  • Thanks ¡¡Very Good!! Como parte de mis comienzos en las artes orientales están los libros de Bruce Tegner, y es para mí extraordinario verlo en un video y más con su padre y madre. Aunque sea breve, muchas gracias.

  • I think this is Bruce Tegners mother and father. The man with the mustache may be Jon Tegner.

  • I think this is Bruce Tegners mother and father. The man with the mustach may be Jon Tegner.

  • I LOVE these classic movie clips! Thanks for posting. Are there any from the 1960's (when judo and karate were the rage) up here on You Tube? I've heard of one for women's self defence from 1965. I did a search here on You Tube with no luck. If you have any to post, that would be great.

  • I bought and acquired a whole lot of his books when I was young. I'll reserve my opinions on them. All I can say is one has to be selective about some techniques, and I have no doubt he was a good martial artist and teacher, but that arm bar which was prevalent in many of his books ... : /

  • When I started judo in 1964, we learned a lot of the stuff on this old video. It's useful stuff and really works on the street. Sadly, they don't seem to teach it today.

  • Bruce knew Judo but not karate very well. I met Ricky Nelson at his studio who ws the nicest guy I ever met and knew.

  • I have one of Bruce Tegners books! About the french foot fighting - savate!

Got it from my dad, whom got if from bruce him self in san Francisco in the 60`is..

Like his style and how he makes it look so easy!

anyone got mor vids of bruce in here??

  • some of these techniques aren't covered in his books.

  • this video suckz and is highly unrealistic

  • The bigger man was Bruce, The smaller man was Bruce's dad, Jon Tegner, This was probably filmed between 1948 and 1952.

  • Bruce was Ricky Nelson's teacher.

  • @rickyrecon45 Another thing Ricky Nelson shared with Elvis besides rockabilly music...their love of martial arts and holding of black belt rank.

  • This is really something. I found a book called "Karate" 1st edition of his for 2 bucks at a used book shop. While I'm not into Karate (I'm a proud Eskrimador), I love martial arts as a whole and had to pick it up. Very cool book with practical use techniques. Read a little bit about Bruce and it seems he definitely was the real deal and a pioneer in American martial arts.

  • It was great to do some research online and to find footage of Bruce Tegner. I was extremely lucky to have been trained by him in the early to mid-sixties and making the Martial Arts my livelihood for the past 40 years .Bruce was a pioneer in his many styles of defense today. Looking to network with any of his past students and instructors.

  • Say what you will but Bruce Tegner was way ahead of his time and was quite an accomplished martial artist. his system, JUKADO isstill being taught today.

  • I don't think this is Bruce Tegner during the 1930's as someone pointed out, he would have bee an child it is more than likely his father. Besides, if it was Bruce, it looks like he was a little to cozy with his mother. His father was a martial artist so it makes sense that this would be his father.

  • @kentaappel your right its his father he wrote a series of books instant self defence, kung fu katas he always used his friend the medical doctor and himself as models

  • I've seen a lot of karate fights on youtube and almost all look sloppy. that's cause wer'e used to that movie baloney. Bruce Tegner keeps it simple. I like that hair pulling defense. very simple but very effective.

  • Say what you will about Bruce Tegner, he was responsible for several people developing an active interest in the martial arts and making the martial arts part of their lives. Bruce Tegner should also be praised for taking a stance against doing things traditionally for the sake of doing them that way!

  • both of Tegner's parents were Judo instructors, my quess is the man with the mustache was his father, Tegner later studied, and became a Karate black belt, and studied many other arts such as savate, he knew more then many so called experts today that "think" they know something. And those "silly defenses" saved alot of men in WWII, Korea, Veitnam.

  • Nice post !!! The dude with the mustache almost looks like Helio to me.

  • For some reason, he was shunned by the martial arts community - too bad- for them.

  • @gomergilligan I wouldnt go that far but I see ur point and I think it has to do with how sloppy his karate was. Have u ever read his book on KARATE? Well if u ever do u will understand why so many lost respect for him.

  • @jiggahippo you mean he became outdated somewhat but Tegner was responsible for bring the attention of the martial arts to the entire US really in a major way. how people assume lol

  • theres no way it was the 30s,tegner would have been only a child then, more likely the 50s

  • alkune di qst riesco a farle

  • I bought my first Bruce Tegner book back in 1963. The illustrations were good, but it is hard to learn merely by looking at pictures.

  • Thats a great performence of real classical Ju-Jitsu, the way it should be.

  • Really nice to see. I bought several of his books in the '60s, and was intrigued. I eventually went into formal training.

Born in 1929, Mr. Tegner passed away in c.1985. He was even in the old "Ozzie & Harriet" show, doing martial arts. One of his intents was to strip away the mysticism of the martial arts, and to use methods appropriate for law enforcement and the common person. His approach was not as charismatic as Bruce Lee's, but a similar message in this regard.

    Great post.

  • 5 stars!

  • Cool... I bought his book a few years back on Ebay. "Judo/Karate For Law Officers"... nice little manual.

  • Nice crab claw scissors

  • Nice to see the crab claw scissors

  • Interesting to see a video of Tegner. I've been reading some of his books, but never saw him in action. There's a cool picture of him in full flight doing a Basque kick (in Chuch Taylor's no less) in the Savate book, but this is the first I've seen of him doing.. well, whatever this is

  • Bruce Tegner was a smart, well informed teacher of self-defense. He knew a lot about how real fights happened, and tried to teach a distinction between techniques used in the "drunken uncle at the wedding" situation and the "mugged by guy with knife" situation. His books often contain very useful info, although I was too dumb to actually read what he had written until I got old.

  • I had his books, but didn't appreciate them. Seemed too old, plain and boring.

  • Good example of why you don't cross your feet when executing a rear naked choke.

  • thanks i owe a couple of bruce tegners books, he was

kinda like bruce lee he new alot of different styles

  • man, it's come a long way since then. Some of those defenses are plain silly, especially the hair grab defense. Nice vid though.

  • Well a few. But there's very little wrong with the hair grab thing.
