Ya, I agree. A person asks me how to do something on their PC, so I ask what OS their using. Since 85% of people use Windows, and most users of Linux/Mac KNOW what operating system they're running, I usually just say "describe that clickity button with the flag on it on the side of your screen".

What scares me the most is the idea of the linux kernel gaining popularity. Viruses will actually be written more often with the linux kernel in mind. I am happy with my pc not having to run anti-virus software. And as a firm believer in linux based operating systems, this could be their downfall.

Your talking about the people who don't understand computers the rant about OS and people not knowing, Period. You also could ask them how much ram they have and they look at you like what are you talking about? They are basing it online so you actually can store your files online and view them on a MAC or MS or another Google Chrome OS computer... it would be nice to be able to do that and someone has really need to do that for a long time now..
The average person doesn't. I'm a developer and have to support users. More often than not, people have know idea what OS they are running. They don't even know what Windows is. People want to turn it on and do up a spreadsheet or print an invoice, they don't care what "OS" they are running. I guess I am also in a retarded community.
What you don't entirely realize is what google is actually creating. They're not creating their own proprietary OS, rather what they're creating is the first main stream Web OS. It's going to be nothing more then a browser with extended OS functionality. In other words, the applications built for it are going to be existing standard web applications(gmail, facebook, and all other web sites). They wont necessarily invent their own technology. They might extend the web a bit... (read next comment)
...for their OS but that's it. What google is after is getting more web users. The more people using the web the more money google makes. This is why they're open sourcing their OS, they don't care about the revenue off Chrome OS. 2010 will not be as significant as a change as you might think. Chome OS wont be competing with Mac or Windows until the web standards has grown to that extent. Everything Chrome OS will do is what your web browser already does (and maybe a little more)...
By the time the web has evolved to the point where it's as advanced as other non-web OSes, Apple and Microsoft (maybe MS) will have come out with a Web OS as well. BTW google search for "microsoft gazelle", Microsoft has already working on a Web OS too. As for Apple, I'm not sure what they have up their sleeve, but I think it might be a touch screen laptop Web OS device. Remember that it's going to be the web and that isn't going to be here as fast as you think till MS is gone.
I wish you guys were right but windows games cannot be played on linux. Sure, a few can port through wine but there's just no comparison. This is 100% good for my mom who browses the web and sends emails... but a robust OS it will not be.

It depends on what OS you're useing for what purposes. Chrome OS most likely will be for home, Windows will be used mostly for work but can be adapted to home use, and apple, mostly for home, but can be used for work. It just depends.

i doubt windows n mac will have problems at first because of the compatibility of software, windows n mac r the standard for software there either .exe or .dmg n linux runs totally different extensions, so personally i dont think xp n mac have anything to worry about.

The average person doesn't. I'm a developer and have to support users. More often than not, people have know idea what OS they are running. They don't even know what Windows is. People want to turn it on and do up a spreadsheet or print an invoice, they don't care what "OS" they are running. I guess I am also in a retarded community.

What you don't entirely realize is what google is actually creating. They're not creating their own proprietary OS, rather what they're creating is the first main stream Web OS. It's going to be nothing more then a browser with extended OS functionality. In other words, the applications built for it are going to be existing standard web applications(gmail, facebook, and all other web sites). They wont necessarily invent their own technology. They might extend the web a bit... (read next comment)

This is why they're open sourcing their OS, they don't care about the revenue off Chrome OS. 2010 will not be as significant as a change as you might think. Chome OS wont be competing with Mac or Windows until the web standards has grown to that extent. Everything Chrome OS will do is what your web browser already does (and maybe a little more)...

By the time the web has evolved to the point where it's as advanced as other non-web OSes, Apple and Microsoft (maybe MS) will have come out with a Web OS as well. BTW google search for "microsoft gazelle", Microsoft has already working on a Web OS too. As for Apple, I'm not sure what they have up their sleeve, but I think it might be a touch screen laptop Web OS device. Remember that it's going to be the web and that isn't going to be here as fast as you think till MS is gone.

bada bing bada boom... I think a lot of people have Linux machines at home -- flat screen TVs, blu-ray players. Check the manual on your TV, and it will probably have a GNU open source license, and they're using Linux. Bada bing bada boom. Plus, all them servers running JBoss and Apache, serving web apps up with hot java -- they run on Linux, for the most part. But yeah, I agree with you Vinnie, the Google OS will be the end of Windows and OS X. Good riddance. And I just bought a Mac Pro!

It depends on what OS you're useing for what purposes. Chrome OS most likely will be for home, Windows will be used mostly for work but can be adapted to home use, and apple, mostly for home, but can be used for work. It just depends.

i doubt windows n mac will have problems at first because of the compatibility of software, windows n mac r the standard for software there either .exe or .dmg n linux runs totally different extensions, so personally i dont think xp n mac have anything to worry about.
