don't love physics, it means you've had a bad teacher" - GOLDEN..

  • @karthikmurs and very very VERY true!

  • @karthikmurs I had a bad teacher then xD

  • @rcrd18 lol. May be * wink*

  • wow..what a man, the macho, student must have capability of understand by producing a simulation in his/her brain ...but professors like this will boost them a lot...huh god all my professors ask me to Google, if I ask any question

  • wow WOW WOW!!

  • awesome professor loved his teaching

  • suppose you don't show it like I did, it is a CRIME ... :D

  • This works for high school physics, but any higher and its rendered pointless. How would you demonstrate a Fourier transform?

  • @slowzen he teaches physics! he emphasised that any prof teaching physics cud turn it into something interesting...

  • @csbarathi you possibly cant understand anything in physics if u dont understand these. These form an integral and important part of physics when it reaches a little higher level at which u should not feel that u dint understand it then

  • @csbarathi Sorry Einstein, not everyone are csbarathis. And you might feel it is a waste of time, but any one with commonsense can clearly see it is not.

  • @karthikmurs waste of time and waste of money are two different things

  • @csbarathi

Money? You mean, he spent fortunes in buying a pendulum, a rope, or a crappy bike? Its "demonstrations" that count. Money is less of an issue here than time, actually. If you are not finding an issue with time spent on the demonstrations, I don;t see the point in seeing money as an issue.. Capiche?

  • @karthikmurs so you're saying that someone from middle class India who has got enough qualifications can be at MIT in this class without a scholarship?

  • @csbarathi dude stop talking about wastage of money.. these demonstrations make MIT the top engineering institute in the world. MIT fees wont be lesser without the demonstrations

  • I wish my university should reach those standards

  • I am from Mysore India, a student of Saradavilas high school, early in 1950's, and our teacher NSS, would teach us like this only. All practical first and theory later. We students never forgot what we saw.

    Ramaprasad

  • i would love to learn from you Professor

  • Can this guy be my prof. xD?

  • omg he rehearses his lectures 3 times and spends 40 hours per lecture wow...

  • lol, the geniuses know how to play :)

  • I wish I had a prof. like that ..

  • OMG, how awesome his lecture is

    he is really fantastic professor

  • Awesome...Me too Have a lecturer lyk tis in ma junior college...:) Miss him loads...:(

  • الله يدخله الجنة ..

  • اللعن شكلك والله فنان

بس لو تجي جامعه الملك سعود وتسوي حركتك هذي لتفقع وجه

  • I'm crying now !!!

I think I've done nothing with physics =(

  • I wish I have such lecturer. ^_^

  • This man is totally dedicated to his craft because he spends 40 hrs of preparation before each lecture. Some professors I have taken walk in totally unsure what they are going to talk about.

  • MIT proudly presents...

  • What happens when you take a failed actor and make him do math.

  • @superbadlucre Then, you get a financial crisis like in 2008.

  • @superbadlucre Then, you get a financial crisis like in 2008. Their math failed on financial derivatives.

  • Respond to this video... Then, you get a financial crisis like in 2008. Their math failed on financial derivatives.

  • Thank You very much for your feedback. I actually was able to target all the videos from Professor Walter Lewin.

  • This man is brilliant! If I ever get the honor of meeting him I would kiss his forehead. This man is truly great.

  • Incredible, it would have been nice if Professor lewin and all brilliant professors had free online lectures for normal or not too wealthy people like us.

  • @aliapollo There ARE on line lectures of Walter Lewin. Entire course on Youtube.

And it is not just doing magic tricks, but full out physics, mathematics, and all -- it is no joke, he just made it interesting, and beautifull.

  • @aliapollo in the itunes store under "itunesu" you can get all of his classical mechanics lectures which include the demos in this video for free :)

  • sorry but they cut out the boring 2-3 hours of straight lecturing before all of his experiments...thats the real fun stuff

  • @MarioBrosClassic Well, he is teaching physics, not magic tricks -- that "boring" stuff is what it t is actually all about -- "fun stuff" is there, only to make "boring" a little bit more interesting.

