To wrap up, I see the solution not as a form of socialized news - although socialism certainly is an appropriate solution for some problems - but rather as better public education, thus a better free market.

Rather nailed it when he said "[for profit news] does not have to be this way."

It is so easy to villainize "big business" and huge corporations, but making a profit for investors is not evil, or good, in itself. It is morally neutral. The question is, in this case, does it produce good news? Is there incentive in the free market?
