I think the Explorer sounds better in these videos, but I've never been keen on the Studio LP's either. I think the LP Traditional has much better tone, not including the extravagantly priced LP Custom. Having said that though I own both a LP Traditional and Explorer. I think the explorer is a bit better as a rhythm guitar and the LP for leads... in my humble opinion.

i enjoy the look the les paul has but i hate playing them i find them uncomfortable for some reason, both epiphones and gibson les pauls. BUT i am biased because i own a gibson explorer and it is the most beautiful guitar ive ever played. im also a blues/indie/alternative guitarist and i play alot of bluesy improv, and my explorer fits perfectly. also the explorer i always thought appeared to feel better to sam here. but les pauls are nice. im just not a fan

I think that Les Paul Studio isn't the right one to compare with the almighty Explorer. You should've done it using LP Standard at least, even though this is a great video and I think you've done a pretty good job comparing these two. I'm a les paul fan, but in this vid Explorer wins by a lot... And seriously you should stop dancing while playing, definitely not cool!

oh well. maybe i should stick with my Ibanez guitars. they've never failed me so far.

@alexthager wrong.. well correct but still wrong, the first explorer he got was a Gibson, you see in the early days he used a cheap copy of Gibson flying V and I'm guessing when he got money for a real Gibson he went for a new one, explorer.. and after the Gibson he went to the ESP's, and Jackson gave him an king v hoping he would pick the Jackson guitars but he went for the ESP's. You know the JH signature, the iron cross? its and ESP modeled after a old-Gibson

Now, they've gotten great due to aging, getting set up numerous times and so on. And I've even played a PRS that was dull. Gibson burstbucker pickups, and no name hardware. What's the value in that?

To me, bluesy/classic rock style music sounds better with LP and the Explorer sounds better with hard rock/ metal. I guess it's a matter of preference, but I think it's hard to compare the two. They're both Gibsons and I think they sound better than most guitars regardless.

For me, the Explorer has more consistency in terms of sound is spoken, I find it much cleaner sound than Less Poul, in part, and I got used Extrabagantes guitar models, and those that are difficult to play sitting down: P .

Anyway, it is clear that my points are 10 for the explorer.

If that is a stock Studio Les Paul then the pickups are not as musical as the ones in the Standard. I recommend changing the pickups to some 57 Classics or Alnico II pros and your Les Paul Studio will sound richer.

I have a '76 Reissue Gibson Explorer. (And a Les Paul too). I use a Boogie amp.

The Explorer had to go straight to the shop for a 'Fret Dress' and set-up. Now it's perfect. I like the stock pick-ups, they are hot as hell.

It's a fun guitar to play on stage. (We do a set with some ZZ, Kiss and Skynard in it). After you Rock it out, you can settle down and do a lovely jazz tune with the 'Ex'. Really versatile guitar eh!
