  • Not the best quality probably wins the price of 'understatement of the year' :D Nice song though

  • Did Ms.aretha thief the dam song frm my Otis someone please lemme know TRUTHFULLY

  • Thanks for the upload. I can't believe some people care more about the video resolution than the content.

Just one thing though, it's not the original. It was done after Aretha Franklin's cover version.

The "R-E-S-P-E-C-T take care TCB" part was not in the original but was added for the Jerry Wexler-produced Franklin sisters version recorded on Feb 14,1967.

It also completely omits the "hey-hey-hey" part that was integral to the original.

Not nitpicking. My band covered this song in 1965.

  • not even the worst xD

  • Looks like a 8-bit version of the song ^^

  • Maybe Otis just had a little respect for Aretha? Don't look at me like that...I'm only saying...

  • Nothing like the original!

  • i know this is OLD news, but to those that dont know Otis wrote the tune for his otis blue album.....and wexler and atantic records, who had thrown sam and dave into the stax arrangement continued to gather ideas from the stax environment and took the tune to aretha and with some rearrangment and a horn addition , plus arethas wonderful delivery , the tune reached its potential

  • I loved Otis' 'Respect' when I first heard it in 1965. The drummer was great. In fact I still listen to Otis' version more than I do Aretha's. When Aretha sang it in 1967 Iistened to and appreciated her version but to me, the original was the greatest.

  • The quality is not a problem. I am just so sad that I never got a chance to see the King of Soul. If you can, then you should listen to "Otis Redding - Live in Europe". It is just brilliant. The man really shows us what soul music is all about.

  • Thanks for uploading! I'm a music business major and one of my professor's told us that when Otis Redding first heard Aretha Franklin sing this song his response was, "I just lost my song." lol

  • @tharrell07 you are welcome lol

  • @tharrell07 You sure did answer quickly! lol

  • @tharrell07 actually he responded in live performance and he said: "that little girl done stole my song."

  • @gcheves Ha! Thanks for the correction. That's nice to know. :)

  • @tharrell07 The correct quote is: Even Otis Redding himself was impressed with Aretha`s performance of the song, and at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of the cover's release, he was quoted playfully describing "Respect" as the song "that little girl done stole from me" But since he wrote it.....he got paid for every copy Aretha sold.

  • @tharrell07 Aretha Franklin took this song and made it her anthem and sigature song! LOL! She killed it and Otis knew it,but he was so cool and gracious to her. He and Ree were friends, and he stated back then he was not mad at her! It made him a lot of money, and his estate made a lot of money after he died! His wife Zelma is still alive and so are his kids who sing too! This man was the bomb! He died to young!

  • i would love to see this entire broadcast (the last we would see of this legend).

  • worst quality video on the whole of youtube. you should win a prize!

  • God I didnt even know that this low of quality existed.

  • @soundforgenine @saulhiphop

Perhaps because you just jumped on the internet in the last couple years and like this new generation, expect everything to be in 1080 HD quality. Even if it's rare footage from the 1960s.....

  • @JohnyBlaze86aimz Apparently YOU just jumped on the internet.. I posted that comment 9 months ago. Also this has NOTHING to do with how old it is and EVERYTHING to do with the bitrate it was encoded at. You should familiarize with these kinds of things before making an ass of yourself.

  • I think Otis Redding did not get the credit he deserves for his music. His hits were re-recorded by several artists who became superstars.

  • I think Otis Redding did not get the credit he deserves for his music. His hits were re-recorded by several artists who became superstars. I believe his use of a keyboard died, until weird al brought the accordian!

  • Otis wrote the song; Aretha just made it famous.

  • @iainmacmhathain I wish to hell people knew how the music business works. It's always, always, always the songwriter who gets the bulk of the pay from a hit song. Aretha Franklin got the glory, but Otis got a 300-acre ranch from the proceeds. Win-win.

  • Otis Redding's music is just wonderful all the time, Good music, good musicians are just timeless, Enjoy Peace Tina

  • my dad rebuilt that Hammond close to this same time. always wondered what happened to it after the crash.

