At the end I would add a blur effect to soften the edges - where it is noticable you have erased.

this is really good but before i created the fill layer i used color range and selected the skin tone so that was all selected and then did the layer so it would only effect the selected skin not the whole picture. that makes it so you don't have to erase at the end.

its a good tutorial but it would be a lot easier and quick if you select just the skin with the quick mask mode and then do the tan.

Everytime I try to use a brush or the eraser, the hand tool pops up, and I can't figure out how to get it to go away so I can use the brush.

I heard that restarting the program works, but it didn't work for me, so I haven't been able to use any of the brushes yet.

Can anyone help me?

I had that same problem not that long ago when I first got photoshop on my computer. Just press spacebar anytime the hand tool comes up. I think it does that when you arent using a tool for a while or it sits idol. Hope that helps Neverhandsdown :)