  • waaaaaant! a teacher like this!

  • holy shit this guy can make the most boring stuff look interesting, I actually listened trhough the whole video...god I wish we had teachers like this at our school, then there wouldn't be so many burnouts

  • please please please don't die on these 5 years fist Ill finish medicine and then Ill go to MIT

  • @Norsty LOL hes not that old...

  • reminds me of joe wolfe

  • Please stay alive when I go to MIT...

  • @Taowhr LOL

  • @Taowhr

He retired already and is now an Emeritus professor of physics. What this means is that you have zero chance of having him as your teacher. Sorry.

  • Prof. Walter is so cool!!!

  • You're the best person whom I have ever seen that sacrifices his own precious time just for the sake of students like us. East or West Walter Lewin is the best :)

  • I love this guy, I've learned so much from him

  • I would love to meet this professor someday.

    Great respect.

  • I would love to be a student of MIT.

  • the first thing he said in the interview was absolutely spot on.

  • i'm old enough to remember juliumner miller. He fired my child mind.

Lewin does the same now i'm 52. Great to see an energetic man swimming freely against the modern "dumb-down" tide.

    !!FANTASTIC!!

  • A man who knows how to do his job.

    Congratulations!

I would like him to be my teacher...

  • Amazing, wish i had proffesors like him.

  • Marvellous..

My role model in teaching, though I do not have so many demonestrations as I teach math..

  • Brilliant!

His lectures for 8.01 Physics I: Classical Mechanics are posted online @ MIT OpenCourseWare website and additionally on MIT's YouTube channel.

    Enjoy!

  • the first thing he said illuminates the ENTIRE problem of science education in this country today. It's all because of bad teachers.

  • Ahh.. I wish I could have got a teacher like him... I would have never run away from Physics in my life....

  • I had an epiphany today. I've watched most of WL's lectures. But it only occurred to me earlier today just who he is. He is the heir to the Isaac Asimov tradition. Asimov wrote at least as much popular physics instruction as fiction. And he valued, above all, clarity. He wanted to be *clear*. Asimov died in 1992. But watching WL in action is like Asimov reborn. Thanks, Walter. :-)

  • Great Prof.

  • I agree. It comes up to the teahcer, how good the students learn. Cant tell them they are dumb if they fail.

  • great man....i just love his lectures and physics...

  • Physics vurks, aant ayem shteel alife!

    Jah!

    He's awesome!

  • he is a legend, he teaches so well

  • qweasd1999. can you be more dumb? u are saying that this professor's way of teaching is a waste of time? man. YOU ARE A WASTE OF TIME. making such a stupid and aimless comment. cheers mate!

  • God, I wish I could go to a university like this.

  • @NoPetrol Same here my buddy!

  • ...this is a real teacher...he puts all of himself into forwarding a knowledge to the others...:D

  • if i didn't have musical talent i would study physics. i had an amazing teacher and always been good at it, the problem is, i'm lazy and lose interest very fast.

  • I see that the pendulum had lost some energy due to friction.

  • Comment removed

  • I wanna to watch all the lectures that he teaches, because my physics teacher is exactly what he said...just... a trash one

  • This guy is amazing.

  • This guy's awesome

  • he's dutch you douche bag.

  • lol

  • aw man, i recently got rejected by MIT. apparently extra curricular activities count for something.

  • what kind of grades were you getting?

  • Incredible!

  • thanks for being the best

  • does he do birthday parties? seriously though, as the wise martolas said just one month ago "great teacher! i love physics!!" amen.

  • I love WL, his lectures, style of teaching and one day I will be his student, I hope!

  • Great lecturer! More physics teachers, tutors and lecturers need to take a lead from Walter Lewin and make learning interesting again!

  • Great teacher!

    I love Physics!!

  • Walter Lewin is a true legend.

    Forever my Physics idol.

  • keeping wonder to science, keeping enthusiasm to teaching make he a master than ever i have thought

  • College basically sell Admit ticket to attend class, like a hollywood movie, NFL football.

Yes-letter, yes, can come to class and see lecture.

No-letter. no, cannot come to class and see lecture.