  • Otis loved the fact that Aretha Franklin covered his song...When he said that she "stole" it, he meant that she had done such a great job with it, that her version would now be the definitive vocal version of it...He would make plenty of money from it in royalties, which would have probably been more than artists royalties anyway...He is the songwriter, and songwriters usually are most glad when at many people as possible cover their songs

  • sounds like polka music at the end

  • so hes the originater of respect and satisfaction?! never to forget sitting on the dock and try a little!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this man is under estimated he should be mentioned as much as elvis and michael jackson <3

  • Nulla da togliere ad ARETHA FRANCLIN ma OTIS è STUPENDO !!!!!!!

  • Otis Redding wrote this song. That means he collected royalties every time somebody bought Aretha's record. When he said she stole it from him he was obviously just making a joke...

  • Otis also "stole" from Aretha. The song "TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS" was actually pre-recorded by Aretha Franklin. Otis made his own version of the song and now no one even remembers Aretha sang that song first.

So I would say, it's fair exchange. :)

  • I believe we should appriciate both versions.

  • @turkeyschild I agree with you I couldn't have said it better myself

  • must respect the original!!

  • "she done took my song" Otis

  • The Rationals, a great Detroit band, had a nice version of this long before. Search for Rationals Respect Cameo Records

  • Its not a remake its more like a remix, its the man version, kinda like tlc made scrubs then guys made pigions its the same thing but 40 years ago lol

  • Otis Redding did make this song. In fact on one occasion said before sing it to a live crowd that Aretha sort of stole the song. If you go back and look at most artist during that time, borrewed songs from one another, and at times they became hits. Like the song Who lovin you. It was first performed by Smokie Robinson, then later by the Jackson Five.

  • Hey all, when you get a chance check out my cover of Otis' Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay, just click on thecallofthewildband and let me know what you think :) Man, he inspires me to sing haha

  • wowthat's the lowest quality i've ever seen on youtube!

  • nobody can compare otis and aretha in kingdom of respect the real owner is otis

  • Otis Redding is the song's WRITER. He and his next of kin got seriously paid when Aretha made it a hit. People making accusations weren't even born when this came out - I wish they'd just stop all the foolishness and enjoy the song!

  • Indeed the civil rights struggle was not only won by marching, but music and art. Of course many African-American singers/songwriters broke the chain by singing out and laud in the churches and in the streets. Mr. Otis Redding deserves his place in that movement.

  • According to Otis Redding's daughter (on a PBS special) Otis said that Aretha "took" my song -- RESPECT. She took a song that was done very well by Otis and did it better. A rare feat. I loved both versions.

  • both Otis and aritha are good soul makers no comparable and we love them we love the world of good old days soul music and tribute to SAM cook

  • this was the night before they got killed rip

  • @mightysons74 I believe Otis said "A friend of mine--She took this song away from me-but I'm gonna do it for you anyway" check the Monterey concert.

  • @Makiba02 Well said man...that's the REAL spirit of soul Baby!!!!

  • According to Wiki..he said it *playfully*

Franklin from a domestic star into an international one. Even Otis Redding himself was impressed with the performance of the song, and at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of the cover's release, he was quoted playfully describing "Respect" as the song "that little girl done stole from me

  • I had no idea he did this first..thanks!

    Otis is da bomb!

  • Comment removed

  • Otis did make a remark that aretha stole his song. That is a known fact.

  • did you hear him from the grave? Didn't she sing it after he died. He was only 26 years old when he was killed. Maybe you heard someone else say that she stole the song from Otis.???

  • @Mickey4015 - Otis died in december 67, aretha's cover was released in early or mid 67...so he heard it before he died. lovegoddess49 is right, he did say she stole the song..

  • Thanks, I stand corrected.

  • Aretha recorded this song while Otis was alive. He released it in 1965, and Aretha released it in 1967, two years after. How you feel doesn't change the facts. He DID say she stole his song. I love Aretha as well but that doesn't change what he said.

  • but he said that in a joking tone. in the same speech he calls aretha 'a good friend'

  • Otis said she "stole" his song jokingly. He wasn't angry over it at all. Jealous, yes, but there was no animosity. I'm sure the royalties from Aretha's version alone are enough to keep his offspring sitting pretty for generations. On a sadder note, Otis was found wearing the same clothes he's got on in this video. And let's not forget the Bar-kays. They also had a great future ahead of them as well.

  • @tomthefunky

Otis Redding made this song first, followed by Aretha, just like Chubby Checker is given credit for the Twist a group in Atlanta made it first. Chubby Checker was able to put a dance to the tune and it became popular more popular than the original. I like both version of Respect.

