@SiriusScientist, You can also use your own position relative to Sirius to give him a bit more information. Since he's a herding dog, he likely is "pressure sensitive." As such, gently walks into his space with no extra hand/arm/upper body movement in such a manner that gently encourages him to move his hind end. Click/treat even the tiniest weight shift of either hind leg.

@JckDupp: I add verbal command as soon as a puppy understands what to do so that I'm sure after the command they will do the excercise. I still click and reward all nice tries at that point. I fade the reward according to the dog, some need more reinforcement than others. Sometimes I still click right away and sometimes do a longer heeling line finished with a click, the dog can never tell when the reward is coming so they keep anticipating it. Longer lines deserve better reward-a game of tug:)
@Fire1Frog Never to late to learn or re-teach... Just take it one step at a time, each step being it's own skill to master before moving on to the next.
i just love this video I have watched it so many times! I retrained my older dogs heel with this and I'm definitely trying this method with my new pup!
I'm very new to this, and have an adopted German Shepherd Dog. While he came "pre-trained" it was with a spotty history and some techniques that have left him not really enjoying training. We've worked together the last year and he's gotten much, much better, but this is something he still has trouble with.
Any suggestions on how to train step one? Sirius will step onto something but doesn't turn without removing his feet.
In the beginning, I'd click any movement of hind legs, even if he removes his front feet at the same time. Try clicking a little bit before he moves his front feet and reward more if he manages to move hind legs only. Every little movement counts! He should soon understand that he gets rewarded for hind legs only and that there's no point in moving front legs.
*sigh* I wish I would know how to get my dog moving his hindlegs. He steps with both frontlegs on the object however he never tries something else besides scratching the object with his frontlegs when I get him too frustrated :/
Away from the object, try shaping your dog to do things with his back feet. Backing up will help teach rear-end awareness when shaped, as will teaching a 2o-2o position for agility (even if you don't compete in agility or if you don't use a stopped contact method).
My obedience instructor allows us to "cheat" by taking a small step to the side when the dog's front feet are on the object. The dog tries to reorient to you and move his feet in the process; c/t anything w/ back legs. :) Good luck!
I really do love this idea, going to try it out!

at what point would you replace the treats with a verbal command ?
excellent video, thank you.

That's fantastic.... Wish I'd seen it before I got my working cocker pup - but probably not too late to learn, for both of us...

Nice job on breaking down the behavior into the steps and showing it very clearly in the video.
Wonder if this will work as a re-teach to my dog who competes in Rally. Hmmm . . will give it a try.
THANKS!!!
