  • nice vid jake. my mom scored an old Asus Eee PC 4G (one of the first models of netbooks i think) the other day and asked me to get it usable for my niece. 4 gig ssd, 512 ram, etc. so i tried a few distros and settled on Lubuntu. TinyCore would have been nicer on it, if it wasn't for how choppy flash (youtube) was on it. i am in the process of stripping it of all unnecessary packages like XFBurn (no burner so no need) and other things she won't use, and putting on Skype. i may do a vid later!

  • should i stick to windows xp or use ubuntu as 2nd boot?

  • @SEwalkman752 I think I'd rather use Ubuntu on a netbook myself.

  • @MN12BIRD what i mean is it works smooth well in a desktop pc? or i'll stick to XP?

  • @SEwalkman752 Depends what you want to do. XP is fine really. But if you wanna try Ubuntu just dual boot it makes it easy if you install Ubuntu after Windows.

  • wouldnt you need to install gstreamer on it for mp3 and wmas and mp4

    ?

  • I installed ubuntu netbook edition 10.10 and i can't get it to read my flash drive

  • ubuntu is probably the best Os for a netbook, because its faster.

    what are the specs?

  • thanks!

  • Is It Free?

  • is pink your netbook? Lol

  • I gave this a test drive tonight, and it's great aside from not being able to play my iTunes library... Do you know of a way around it?

It seems to run good even from the USB stick. If I can get my music working, it would probably be worth installing.

  • install wine , that loads windows programmes on linux or just use banshee , its as good as itunes

  • nice vid.. xp on my netbook is getting stale so i'm gonna give this simple install a try.

  • have you tried linux live usb creater? i hear you can use lot of versions of linux with it.

  • nice man.... a great os for a netbook...

  • i put ubuntu 9.1 on a toshiba satellite laptop i had laying around and it ran terribly. Couldnt handle most flash video, or even really really basic flash games

  • your voice is diffrent

  • Where do I get the flash player ?

I just installed this ubuntu on my netbook and so far it seems to run faster then Vista which is what came on my netbook. and yah it worked righ up front I did not have to hunt down drivers either.

  • When I tried to view a you tube video it said in the top of the page I needed the flash player and to click here to get it. I just followed that link. Yeah it would be much faster than Vista I would imagine.

  • you should of installed linux4one looks exactly the same but is made like specifically for the aspire one...check it out some time

  • Perfect, I kind of want one of those things myself now!

  • 9.10 is out? I remember upgrading to 8.10 on my desktop.

  • 10.04 will be out in a couple months.

  • I recently picked up an old Dell Latitude C810 and I am interested in installing a Linux Operating system on it. What would be the most ideal Linux OS? Any advice I would appreciate.

  • @SuperToaster202, Try Netbbok edition in this video or another small Linux

  • @anderalex129 Much appreciated

  • Didn't you say in the last video this computer belonged to a customer? I take it you told them you would install Ubuntu on the machine for them instead of Windows, right?

  • i dont see the point in these net tops running xp or windows because they wont be for gaming

not just ubuntu but there are tons of decent linux distros to try

people are just familiar with xp thats all

  • I put the netbook remix on my acer netbook, acouple of weeks ago, zsnes sounds like shit, maybe it needs a sound patch.

  • your internet connection must be fast!

if that was me it would take about and hour and a half!

  • @Swi2ler haha for me 1min and 8 seconds

  • for a 700mb file?

  • @Swi2ler yes is it much?

    no...

for mn12bird it took 14 minutes

and for the guy below a hour and a half lol

  • i once downloaded a file that was about 210mb and it took 25 - 30 minutes

    so i'm just guessing really!

  • i downloaded it today and it took just over 23 minutes

...so i think i guessed wrong!

  • Nice vid man... so what do you think of the interface??? kindda different but works really well.... They did a great job with this one....

  • Very nice. I love Ubuntu, I have it on an older Athlon 64 system. I'll have to get this newer version. Great video MN12, I've been debating on getting one of these netbooks.

Do you happen to know if these things will play older PC games like Worms Mayhem (came out in 2005)

  • Older games like that it should be fine with. It can handle basic 3D like Quake III era stuff just fine.

  • yeah i have that hd problem too, i had vista on computer, and hd was no problem. now that i got ubuntu on the same pc its a bit choopy chomptimes.

  • If I was to download a 700 MB file with my internet connection here in Australia, the file will take hours to download, so when I got my Ubuntu CD last year I ordered an actual CD and they posted it to me for free.