  • @lovegoddess49 the song belongs to the original artist who thought of it and if it was taken without permission then thats steeling wich should be punished by a fat fine and humiliation but never was and i think its sad that the original is not as well known as the aka stolen version

  • @lovegoddess49 Otis was playfully teasing Aretha about her "turntable hits" and she told him " you just wait sucker I'm doing one of yours". Otis pays homage to Aretha with the "r-e-s-p-e-c-t" in this live version, not in his original. Aretha and her sister Carolyn gave an entirely new twist to the song with their arrangement.

  • @lovegoddess49 You're something of a moron. Otis made that comment at Monterey, "... She just stole it away from me..." But he said it with a great deal of himility and deference to the superior version, the definitive version as he openly admitted. It was not provoked by any malice or ill will, that's only coming from your twisted ass.

  • @lovegoddess49 haha, and he secured millions of dollars in royalties from her "stealing" his song. He should have been grateful.

Besides, covering songs was a huge trend in the 50s and 60s.

  • @lovegoddess49

    He said it playfully !

  • in the long shots, it looks like Devo is the backup band

  • Otis was nothing but proud to have his music covered by someone as talented as Aretha. Besides, the writer gets royalties when their work is successfully performed by others.

  • yeah guys. im 15 and have got a present. it was a pick-up, so i wanna know on what LP album i can find this single!

  • Respect is on: OTIS BLUE" album.

  • As Williams16567 mentions below, that original is on the "Otis Blue" album. You can find that (and just about the entire Otis Redding catalog on 180 gram audiophile vinyl LPs on Sundazed).

  • To the people dissin' Aretha:

RESPECT is a two-way street. It was only natural for a woman to cover it.

They're both great versions & that's something we've lost over the years. You don't have many people writing songs that others will cover.

Back in those days, tons of songs by the Beatles, Dylan, the Impressions & countless old standards were being done by just about everybody. Those songs didn't belong to anybody. They belonged to EVERYBODY. It's still "we the people" last I checked.

  • @sex6cult9revolution Yep! And, the real irony is Aretha's version is the one EVERYONE knows. Most folks don't even know Otis Redding even recorded this song, not to mention the one who WROTE it.

  • @sex6cult9revolution Totally agree

  • @sex6cult9revolution we the people is another way state famously by Lincoln "of the people,by the people, and for the people" .... if it doesn't benefit "for the people" then no matter how much people say it ... it's not for the people it's for chaos, and otherwise destruction ...

  • @sex6cult9revolution THIS SONG BELONGS TO OTIS REDDDINGS,SO YOU LISTEN UP!!!!... THERE IS NO COPY AS GREAT AS AN ORIGINAL, HE IS THE BEST SINGER FOR HIS OWN DAM SONG LIKE AN ORIGINAL , NOT ARETHA FRANKLIN THAT COPY AIN'T NEVER THE BEST,GOOD IS HER GRADE BUT NEVER EXCELLENT!

  • YES! Yes I am.

  • Honestly, I'm glad Otis passed before he had to see HIS SONG win Aretha two Grammy's then get introduced into the Grammy Hall of Fame, added by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry, ect. She sang it well, but it completely changed the meaning which he had intended for HIS song.

  • You should get your facts straight. Otis Redding did not die untlil after Aretha recorded this song. In fact Otis died in December 1967, the record was hit #1 for Aretha during the summer of 1967. Otis was on record praising Aretha's version. Only simple minded fans tend to be possesive and jealous of Aretha's success with the record. The song is evidence of both Otis and Aretha's genius.

  • shaddup shun.. u iz a faggat...4reelz.. ino da deelz shun... truzt!!

  • i don't know what the fuck you said and don't give a shit either. Your a retard.... period.

  • gansta 4lif.. shun... truzt!

  • Otis is my favorite singer ever with Buddy Holly a close second. I love this song and despise aretha for stealing it. Screw her. 3194shi is exactly right.

  • screw aretha? you jealous?

  • It's not stealing. It's called another singer's version or rendition. Take a close look at the history of American Music and the songs YOU "think" are the originals.

  • My friend played the record of Otis singing Respect in around 1966. Aretha's version came out in '68 or '69. I think Otis may have even written it. Check songrwriting credit if you have Aretha's record. The guys in yellow in the background out of focus make it look like Otis is being backed by Devo.

