  • The three notes that made up ABC's jingle were especially symbolic - they actually are the notes A, B and C.

But, of course, there are no notes called T and V...

  • Compare ATV to Southern another network that went down in 1981. ATV embraced the future. Southern thought the south would always be in the 50s

  • Thanks for your ITV In The Face series especially this one from my own region. For me the ATV ident heralds the start of Crossroads while ABC it is The Avengers.

  • I feel slightly less embarrassed watching this at 3 than, say, tv-ark.

...eh, you have my thanks for creating the series.

  • 03:04 - Is my mind in the gutter, or does the logo look like one of those drawings of a uterus from a 50s-era educational film on menstruation? You know, the ones where the artists are trying desperately hard to not make anything look too "graphic"(i.e. realistic)?

  • Why do I consider Central much much better than ATV?

Oh wait...THEY MADE ROSE AND JIM! :D:D:D

  • Yes, for me, born in 1973, that "Zoom 2" ATV ident really was ITV. Nothing can replace it!

  • The ATV ident, its no thames...

I bet ima get bumraped for that :P

  • I don't get it. ATV Midlands broadcast to the Midlands during the week then London at the Weekends. But I thought ABC broadcast to London at Weekends? I'm confused, my head hurts. Please explain someone.

  • ATV had the franchise for Midlands Weekdays and London Weekends from 1956 and 55 respectively till 1968, when London Weekends were taken over by LWT and the Midlands weekend franchise was scrapped and integrated with the weekdays, ie ATV again. ABC never broadcast in London. They held the weekend franchises for the Midlands and the North until 1968, when all weekend franchises were scrapped bar London, effectively putting ABC out of business.

  • I get it now! ATV broadcast to the Midlands during the week and to London at weekends. then ABC took over the weekend contract and in London Redifussion broadcast Monday to Friday with ATV taking over at the weekends. Hallelujah! I've got it at last.

  • I love your videos! They are such a reassuring anditdote to my chaotic love life. Thankyou for uploading.

  • Fair enough. Absolutely love your videos, btw. Keep up the good work!

  • Just so you know, no-one in the East Midlands (excluding Leicester, bizarrely) speaks like a 'depressed Scouser.' More like 'depressed Yorkies'...

  • That's true. My mother's from the West Midlands, so the east isn't my area of experise.

  • And the Muppet Show, Beasts, Sapphire and Steel and Timeslip came from ATV's Elstree, London studios.

  • And ABC actually had 3 idents - the first was a rather art deco style "ABC", still caption, with the three chimes.

    It's somewhere on Transdiffusion.

  • Wrong about the Midlands weekday/weekend split. the friday night changeover between weekday and weekend companies was introduced in 1968 and was only exclusive to Thames-LWT/Carlton-LWT.

ATV Midlands/Rediffusion/Granada would carry on till closedown on Friday night, then ABC/ATV London would start up the following morning.