  • Cool I just bought an acer netbook this past black friday and it came with vista whick can sometimes be slow. I should try this.

  • @bluetech7753 Definetly mate. This OS looks great!

  • yah and it looks like it just works right from the start no drivers to hunt down. MN12bird shows that the wirless work, that is not the case with other versions of ubuntu. I may try this.

  • I have a question, I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop 500GB HDD and I have a heightened interest in the Linux operating system, I currently have win vista(64-bit) which makes my computer crash all the time, I am getting a free upgrade to win 7(64-bit) in the mail sometime soon and I wanted to ask you, If I should run only win 7 or if I should run only Linux, or if I should partition my HDD and run both, I have heard excellent reviews on both OS's and wanted to have your trusted opinion.

  • Tough questing. I run only Windows 7 on my main PC and I won't lie to you... I love it! But Ubuntu is awesome too. I personally would like to have both again eventually. I used to run XP and Ubuntu dual boot.

  • nice camera do you have a tripod for it?

  • sneaky advisement :P

  • do they make this for use on a desktop systems ? and if they do how does it compare to xp ? thanks in advance cool video 5 stars for you hope to hear from you soon !!!!!

  • Oh of course and I've shown Ubuntu a few times on here running on my PC. It's hard to compare to Windows XP. It's much better in some ways but many would argue you need Windows and it's easy to run Windows programs and games in Windows as they are meant. Check my older videos search for Ubuntu and you'll see.

  • thank you very much for your insight and i will do just that check out your older videos on ubuntu thanks again cheers !!!!!

  • looks good.

  • This looks great!

  • That's so cool I got Xubuntu on my iMac and I love it more the OSX! +_+

  • Hahaha man it runs so well on here I want to buy a netbook now! I wish I could keep this one but I'm only fixing it.

  • @MN12BIRD jake my good man you want to keep a pink computer LOL that's awesome lol i have a Dell 5150(Van Halen computer LOL)

  • Awesome. love Linux promotion. We just could benefit from more scenes of Linux gaming and Linux Emulation.

  • Hahaha wait until pt 2 tomorrow then ;)

  • im running Ubuntu 9.04 right now! just seeing the netbook with ubuntu run nicely like that makes me want to go buy one.. =D

  • Oh dude it runs awesome on here! I want one too now (this one isn't mine)

  • 9.10 didnt work good for me so i stayed with 9.04

  • Try Jolicloud, best Netbook OS so far.

  • I told you so!

  • i kust installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my old pentium 3, i am pretty impressed but I will always have to have a windows pc for some things

  • damn this makes me want a damn netbook....

  • You should try getting to run Chromium OS (beta of Google Chrome OS) to run in that Aspire One

  • "Stick the thing in, turn it on" THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!!

    haha couldn't resist.

  • BAM!

  • hahaha u nice pink net boom man

  • wait theres such things as free operating systems?

  • ALL Linux is free... its like Mac and Windows combined, it takes the visuals of a Mac and runs like a PC

  • @epinky2295

dude no way is it better than xp?

  • It runs better, but if you are into gaming then its not for you

  • @epinky2295 not all linux is free. theres a lot of commercial linux distros, many of which are aimed at business. redhat is probably the most famous commercial distro

  • I see, most Linux I have heard of is free

  • @epinky2295 the majority are.

  • Ubuntu 9.10 is really nice.

  • What's a thumb drive? Is it different than a flash drive?

  • Nah Jump Drive, Flash Drive, Thumb Drive. lol all the same thing, different name.

  • @gamesforall129o It's another name for a flash drive.

  • no, its just another term for it..

  • kewl new info amazing vid

  • What is the main difference from the normal Ubuntu 9.10 to the Netbook remix, besides the UI change?

Also, did it enable video aceleration on that Acer out of the box, r did you need to get the VGA drivers?

  • All the drivers where there so nope I didn't have to install video drivers. Not sure what other changes there are. Mainly UI stuff I'm guessing.

  • Wow! I never knew how good Ubuntu was! Thanks for showing us some of the features!

  • That looks pretty cool! Might have to give it a test drive on an old desktop and see how it runs. Had I not put Windows 7 on my netbook already, I might have gone with this.

  • I kind of want to install Ubuntu on my desktop.

But I don't really know too much about it.

As far as gaming support goes, software, etc.

Also, I've heard of a ton of different types, so that's pretty confusing too.

    Anyways, good video.

  • It is so easy to install and it has a program called wine that allows it to run Windows programs (including games).

  • What do you do about hardware drivers? I'm a noob :(

  • datz kewl

  • neato