  • wut u b talin bout shun.. diz nigga steel from areta franlin..i iz su of dat./. truzt shun...

  • This comment make you look like an idiot considering the fact that Otis wrote and recorded this song in 1965, and Aretha didn't do it until 1967.

  • Oris WAS alive when Aretha's version came out. He said he had nothing but "respect" for her. That's showbiz. It seems that the "fans" are the only ones that don't understand that.

  • I know he was alive when it was released, but he didn't live to see it win all the awards and achievements it and Aretha did. He didn't get all those accolades. His only reached #5 on Billboards Black singles chart and crossed over to peak at #35. While some may argue that hers was better, and I respect that, I am still glad that Otis didn't have to see her version do so much better than his being that this was his song and he was obviously very passionate about it..

  • I truly understand where you are coming from. Aretha has always been my FAVORITE singer FOREVER and LIFE. But personally, I like Otis' version of Respect better (I was going to marry Otis -he didn't know it, or me. lol) I honestly think YOU are taking this worse than Otis would have, AND that is perfectly all right. That's what fans are for. Seriously.

  • securuty yéééééééééé

  • Otis s'est tué malheureusement dans un accident d'avion en 1967 ... ses chansons sont sensationnelles ... Quel dommage !!! ...

  • bad quality!!!!

  • Redding had a one of a kind voice.

  • his dancing:) love it!!

  • I only gave that a five star rating because of the master of soul, the person who truly sets my spirit free, through his music. For quality that video gets a -1000 plus a fuxk you. /out

  • was there no way to post that video in better quality?

  • Great video. also check out the version done by the Vagrants. Lead singer and guitarist.....Leslie West...pre-Mountain

    on Atco Records!!

  • wow!

  • otis redding etait le meilheure

  • Otis wrote this- the Queen made it a little more funky tho. My R&B band bridges both versions- we play Otis style including the bridge- then get funky like Aretha.

  • Can you put a video? I really like to see good R&B bands.

  • I was in RADIO for many years AND I remember reading when ARETHA recorded this after OTIS,,he told Steve Cropper and the GANG "she done stole my song!!! THEMOJOMANdot COM

  • I never knew that Otis Redding sang this song befoe Aretha Franklin. He was a super star indeed. But oh he died so young. Gone too soon

  • crikey superb

    never seen this before

  • Pixel Ottis is the best Ottis you can get

  • they're both great. otis' version is a plea. aretha's is a demand.

  • true ...never thought of that before

  • has anyone heard the minnie riperton/rotary connect version?! it's pretty good...

  • I think the best version is the one sang by The Kids of Widney High on The Ringer haha.

  • hmmmm, gonna have to check that version.

  • Heard this for the 1st time the other day and LOVE it. ALWAYS disliked Aretha's version. She seems so sassy where as Otis's seems so sincere, kind and more lively. There's nothing wrong liking Aretha's- a lot of people do. I just prefer this one much more and am happy I finally got to hear it. Two other cool Otis songs: "I can't turn you loose" and "Shake". So much energy, life, love and soul! :-)

  • From the TV show 'UPBEAT' Otis also did a version of 'Try A little Tenderness' which will never be topped. Ever.

  • ow those opening bars make my heart raise takes me back to youth and youth clubs i was there dancing and prancing sweet bliss

  • With all due respect to Elodea, I have always liked Aretha's version, but it was just missing something, wrong somehow. Then I heard Otis' version and said "Aha!" It sounds "right" coming out of his mouth. And those horns -- Bada-dada-dadadaaaa... bah bah bah Bah! Yeah, baby.

  • Comment removed

  • nice quality

  • Alright: If you want to give Otis' memory a little RESPECT, then play his two least aired songs, "Lover's Prayer", and "Don't You Mess With Cupid". I do swear, R&B artists are never RESPECTED for their body of work, the bulk of which the public is still in raging demand of.

  • With all respect to Otis and Steve Cropper, personally, I prefer the Aretha version. She made a cover, better than the original.

  • OMG!! This is awesome

  • To anybody searching for the definition of soul singer. Start with Sam Cooke, James Brown and this guy. Otis you left us way too soon.

  • Hi does anyone know where i can find an original version of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Redding on Youtube?

