I used to use a really lame program which the name escpaes me now... try versiontracker... do a search for AVI/MPEG/MOV and the like editor... usually pops up with some prgrams to use...
Well you can try finding other AMVs that have clips you'd like to use...or if you own anime you could get a ripper and get scenes from the DVDs you own...usually how people do it.