  • hey there, ive been searching too, if you find out if its on could you let me know please, cheers linzi:)

  • BY FAR THE SUPERIOR VERSION in my opinion

  • I think you should have capitalized the second part of that sentence, in my opinion...

Also I like Aretha's a lot more personally. She really blares it, although some don't like that style.

  • Very good version the only difference is Areatha took us to church and a little more soul.

  • king of soul

  • hahaha "go die" !

    funny shit !!!

  • wow this is awful!

  • Yeah, I kinda agree. I hope you are referring to the quality though.

  • Sorry about the bad quality, it could not find a better copy so I uploaded the one I have..............its still great to see this vintage video

  • I still appreciate the upload :) I'm no ingrate, mind you. I was too young to ever see Otis, but I would give a lot to do so! Onelove.

  • Ditto, thanks for the post...is it true that he died hours after this? My sons grandfather is John Farris and played the trumpet for him. It would be interesting to find out because he was supposed to be on the plane too.

    Thanks again! Onelove

  • not really otis' best sng, aretha improved this track

  • no she didnt, go die.

  • she did, aretha added the R-E-S-P-E-C-T part, that is the iconic part of this song, the part everyone remebers. and don't tell me to die

  • hahaha thats hilarious. but ur right, she didnt added the R-E-S-P-E-C-T part

  • In response to Dadsgirl240:

Your malicious comment with the little no offense tagged on the end is absolutely ridiculous. You are a low life scum. By the way, proofread your work idiot!!.....You may get ahead in life.

  • Comment removed

  • I'd love to do it but calling you stupid would be an insult to stupid people.

  • inbred? or hick? or both? you decide? which one are you?

  • Faggot? Or mentaly-retarded? you decide? which one are you?

  • then why did u have to say the N word asshole...this is his song and that fat bitch took it. His version is way better and don't ever disrespect someone who has more talent then your illiterate ass will ever have. I swear ppl are so stupid

  • Yo, with all due respect, please do not disrespect Aretha by calling her what you did...Despite the fact that Aretha's cover became more successful, both were sung beautifully by two legends and are classics in their own rights...please!

  • 3194shi COOL RIGHT ON Otis did say "SHE STOLE MY SONG" THEMOJOMANdotCOM

  • its such a shame that he passed away so early it would have been fascinating to see how his music changed with the times.

  • or, how the times changed by his music.

  • he gettin it!!! i kinda wanna sing like him

  • Aretha? Otis eats her for breakfast.

  • they change he melody of the song but hte lyrics they used no offense but its aretha's i've done so many research.. otis original respect does not have the lyric r e s p e c t aretha made that words... otis is a great legend but for real he used arethas version not his!!...

  • haha hes such a passionate singer

  • This video was shot the day before he died. December 9,1967 in Cleveland Ohio.

  • Cool song but no offence kinda bad quality in the video

  • Did you know Otis wrote this song?

  • Yes we know Otis & Zelma Redding own the copyrights.

  • Otis Redding man o man what can i say!

    genius dancing.

  • like this better than Aretha's.

  • Dang. How many songs are actually original?

  • 138

  • pure soul 100 percent

  • i simple adore this man,he is fantastic!!!

I am from portugal, and i would like to know if i go to states where i can find soul music?plaing at live?

  • This was shot in Cleveland Ohio..December 9, 1967, The next day Otis and Several of the Bar-Kays would be dead...

  • How sad. I just saw an exhibit with a lot of Otis' memorbilia at the STAX museum. I didn't realize how young the Bar-Kays were when they lost their lives.

  • Thank you for your kinds words and may God always bless you!

  • i hate to say this as much as i love otis version aretha franklin version was better

  • no chance absolute slander

  • How dare you dethrone the Queen Of Soul, Miss Aretha Franklin! She really worked hard to give us a huge selection of great soul music! Aretha and her producers simply refined this version to make it sound even better! But you have to give cedit to Otis' team, who created this song in the first place!

  • Not only did Aretha and Jerry Wexler made the song better, but Aretha gave the song more depth by making it into a feminist and Civil Rights anthem. This is one of the few cases where the remake was better. Doesn't take away the fact that Otis is a Soul legend and one of the greats.

  • WOW. Thank you so much for putting this on. Tribute to the greatest...

  • you are welcome, thank you for your kind words.....! Otis is the greatest.
